Conducting Google Analytics Experiments in Wordpress

  1. My name is scott christianson and welcome this quick video tutorial about how to conduct a Google Analytics Experiment in Wordpress.
  2. A WebAnalytics Experiment is a way for us to ask some questions about the performance of our website and get them answered using real world users and data. An experiment can help us determine What is the most effective way to present my web site or pages? What design or presentation will get the most people to: Buy my product? Fill out application form? Call me? Click on an ad? Spend more time on my site?
  3. Right now when a user comes to a page on my site, they are presented with the layout, text, images and other presentation elements that I have decided are the most effective for engaging with my visitor. But what if I am wrong?
  4. What if there are alternative ways to present my site that would be more engaging for my visitors, would get visitors to interact more and in the way I want them to when they come to my site? Wouldn’t it be great if I could experiment with different versions of a page and then see which is the best one? Google Analytics Experiments allows us to do just that.
  5. What we are going to do is setup one page or URL to which we are going to direct our users to visit. However, when the first user visits that URL, they will be directed to one version (or variant) or the page. The next user will be directed to another variant, and the next user perhaps event to a third variants. You can have lots of variations, some of which might be very subtle differences in presentation, but might make a big difference in performance.
  6. What we are going to do is setup one page or URL to which we are going to direct our users to visit.   8. Once these users are divided up into these various experimental groups, we can measure their interaction with our site: Duration spent on the site, amount of transactions, bounce rate. By doing this with a large number of users over a period of time, we can gather some statistically significant data about the performance of each of our page variants. (start clicking) We can really know what is the most effective variant or version and steer every-user toward that page when our experiment is over.
  9. Do do this, you will need a couple of things: What you need to get started: A Self-Hosted Wordpress Site (not wordpress.com) A Google Analytics Account The Google Analytics Tracking Code added to your site (I like the Google Analytics for WordPress Plugin)
  10. For this example, we are going to direct users to a web page called “Pets”, but when they goto that site, they will be directed either a page that contains photos of cute puppies or cute kittens. We’ll then measure the amount of time that the users spend on our site, and see if which variant of the pet’s page we should be using if we want to get people to spend more time on our site. Let’s go ahead and get started.
