11. Some information about our history…
• Trikala was founded around the 3rd millenium BC.
• the city was an important center of antiquity, and
here lived Asclepius, who today is the emblem of
the Municipality of Trikala. He was the king of the
city and a famous ancient doctor whose clinic was
found in our city.

13. Antiquity
• The city of Trikala is built on the ancient city Trikke, which
was founded around the 3rd millennium BC and took its
name by the nymph Trikke, daughter of Penaus, or
according to others, daughter of Asopus river. The ancient
city was located between the local hill and the river
Lithaios.
• The city became an important center in Antiquity and it was
considered to be the birthplace and main residence of the
Healing God Asclepius. The city exhibited one of the most
important , ancient temples of Asclepius, ”Asclepieio”.
15. River Litheos
Trikala is a provincial town with a lot of beautiful
sights and a great natural environment.
Trikala’s most important sight is river Litheos that
crosses the town and divides it in two parts and is,
at least was considered, the fig of our town.
People say that Asklipios, the ancient god of
medicine, was born beside the river Litheos. Its
name comes from the word “Lithi” which means
oblivion. Wonderful old bridges connect the two
sides of our town.
23. Trikala is also a modern town with a wide selection of night
life activities. Asklipiou is the central pedestrian street, with
commercial stores and the most popular coffee shops. This is
where the residents and visitors of Trikala meet. It is the
busiest and most crowded street of our town.

31. Varousi
• The Old City of Trikala consists of the districts
Varousi and Manavika. Varousi was the
Christian district of Trikala during the Turkish
rule and is located at the foot of the fortress. A
large number of old buildings, built between
17th and 19th century, are still preserved or
renovated.
32. The old town Varousi
Varousi stands out for its beautiful old houses that are famous for
their unique architecture. Someone can enjoy their walk in the
beautiful and scenic alleys and admire the special style of
architecture .
36. Manavika
Following the district Varousi up to the central square is the
part of the city called Manavika, a neighborhood of the old
city with a uniform architecture . Here are located some of
the best restaurants and coffee bars in town.
39. The Castle
The castle of Trikala is located in one of the
tallest peaks of the town. It is said that it was
built by emperor Ioustinianos in the sixth
century B.C. In the castle there is the trademark
of our town, the clock tower, from where
someone can admire the panoramic view of
Trikala. There is also a café and a provisional
theatre.
40. The open theatre in the fortress
The fortress today hosts the outdoor theatre of the city,
where each summer a variety of theatrical
performances are held.
45. The Koursoum mosque
Ιt was built by the famous Turkish architect
Sinan in the middle of the sixteenth century and
it is known for its dome which is made of tin.
Nowadays there are held many events such as
art exhibitions.
The Mosque was reconstructed in 1993.
50. The Matsopoulos Mill is located in the Park complex, on the NW
side of town. It was built in 1884 and is today a historic / industrial
monument in the middle of a luscious green park. The Mill, which is
for the most part restored today, operates as a cultural center. Here
is also the permanent Municipal Cinema the Municipal Theater and
a café. There is also a conference hall and a cultural events hall.
51. During the Christmas period, the stone-built Matsopoulos Mill
transforms into the “Mill of Elves”, a famous Christmas park.
52. The Mill of.… Elves!
• Between the 28th of November and the 4th of
January Matsopoulos Mill transforms into the “Mill of
Elves” welcoming people of all ages into a festive ambience.
Various activities connected with the Christmas celebration
take place and amuse people of all ages.

54. MUSEUMS AND THE LIBRARY
• In our city there are many museums, which are connected with our
history and arts. Also, there is a very nice and modern library where
people can study or surf the net.
55. • Α remarkable building is also the
cathedral of our city, “Saint Nikolaos”.
56. Our traditional food!!!
• Our food is very delicious and everybody gets
excited by its taste.
• Our handmade pies are unique!
• You also have to taste our sausages, local
meat and cheese.
• Sweet preserves, “halvas” and “loukoumia”
are some of our traditional sweets.

58. PAY ATTENTION!
• If you see in our city a bus without driver
don’t be frightened! This year, in our city we
have a bus which operates without a driver at
the wheel. Also, the nice point is that this type
of bus exists only in our city, in our country, in
our continent, in the whole world!!!

• The door closes and the
journey begins. But
there is no driver or
passenger. It is not a
mirage, though some
speak of the miracle of
technology. This is the
first bus without a
driver traveling in the
center of Trikala.
