Copy and Paste Hardware
1. Copy and Paste Hardware
How the Maker movement is
accelerating innovation.
J Scott Christianson and Chris Sanders
Center for the Digital Globe seminar series
2. Objectives
• Define the Maker Movement
• Review tools available on the open source hardware
and software market.
• Evaluate how open source tools can help with
innovation.
10. America was built by makers — curious,
enthusiastic amateur inventors whose
tinkering habit sparked whole new
industries. MAKE magazine publisher
Dale Dougherty says we're all makers at
heart, and shows cool new tools to tinker
with, like Arduinos, affordable 3D
printers, even DIY satellites.
(At TED@MotorCity)
11. What is being a maker?
Maker refers to someone that makes things
in their [garage, shop, lab, basement,
kitchen, etc.]. Someone that is always trying
to figure out how things work and ways to
modify and improve existing systems.
12. The Maker Process
• Think of it, Build it, Try it. Repeat.
• Supports Agile Design/Development Principles.
Working product over detailed planning.
• Get community feedback, input and help.
• General lack of concern for IP protection—>
Move fast and get stuff done.
15. What is Open Source?
Open Source refers to the model of providing
goods and services which includes the possibility
of the end-user’s participation in the production of
these goods and services.

used predominantly in
servers[4] Linux was created by a
student in 1991 along with other
developers around the world.[18]

forked to LibreOffice after lock-in
claims from companies which
supported OpenOffice.

similar design requirements
54. Cleaning & Maintenance
• Flush fluids
• Drain both upper and lower moulage
• Lift leg to release all fluids from reservoir
• Flush all hoses with air
• Always use distilled water and rinse
occasionally with vinegar water
55. Parts / Costs
• IV tubing and hose
• Rate flow regulator
• Fish aquarium air pump
• LockTite 401 adhesive
• Distilled water
• Kitchen dishwashing soap
• Power remote controller
• Less then $100 but costly R&D

• Design Requirements
• Press a big blue button
• Have a pre-recorded sound
play
• Would be nice to be able to
change the sound that gets
played and make other
customizations.
65. Code Blue

• Design our own system,
involve electrical engineers,
programmers, etc.
• Re-purpose an open source
solution

70. AKA: SP, Standardized Participant or Simulated Patient
Standardized Patient
The standardized patients are
taught to represent and deliver
specifically designed patient
history and physical findings for
learners.
The delivery of physical findings
to has shown to be difficult.
71. SP Findings
• Design Requirements
• Methods the SP could share
the physical findings such as
abnormal eye exam, heart
murmurs or crackling lung
sounds to beginning level
medical and nursing
students.
74. SP Findings
• Design Requirements
• Sense which scenario is
being used and where the
stethoscope is placed on the
patient
• Have a pre-recorded sound
play

95. What is the Center for The Digital Globe?
CDiG Members are a group of scholars whose
focus is on the enrichment and expansion of
international education, research, and exchange
programs, while enhancing interactions and
collaborations around a common globalization
agenda throughout the university’s academic
disciplines and organizational units.
96. There are several benefits of joining CDiG
• Be part of an interdisciplinary group of faculty collaborating on
research, teaching and service at the national and international levels
• Share your research and teaching successes with other CDiG members
at the CDiG web site
• Network with other CDiG members and engage in collaborative projects
• Be eligible to apply for CDiG travel and research grants
• Other grant opportunities for students and faculty
• Help guide new CDiG programs, events and certificate requirements
and expansion of international education, research, and exchange
programs, while enhancing interactions and collaborations around a
common globalization agenda throughout the university’s academic
disciplines and organizational units.
