1. Water crisis stares at Rajkot
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Rajkot 17th Sep., 2014.
Till about some years ago, residents of Rajkot had
become used to water coming to their taps once in
two days for 30 minutes. Then came Narmada waters
and for the first time in many years, Rajkotians
experienced regular water supply, making their life
easy.
Last week, however many are fearing the returning of
harsher days with rains disappearing and water levels
dropping in most reservoirs providing water to the city
people.
If this was not enough, a shortfall from Narmada canal
water for last few days has worsen the situation. RMC
has already started the rationing water. “ If we don’t
get a good spell of rain in a week’s time, we will face
severe water shortages for the entire year,” says N.H.
Boghani, adviser to RMC.
2. The water from Narmada canal can not fulfill need for
the entire city. Municipal commissioner says, “We
depend on Narmada water to a great extent, which will
start soon. But if we don’t get good rains by the end of
this month, we will have to speak to the government
to try and get water from other sources, besides
Narmada.”
Against a daily requirement of 1,165 million liters in
the city, Narmada supplies 50 millions liters. With
Nyari-3 has become empty totally and Aji-1 and Nyari-
1 having just two months’ water supply left, Rajkot is
set to face a tough time ahead.
