2. Chapter 1 Sam Meeker is Tim Meeker’s brother. He recently came back from college. When he had conversation with Tim, he said that he will join the Rebels and fight with British. He also said that he will need his father’s gun to go to the war.
3. At night, he heard something in his father’s room. He saw Sam and his father having arguments for the gun. At last, Sam left and Tim saw his father cry in his room.
4. Chapter 2 On Sunday, after Sam left, Tim and his father went to the church. There, he met Tom Warrups. He told Tim that if he can tell him where Sam is, but Tim has to be quiet about it. Tim promised that he will keep his mouth shut. So Tom took Tim to his shack. There, she met Betsy and Sam. Tim tried to stop Sam from taking the gun, but he failed.
5. Chapter 3 Nothing special happened for weeks. Everybody lived without any problem except Sam. Tim met Betsy a lot, but he didn’t get any information from her. One day, when he met her, she gave a sign to Tim that Sam was back.
6. Chapter 4 When Tim was trying to go to Tom’s shack, he saw the Rebels coming to his house to get his father’s gun. He told them that Sam took it, but they didn’t believe it and tried to kill him. Frightened, Tim went to Tom’s shack and found Sam. He told Sam that his father is going to die, but Sam told him that they won’t kill his father. Also, Sam told him that he didn’t have any fight yet. Then, father saw him, and Sam ran away.
7. Chapter 5 Nothing special happened. Father got a small scar by the Rebels, and that was it. One day, Mr. Heron came to Tim’s house to ask a favor to Tim, but Tim’s father disagreed. Tim, however, wanted to try his favor. So after he was permitted to go after shad, he went to see Mr. Heron.
8. Chapter 6 After sneaking out, he went to Mr. Heron. Tim was asked to deliver a message to somebody. While he was going, he met Betsy Read. She told him that Sam is here right now, but she also told Tim to give her the letter or open it. He refused at first, but he was forced to open. The letter said that if this letter goes into the person, then the messenger is reliable.
9. Chapter 7 After that day, he still met Mr. Heron, but Tim and he only greeted each other and that was it. The war went on, and there were only two letters from Sam. Mother and Father had lots of arguments each other about replying the letter. Then like usual, Father planned to go to the Verplancks Point, but with Tim this time, since Sam’s not here. Father usually sold his cattle there.
10. While Tim and Father was going, they met six cow-boys. They first made Tim go to the middle of the field. While he was watching at there, he heard some conversation that he was not able to hear them, and he also saw the cow-boys hitting Father with their gun. Then, Tim heard the other people coming, and the cow-boys ran away. Father had a bad cut on his head and his eye was swollen. The men were looking for those cow-boys, and they let go of us.
11. Chapter 8 They arrived to North Salem, the place where Tim’s cousins named Platts. They had four daughters and two sons. After they spent a night on there, they went to the Verplancks Point with a help of an escort. After he sold is cattle in there, Tim and Father decided to go back by curving south a little to avoid the Rebels. Because of the snow, however, they had go to the Platts again and spend their night in there.
12. Chapter 9 At the morning, Tim and Father left. Because they didn’t have an escort, Father went far ahead instead and looked for a path or a danger. After lunch, they got to the Ridgebury, but they kept walking. Then, Tim was unable to see Father for more than a hour. Then, Tim met two strangers. They looked tough, but Tim fooled them and had some wine and biscuits in there and arrived at home at midnight, sort of drunk.
13. Chapter 10 The house without Father felt empty for Tim. Mother said he’s in a prison ship, but he was not sure. Because Father was not here, Tim began to make decisions. One day, he heard a news from Ned that British troops are coming.When they came, they arrested Mr.Betts, Mr.Rogers, and Jerry. Also, he saw Ned getting killed by British troops.
14. Chapter 11 After the British troops left, the Continental Armies visited here. Sam was in the Continental Army, so he visited Tim’s house. He said that he heard the news about Father. He also said that he was in prison.
15. Chapter 12 Tim figured it out that Father is dead for a month. One of the men who was in the same prison ship told him. But he was not the only one who died. Betsy said that Jerry also died in a different prison ship. After a while, the army left. On, 1778, however, Sam came back. This time, he warned Tim that he should sell his cattle, or people will steal them.
16. Sam also said that if somebody got caught stealing cattle, they are going to be executed. One day, when Sam was in home, he heard a noise and a bawling of cattle. When Sam went out and came back, two people were grabbing his arm and taking him. Sam told Tim to tell Colonel Parsons because he was taken as a cattle thief.
17. Chapter 13 When Tim tried to call Colonel Parsons, a soldier said you can’t call him because he is in bed. On the next morning, Tim went to Colonel Parsons again. This time he told him to ask General Putnam for it. When he went to him, he told all the stories. General Putnam said he’ll consider about it.
18. Chapter 14 After a week, General Putnam refused Tim’s argument. That means that Sam will be executed for sure. At the day of the execution, Mother refused to go there, so Tim decided to go there by himself. The first person who got executed was a person named Edward Jones. After that, Sam was executed.
