1. Who are the people in the photograph?
Picture 1- 4 women
Picture 2- Hitler, a baby, and 2 other smiling people, one of which might be the mother of the baby.
Picture 3- Police, dogs, and bystanders/citizens of the town.
Picture 4- The Statue of Liberty and a man hanging from it.
Picture 5- A family (man, women, and child) looking at the Statue of Liberty
Picture 6- A man checking another mans eyes, more men waiting in line, men in uniform behind a
table with pens and paper, and another man in uniform in the corner
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
Picture 1- Women are cooking a meal. They are all in the kitchen making food.
Picture 2- These people, the two women in the background and the baby, like Hitler. They are all
smiling and Hitler is shaking the babies hand.
Picture 3- The police dogs are attacking other people. The dogs are showing their teeth and some are
biting other people while others stand by and watch.
Picture 4- A man killed himself. He is hanging by his neck from a rope off the Statue of Liberty.
Picture 5- The family might have just arrived in America. They are looking at the Statue of Liberty,
dressed in native clothing, and the picture is black and white leading one to think it is an old picture.
Picture 6- A man is checking immigrant’s eyes for diseases and the uniformed men are writing down
the results. The picture shows a man looking at other mens eyes, we learned in history classes when
immigrant’s fist began coming to American this was done to them.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Picture 1- Women belong in the kitchen
Picture 2- Not everyone hated Hitler
Picture 3- Dogs were used by police to stop riots or something else unlawful.
Picture 4- At this time, African Americans were not free in America, they were brought to their death
because of slavery.
Picture 5- Families come to America for better lives.

2. Picture 6- Immigrants were thoroughly checked before they were allowed to enter America.
Why is this photograph important to history?
Picture 1- It contributed early to the stereotype that women belong in the kitchen.
Picture 2- Everyone now views Hitler as a monster, but at this time some people liked him.
Picture 3- It was the beginning of the “All cops abuse power” stereotype.
Picture 4- African Americans weren’t free in American at this time in history, even though American is
known as the land of the free.
Picture 5- It shows that when families came to America they were hopeful for a new happy life.
Picture 6- It shows what immigrants had to go through in order to enter America.

Picture 3- What’s happening to cause these cops to use the force of dogs?

For all of the pictures I would copy them into an image search engine and see what websites
come back with information about the pictures.
