The passive voice.
Use of the passive voice.
When the doer of the action is unknown:
My vase was broken this afternoon.
(I don't know who broke my vase)
Use of the passive voice.
When the agent is unimportant:
The road was built last year.
Use of the passive voice.
When the agent is obvious from the
context:
Junior was baptised last week.
(We know that the priest baptised him)
Use of the passive voice.
To put importance on the receiver of the
action:
The picture was burned in the fire.
Use of the passive voice.
To make generic statements,
explanations, notices, etc:
Animals are forbidden.
Form of the passive verb.
The passive voice is normally formed in the following
way:
Subject + to be + Past Participle + Objects and Complements + (Agent)*

*The agent is optional. It is only added when the doer of the action is known and we
are interested in saying it.
Present Simple.
Active:
Mike drives a car.
Passive:
A car is driven by Mike.
Past Simple.
Active:
Mike drove a car.
Passive:
A car was driven by Mike.
Present Perfect.
Active:
Mike has driven a car.
Passive:
A car has been driven by Mike.
Past Perfect Simple.
Active:
Mike had driven a car.
Passive:
A car had been driven by Mike.
Future with will.
Active:
Mike will drive a car
Passive:
A car will be driven by Mike.
Going to future.
Active:
Mike going to drive a car.
Passive:
A car going to be driven by Mike.
Modal verb.( must, can, should)
Active:
I must clean my room.
I can drive a car.
You should read this books.
Passive
My room must be cleaned by me.
A car can be driven by me.
This book should be read by you.
Changes in the sentence.
