Welcome to the webinar. We are going to be exploring Website Audience Retargeting on Facebook. Some of you may already be familiar with it to some degree. It has been around for a while now, but it’s just now really starting to catch fire. Why is it so significant? The answer is simple. Website Audience Retargeting is proven to make all of your website advertising much more effective. In some cases increasing existing advertising conversions by as much as 3-5 times.
There are very few instances in marketing where such a dramatic impact can occur from the addition of a single marketing strategy.
Who will benefit? ANYONE that has a website and an offer, essentially anyone that promotes a business online.
Now I realize that many of you on then webinar are from one of our Facebook Groups. Which means that you may be a Social Media Marketing Professionals. What I am going to share with you is something that can easily bring you new clients, get you more business and loyalty from your existing clients, and it is such a powerful marketing method that you could actually build a thriving business doing nothing but this.
So I encourage you to take lots of notes. I will be going through this at a good pace in an effort to pack as much valuable content into this webinar as possible. And while we do attempt to record our webinars, there are plenty of instances where technology fails us. Do not count on a recording. You will want to pay attention to this presentation tonight as if it was the only chance to hear this content.
What are we going to cover tonight? I have sliced up the presentation into 5 distinct sections…
We are going to begin with an overview of retargeting. What is it? And how does it work? This will help to make sure that we are all on the same page as we move forward into heart of what I am going to share with you on this webinar. Next we are going to talk about why you should be retargeting on Facebook. Retargeting is not limited to Facebook. There are Ad Networks such as Adroll and Perfect Audience that will retarget your website visitors all across the internet. And it is worth exploring. In fact, if you have ever visited SocialMediaManagerPro.com chances are you have seen our ads out there on sites like USAToday, CNN, Mashable, Forbes, and a whole host of other major websites. However in the context of this presentation we are talking specifically about Website Audience Retargeting on Facebook. And I am going to share with you why it is the most powerful retargeting that you can do.
Next we are going to take a look at who is doing it now. Who is NOT doing it. And why you need to get started ASAP! Then we are going to step out of presentation mode and cruise a few websites and look at some creative ways that you can retarget your website audience by creating what I call audience buckets. And then I am going to share with you how you can get started retargeting today… for yourself or for your clients.
I’ll take just a moment to get the formalities out of the way before we jump into content. Who am I? Not in the esoteric sense, but rather what is my business background and why you should consider listening to what I have to say. The short of it is that I have been involved in some aspect of Internet Marketing for over 15 years. I made my first dollar online in 1999. I left the corporate world as a VP for a software company and became a full-time Internet Marketing Professional in 2001. I have owned and run numerous successful online businesses over the years. In 2010 I moved to Austin Texas help build a social network for home business owners and have maintained a constant watch on where Social Media was headed. (in particular Facebook)
In 2013 I co-founded Social Media Manager Pro. As one of the instructors and faculty members, my role and focus continues to be on Facebook Marketing.
I will add that In 2008 Something that Facebook did caught my attention and I had a bit of an epiphany. A genuine Aha! moment. in fact there were two key Facebook events that year. What were they? I’ll share them with you in the 2nd part of this webinar where I talk about Why You Should Be Retargeting on Facebook.
Now, let us jump right in to some content with an overview of Retargeting. What is it? How does it work? And again, for clarification we are talking specifically about Website Audience Retargeting.
It begins when someone visits your website. Regardless of how they got there. And as you know there are many ways that they could have arrived.
Some of the most common methods as you see here are EMAIL, PAID SEARCH, NATURAL SEARCH, SOCIAL MEDIA, AFFILIATE MARKETING, PR, AND ALL KINDS OF PAID ADS.
Regardless of how they got there, once they land on your site there is a mechanism in place that begins tracking them. In the case of Facebook Custom Website Audiences, Tracking takes place with a small snippet of code that is added to all the the relevant pages of your website.
Now that tracking is enabled, the actions of the visited are essentially recorded. Im not talking about the scroll of the mouse. There are services that do that. I am talking about their navigation behavior. What links are they clicking? It will also track what they search for on your site. Each of these actions are time and date stamped as well. You will see why this is relevant later.
Now chances are you have a website for the purpose of marketing a product or service. Which means that ideally you want them to buy something. And if they are already a customer you want them to continue using your service or continue buying additional products. However, the reality of online marketing is that more than 90% of the people who visit your website will leave without buying. In fact, if you have a direct response marketing offer on your website, anything greater than 2% conversion from visitor to customer is acceptable. And the numbers are even less for large online merchants.
Here is an example. This is a client that did over $100M online last year. This is a Google Analytics snapshot of shopping behavior while visitors are on their site from april of last year to april of this year. As you can see they had 64Million sessions in that time on their website. 72% of those sessions ended without even clicking on a product. Of those that did view a product 82% dropped off before adding to their cart. Of those that added to their cart another 28% left before reaching the checkout page. And of all the people that made it to the checkout page 84% of those people left the site before completing their purchase.
That means that less than 1% of the 64 Million sessions. And keep in mind that a session is not a unique visitor. It could be the same person coming back multiple times. Of those 64 Million Sessions there were 551K Transactions for .86%.
Now there are many reasons that those millions of website visitors clicked away from my clients website. And not all of them are due to non interest. They could have been late for work. Or the baby was crying, some one knocked at the door. They needed more information to make a buying decision, etc. The reasons are endless. Whatever the reason… they are now gone. and without website audience retargeting they could be gone forever.
However, with retargeting in place they are immediately eligible to be retargeted with ads when they leave your website.
And visit facebook.
If you already have an ad in place where the targeting is set to your website visitors, they are eligible to see that ad in their newsfeed, on the right hand column, on their mobile device, and on the mobile partner networks depending on which you chose when setting up your ad.
If your ad is relevant and enticing to the Facebook user then they will act upon your call to action in the ad….
And they will now be dynamically re-engaged in your selling experience and you can pick up right were you left off in the sales conversation.
The visitor comes back to your website, makes a purchase and everyone lives happily ever after.
Here is a simplified diagram to reiterate to flow… Prospect visits you website, prospect is tracked, prospect leaves your website, prospect is served up ads that drive them back to your website.
In the case of Facebook. Visitor comes to your website, leaves your site, sees ads on Facebook related to their visit.
I’ll give you one more real world example of retargeting before we move on… Car Dealerships are starting to do this…
Ok I think everyone should be clear now on what retargeting is… How does it work? In the case of Facebook its simple a matter of getting your uniquely assigned audience pixel code from the Facebook Ads Manager and installing it on your website. For Wordpress sites this is super easy. Verify that it is working, and then tell Facebook how you want to segment your visitors into what I call buckets. When you create your ads on Facebook you select one of these buckets and they will be the only people Who see your ad.
Now here we are in the next slice of our webinar… WHY FACEBOOK? As I mentioned before, there are other types of retargeting. If retargeting is new to you then there are many reasons to begin with Facebook retargeting. If you already retarget on networks other than Facebook Im going to talk about why you want to start using Facebook.
For those of you that know me you know that Facebook has become my marketing lab. While I have been involved in many projects over the years… All roads have led me to an extensive exploration into Facebook Marketing with emphasis on Psychometrics and it’s impact on all areas of marketing.
Some of you have heard me refer to Facebook as the Greatest Social Experiment in Human History. I believe this strongly and it is still very much evolving.
As marketing professionals you may already be familiar with these recent Facebook stats. The most important thing to understand here is that none of this was by chance. Facebook has been very strategic about collecting data, and subtly influencing behavior. Now I’m not here tonight to discuss the ethics of what this implies, but rather to show you how to leverage their efforts for your own endeavors. The point is not to present a case for using Facebook but rather to expand your thinking for what they are really building and how it impacts your business.
If you take the time to really understand what I am sharing with you, you will see that Facebook truly is the most powerful online resource available to ANYONE.
The reason that both marketing in general and retargeting on Facebook is so significant is because you can market to individuals based on their digital footprint. Your ability to find customers, engage them, and of course Re-Engage them is significantly changing. And Facebook is leading the way when it comes to answering questions like…. Who are they? Where are they? What are they interested in? What are they likely to do next based on recent or past behavior? This is a new era of marketing that allows you to engage your market dynamically based on their digital foot print which is a record their past behavior and a projection of their future behavior. Now you might be thinking… Jesse come on now. How can Facebook predict the future behavior of your customers and prospects? Again the answer is simple.
It’s all about that data! And Facebook has more of it about you and all of its users than anyone else on the planet. To the tune of 300 Petabytes.
For the past 12 years there has been a data battle going on between google and Facebook.
If you recall back in the day. Google made it real clear that its goal was the organize the worlds data. Well when Facebook came along it created a massive blind spot in Googles data collection.
When Facebook users are on Facebook they are interacting and sharing all kinds of data. In fact I downloaded my own Facebook data file just the other day and it was 97MB zipped. This is a Massive Blind Spot for Google.
Im going to give you 4 very good reasons to retarget your website audience on Facebook
The first one is what this who presentation is about today. It is website Audience Retargeting. And by choosing to do it on Facebook you open up a bunch of other features that you may or may not be aware of.
The first is the ability to create lookalike audiences.
There are several ways that you can do this. You can simply import a list of phone numbers or email addresses of your existing customers or prospects. Or as it relates to Website Audiences you can create a lookalike audience from an audience segment. That is once that audience segment has at least 100 people in it. Facebook will go out and scan its user base to find other people that closely resemble your existing audience. This is a great way to find new customers and prospects and get your offer in front of new people. AND Facebook will continue to update the lookalike audiences that you create. So as your audience grows the lookalike audience will have more data to work with to find other Facebook users that match.
Another reason to retarget on Facebook is Audience insights.
As your audience grows over time you will be able to see some very helpful information about them such as….
And…
This is very powerful information that will help you or a client to hone your marketing message. The more you know about who your customer or prospect is, the more laser targeted your marketing message can be.
That brings us to reason #4. Which is hanging on the horizon. And that is Facebook ecommerce.
Up to this point. Facebook has been about connecting, sharing and being entertained. but that is about to change. So you will see many more options to buy products and services without even leaving Facebook. And you and your clients will be able to participate.
A couple of newsworthy items. Well as you know from the F* Announcement that messenger is will allow us to send and receive money from friend. This is the first step to getting FB users comfortable with exchanging money on the network. Facebook also snatched up David Marcus the former President of Ebay subsidiary PAYAL. That was a big move which further suggests that Facebook is gearing up to move money. another recent announcement was the acquisition of TheFind and its Comparison Shopping Technology. There are other clues out there that point to where things are headed but I think you get the point.
So there you have it. 4 very big reasons to be retargeting on Facebook.
As we move on to the next section of this presentation… Let’s take a look at who is doing it now.
Many of you know that there is a plugin for Chrome that allows you to see if a website is using Facebook Pixel Tracking Code. I went out to about 100 big name brands and found that about a dozen had Facebook Custom Website audience tracking in place. Companies like….
As well as….
What does amaze me is the large number of big brands that have not gotten started yet.
OK Now that we looked at some big brands using Facebook Website Audience Retargeting… WHO is NOT doing it?
Only six local businesses out of 150 were using Facebook Website Audience Pixel.
Now we are here at the forth section of our webinar. Let go cruising…..
OK now that we have had a chance to run around the internet and check out a few websites… It all comes down to this last section. How can you get started?
The short answer is jump on Facebook and follow these three steps. For those of you that are really internet and tech savvy with a solid marketing background, well… jump in there and get to retargeting.
However…
As you can see I wanted to make this a no brainer. The time savings alone are well worth a lot more than $98. This is an introductory price. As the course evolves we will likely move to a subscription pricing model but with your purchase today you will always have access without paying anything more.
Now for those of you who are marketing professionals and you want to know how to provide retargeting as a service. Ive got something special for you. I am in the process of creating these additional training modules that show you how to… AND I have included to very cool bonuses. the first one is a wordpress plugin that does something pretty special. It allows you to add Facebook tracking code to any link. If you do any affiliate marketing or have other websites where you cant place code this will do it for you. For example… You could create a link on your website with this plugin that sends people to an offer like this one. And when they click your like it tracks your visitor and adds them to your Facebook audience. You can do this with any tracking code actually.
The steps for using it are simple. install, create campaign, add the target URL and your Tracking Code. Its that simple. More features and function will be coming soon as well.
The 2nd bonus is you get to hang out with this guy for a Q&A call. I’ll give you a bit of time to go through the course before we schedule it so that you can show up with any and all questions.
