The mayor of a small Italian village is offering €10,000 to any couple that has a baby in an effort to increase the declining population. The village of Laviano only had eight births last year for a population of 1,850 people, and young people are leaving in search of work. Without more children, the village school is at risk of closing. Italy has one of the lowest birth rates in Europe as the costs of raising children have increased and having a family has become unaffordable for many young Italian couples.
