6. How do I Listen Actively?
Listen closely for important concepts and ideas
Adjust your note taking as needed
Avoid distractions and monitor your attention
Evaluate what the speaker is telling you
Ask any questions as they arise
8. How to Avoid Distractions
Leave your cell phone in your locker or bag.
If you use a lap-top for typing notes, turn your wi-fi off.
Keep a scrap piece of paper to jot down any distracting
thoughts that pop up (e.g. need to pick up groceries
tonight, when is that assignment due?)
9. Abbreviations and Symbols
Symbols can be used to identify material you need to
return to
* for importance
- use these to show how confident you are feeling
with the material
? for any questions or if you need more information.
Frequently used words can be shortened to save you
time.
Info instead of information
Gov’t instead of government
10. Effective Notetaking
What to do – create notes that can be used as study
aids.
How to do it – Which method would you use?
Why? Note-taking becomes studying at the same time.
That is a time saver!
