d. Write down the first sentence of the book in the
introduction. Where and when was this quotation

e. In one or two sentences, tell what you think this

18. In the FICTION BOOK SECTION, find this book:
RusssianWinter by Daphne Kalotay (call number FIC
KAL).
a. Look at the inside cover. In one or two sentences,
tell what you think the story is about.
b. Look at the title page. Who is the book’s
publisher?
c. Look at the back of the title page. When was the
book published? (In other words, what is the
copyright date? )
d. How many pages does the book have?
e. Look at the back cover. Where does the author live?

21. 19. In the BOOK CLUB SECTION of the library, which sticker
colours are designated novels for grades 9 and 10, and which
colours are suggested for grades 11 and 12? Find any book
suggested for your grade level.
a. Look at the spine label. What is the call number?
b. Look at the title page of the book. Who is the book’s
publisher?
c. Look at the back of the title page. When was the
book published? (In other words, what is the
copyright date? )
d. How many pages does the book have?
e. Look through the collection. Read the synopsis on the
back of as many books as time allows.
Write the names and authors of three books that
caught your attention and you might want to read in
book club this year.

24. Go to the “Welcome to your Library” icon on the library website. Click on
“Catalogue”. Your page should look like this:

25. 20. Click on the Oak Bay Secondary School link. In the search box, type,
“The Grapes of Wrath” then click on “title”. How many copies published in
1999 are available to sign out from the library?

26. 21. Click on “Catalogue” again, and in the search box, type “Hitler” then
“Subject”. Approximately nine books show up in the search. What do all the
call numbers have in common?

27. 22. Click on “Catalogue” again, and in the search box, type “Hitler” then
“Keyword”. What is the difference between searching for the “Subject” and
the “Keyword”?

28. Again, go to the “Welcome to your Library” icon on the library website. Click on
“Catalogue”. Your page should look like this:

29. Click on the “Overdrive E-Books and Audio-Books” . A sign in box will appear
that looks like this. Where it asks for “Library card number”, enter your
student number. Where it asks for “Password”, enter your birthdate in the
form of year, month, date (19961206).

30. Congratulations! You have now entered our Overdrive E-Book & Audio-Book
Library, and you can begin the first step in signing out digital resources. Your
screen will look something like this:

31. 23. Click on “Fiction” and your screen will look something like this. As you scroll
down the page, you will see a heading on the bottom left side labelled, “Project
Gutenberg: E-Books always available”.
Click on to this website and see which E-Books are available. How many books
are available to sign out? Continue spending time in our Digital Library until you
are familiar with it. Please do not try to sign out books at this time.

32. To sign out E-Books or Audio-Books:
1. You can either find what you are looking for on any computer in the library,
but if you want to borrow one, you must use the designated computer near
the sign out desk.
2. Ask a librarian to help either download the Overdrive App onto your own
device, or sign out one of our Kobo readers if one is available.
3. To download the Overdrive App on your own device is simple. Just ask a
librarian for help, or follow the instructions at:

• Click on “Other Libraries”. Click on the icon “Greater
Victoria Public Library”.
• What hours is the Oak Bay Branch open on Sundays?
• Where is the Oak Bay branch located? How do you get
a library card? Remember, with your card, you can also
download many free E-Books from any Victoria library.

steps in signing out this e-book?

35. Go back to “Welcome” and click on “World Web Tutorials”. Click on
“Cybersmart”. Watch this 18 minute video to better understand the impact of
cyber-bullying.

included for certain websites. Your page should look like this:

information is available. When you’ve completed, go back to “Online Resources”,
scroll down and click on at least threeother links to see the contents.
