KAPTUR
managing visual arts research data
What is KAPTUR?
KAPTUR is a collaborative research project between Goldsmiths, Glasgow
School of Art, the University of the Arts London, the University for the
Creative Arts and its Visual Arts Data Service. Funded by JISC, the project
explores the nature of research data in the visual arts with a view to
enhancing existing provisions and developing further support structures.
More fundamentally, the project seeks to facilitate the eligibility and
admissibility of art practice to academic research contexts while at the same
time broadening the concept of academic research.
Given the upcoming REF, there is considerable momentum to valorise
research, research outputs and contributions in more creative ways. By
examining the diverse and oftentimes material nature of the “research data”
that informs, generates and ultimately produces research, KAPTUR
explores one of those ways.
Research data is a valuable resource and, with appropriate curation and
management, it has much to offer learning, teaching, research, and
knowledge transfer and consultancy activities in the visual arts. Currently
very little is known about the curation and management of this data,
KAPTUR seeks to consult with researchers to build up a narrative of visual
arts research data.
KAPTUR will conclude in March 2013 and produce a model of best practice
for recognising and managing visual arts research data and a suitable
research data management and curation infrastructure.
