Welcome to our guide to adult community education classes. We really hope you find a course here that you
would like to do. If you have never done a course at An Cosán, or have never been back to education, you are

Our courses aim to support you to develop your own capacities and experience a sense of empowerment in your life
and community. We hope there is something for everyone, whatever your interests or goals. You can attend classes
here in An Cosán or through our blended on line programmes.

Doing a course in An Cosán can be life
changing, yet we know it is not
always easy to return to education.
We offer a range of supports which
include on-site childcare, counselling,
access to computers, mentoring or
additional supports for learners with
special needs, within the limits of
available resources.
There are always new workshops,
seminars and courses happening at
An Cosán. If you would like us to keep

Throughout the year the An Cosán
Outreach Team support local people
in the community of Tallaght West
who wish to return to education.
We hold regular coffee mornings,
information days and various
introductory sessions to a range of
courses. For further details contact

There is €5 contribution per class to
help towards our overhead costs,
hospitality and student supports.
Student Supports
All students have access to a number
of supports with regard to academic
study, including mentoring,
supervised study, one-to-one
meetings with the programme
coordinator alongside tutorials within
each individual module and support
in terms of preparation for the
assessments.

English Classes
One in four of us have difficulty with reading, writing and
spellings. This class will help you improve these skills
in a confidential small group setting.
09.30 am – 11.15 am English Introductory
11.30 am – 12.30 pm Improve your Spelling
1.45 pm – 3.45pm English Intermediate
ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages
Introductory course: Helps build literacy skills in
English and increase your confidence in speaking the
language.
Advanced course: helps you to improve your verbal and
written skills in English.
Women and Wellness
Develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to take
charge of your own well-being
Community Education Classes
These classes will generally run from Sept – May 2015 unless otherwise stated
ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence)
Course costs €145.00 to include Skills Card and
Materials. Weekly payment plan in place.
7 modules including Computer Essentials, Online
Essentials, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Using
Databases, Presentation & IT Security. Basic ICT skills
required.
Positive Parenting 10 Week Programme
Take your parenting skills to the next level with simple
tips to help manage the big and small problems of family
life. This 10 week course supports you to enhance and
build relationships within families
Spirals4 Week Programme
This programme is for young parents of children aged
from birth to three years. The programme explores
books and toys, and discusses feeding, nutrition, and
child safety. Workshops include interactive play
sessions each week. All materials are provided
Personal Development
A holistic programme which empowers you to
understand and look after your emotional health,
increases self-awareness and build confidence. Identify
and set goals to bring about positive changes in your life.
Introduction to Drama
Take a leap! Discover your creativity and build your
confidence. Explore what drama means through theatre,
games, exercise and improvisation.
U3A (University of the 3rd Age)
Are you over 55 years? Join this fortnightly group to
pursue your interests in a social setting where learning
is life-long!
Introductory Courses in Computers
10 Week Programme
Learn all the skills you need to get the most from
everyday technology. These short courses are for
complete beginners and are a fun and informal
introduction to the Internet, email and more.
Child Care Major Award QQI FETAC Level 5
This, Back to Education Initiative, childcare course
delivers one module over the academic year. Entry
criteria apply.

Community Development Major Award QQI
FETAC Level 5 Fee Paying
This ongoing modular part time course is targeted at
community activists, workers or volunteers who have
an interest in, or experience of, involvement in the
community. This programme provides a progression into
ourBADegreeinLeadershipandCommunityDevelopment.

Y-WIT – Young Women into
Technology Workshops
These workshops are designed to reach out to women
and invite them to hands-on fun workshops whereby
they will learn how to use basic software, how to use
social media and the internet, as well as coding and
eventually designing their own apps!

Reading Workshop
Learn about new picture books to share with your
child and explore active ways to read new words and
develop a love of reading at this monthly workshop.
A new book will be featured each month for children
between 3-8 years.

An Cosán supports local Men’s Shed projects with
access to community education.

Community Care Major Award QQI FETAC Level 5
This part time programme will help you develop personal
qualities and knowledge required for employment in
social services. This could include working with family
and community groups in respite care, residential units
or care of the elderly.

Fee Paying
This part time programme will provide you with the
practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to
work with young children and their families in an early
childhood care and education setting.

Post Programme Support into Employment
This 3 month course is designed for students who have
completed an accredited course and would like to
be supported to access employment opportunities.
Learners will gain skills and confidence through employ-
ability skills training, mentoring, group work, and one to
one support.

Entry to QQI/FETAC programmes is determined by a
short informal interview that will support you to select
the most appropriate course to meet your needs. Some
certificate courses have minimum entry requirements.
A learner who successfully completes one of our QQI
(FETAC) Programmes, may progress to Further and
Higher Education, using the Higher Education Links
Scheme.

Early Childhood Curriculum Minor Award QQI
FETAC Level 6 Fee Paying
This module is designed to provide the learner with the
knowledge and skills required to implement the early
childhoodcurriculumwhichintegratesthetwonationalearly
year’s frameworks – Síolta (Quality) and Aistear (Learning)
– through the pedagogical approach and curriculum of
Highscope.ApplicantsmustaHighscopequalification.

Childcare Major Award QQI FETAC Level 6
Fee Paying
This programme, delivered on a modular basis, is
suitable for individuals who are currently working in
Childcare, as the assessment is based on children and
management in your workplace. Participants must have
completed and received the full FETAC award in
Childcare Level 5.

Higher Education
and Continuous
Professional
Development
An Cosán is committed to supporting continual profes-
sional development in the community and voluntary
sector and offers the following programmes.
An Cosán is currently offering the following third level part time modular programmes validated by IT Carlow under
delegated authority from Quality and Qualifications Ireland QQI (formally HETAC). These programmes are developed
in the context of adult education and lifelong learning and are intended for mature students. Minimum entry
requirements apply, please contact coordinator for more detailed information.
Childcare and Development Special Purpose
Award QQI HETAC Level 6 Fee Paying
The aim of this module is to provide the student with an
understanding of the required physical care of a child, in
partnership with parents which addresses develop-
mental progress and nutrition.
BA Degree Applied Addiction Studies and
Community Development QQI Level 7
Fee paying
This three year part time programme provides an
academic qualification in the area of addiction and
community development work. It will build the capacity
of drugs workers and volunteers to become increasingly
effective leaders and reflective practitioners.
BA Degree in Leadership and Community
Development QQI Level 7 Fee paying
This three part time programme aims to build the
capacity of individuals to effect change in their local
community, the opportunity to build on participants’
existing knowledge base, apply theory to practice and
critically reflect on experience.
BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Education and
Care QQI Level 8 Fee paying
This three year part time programme aims to develop
early childhood professionals to become competent to
deliver and manage quality service to children and
families.
Special Purpose Awards QQI Level 7 Fee paying

The facilities available at An Cosán and other partners
in the virtual delivery of our curriculum include an Open
Learning Centre which has computers and internet
access, classroom/ study rooms and hospitality.
Students will have access to Blackboard, IT Carlow’s
virtual education resource, including both the virtual
and on campus library.

  • 1. Welcome to our guide to adult community education classes. We really hope you find a course here that you would like to do. If you have never done a course at An Cosán, or have never been back to education, you are especiallywelcome.Joinover7,500studentswhomAnCosánhaswelcomedsinceopeningitsdoors in 1999. Our courses aim to support you to develop your own capacities and experience a sense of empowerment in your life and community. We hope there is something for everyone, whatever your interests or goals. You can attend classes here in An Cosán or through our blended on line programmes. Community Education Guide to Classes 2014 – 2015 Doing a course in An Cosán can be life changing, yet we know it is not always easy to return to education. We offer a range of supports which include on-site childcare, counselling, access to computers, mentoring or additional supports for learners with special needs, within the limits of available resources. There are always new workshops, seminars and courses happening at An Cosán. If you would like us to keep you up to date about what’s happening here or receive further information on any of our courses, please leave your contact details with Lily on 01 462 8488 or l.ward@ancosan.com. Throughout the year the An Cosán Outreach Team support local people in the community of Tallaght West who wish to return to education. We hold regular coffee mornings, information days and various introductory sessions to a range of courses. Student Supports All students have access to a number of supports with regard to academic study, including mentoring, supervised study, one-to-one meetings with the programme coordinator alongside tutorials within each individual module and support in terms of preparation for the assessments.   • 2. English Classes One in four of us have difficulty with reading, writing and spellings. This class will help you improve these skills in a confidential small group setting. 09.30 am – 11.15 am English Introductory 11.30 am – 12.30 pm Improve your Spelling 1.45 pm – 3.45pm English Intermediate ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages Introductory course: Helps build literacy skills in English and increase your confidence in speaking the language. Advanced course: helps you to improve your verbal and written skills in English. Women and Wellness Develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to take charge of your own well-being Community Education Classes These classes will generally run from Sept – May 2015 unless otherwise stated ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) Course costs €145.00 to include Skills Card and Materials. Weekly payment plan in place. 7 modules including Computer Essentials, Online Essentials, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Using Databases, Presentation & IT Security. Basic ICT skills required. Positive Parenting 10 Week Programme Take your parenting skills to the next level with simple tips to help manage the big and small problems of family life. This 10 week course supports you to enhance and build relationships within families
  • 3. Spirals4 Week Programme This programme is for young parents of children aged from birth to three years. The programme explores books and toys, and discusses feeding, nutrition, and child safety. Workshops include interactive play sessions each week. All materials are provided Personal Development A holistic programme which empowers you to understand and look after your emotional health, increases self-awareness and build confidence. Identify and set goals to bring about positive changes in your life. Introduction to Drama Take a leap! Discover your creativity and build your confidence. Explore what drama means through theatre, games, exercise and improvisation. U3A (University of the 3rd Age) Are you over 55 years? Join this fortnightly group to pursue your interests in a social setting where learning is life-long! Introductory Courses in Computers 10 Week Programme Learn all the skills you need to get the most from everyday technology. These short courses are for complete beginners and are a fun and informal introduction to the Internet, email and more. Child Care Major Award QQI FETAC Level 5 This, Back to Education Initiative, childcare course delivers one module over the academic year. Entry criteria apply. For further information contact: Deidre Bannon Email: d.bannon@ancosan.com Community Development Major Award QQI FETAC Level 5 Fee Paying This ongoing modular part time course is targeted at community activists, workers or volunteers who have an interest in, or experience of, involvement in the community. This programme provides a progression into ourBADegreeinLeadershipandCommunityDevelopment. For further information contact: Sinead Kelly Email: s.kelly@ancosan.com Y-WIT – Young Women into Technology Workshops These workshops are designed to reach out to women and invite them to hands-on fun workshops whereby they will learn how to use basic software, how to use social media and the internet, as well as coding and eventually designing their own apps! A new book will be featured each month for children between 3-8 years. Men’s Shed An Cosán supports local Men’s Shed projects with access to community education.   • 4. Community Care Major Award QQI FETAC Level 5 This part time programme will help you develop personal qualities and knowledge required for employment in social services. This could include working with family and community groups in respite care, residential units or care of the elderly. For further information contact: Gaye Kelly Email: g.kelly@ancosan.com Childcare Major Award QQI FETAC Level 5 Fee Paying This part time programme will provide you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to work with young children and their families in an early childhood care and education setting. Learners will gain skills and confidence through employ- ability skills training, mentoring, group work, and one to one support. Some certificate courses have minimum entry requirements. A learner who successfully completes one of our QQI (FETAC) Programmes, may progress to Further and Higher Education, using the Higher Education Links Scheme. Early Childhood Curriculum Minor Award QQI FETAC Level 6 Fee Paying This module is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to implement the early childhoodcurriculumwhichintegratesthetwonationalearly year’s frameworks – Síolta (Quality) and Aistear (Learning) – through the pedagogical approach and curriculum of Highscope.ApplicantsmustaHighscopequalification. For further information contact: Gaye Kelly Email: g.kelly@ancosan.com Childcare Major Award QQI FETAC Level 6 Fee Paying This programme, delivered on a modular basis, is suitable for individuals who are currently working in Childcare, as the assessment is based on children and management in your workplace. Participants must have completed and received the full FETAC award in Childcare Level 5. For further information contact: Gaye Kelly Email: g.kelly@ancosan.com Higher Education and Continuous Professional Development An Cosán is committed to supporting continual profes- sional development in the community and voluntary sector and offers the following programmes. An Cosán is currently offering the following third level part time modular programmes validated by IT Carlow under delegated authority from Quality and Qualifications Ireland QQI (formally HETAC). These programmes are developed in the context of adult education and lifelong learning and are intended for mature students. Minimum entry requirements apply, please contact coordinator for more detailed information. Childcare and Development Special Purpose Award QQI HETAC Level 6 Fee Paying The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of the required physical care of a child, in partnership with parents which addresses develop- mental progress and nutrition. BA Degree Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development QQI Level 7 Fee paying This three year part time programme provides an academic qualification in the area of addiction and community development work. It will build the capacity of drugs workers and volunteers to become increasingly effective leaders and reflective practitioners.

BA Degree in Leadership and Community Development QQI Level 7 Fee paying This three part time programme aims to build the capacity of individuals to effect change in their local community, the opportunity to build on participants’ existing knowledge base, apply theory to practice and critically reflect on experience. BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Education and Care QQI Level 8 Fee paying This three year part time programme aims to develop early childhood professionals to become competent to deliver and manage quality service to children and families. Special Purpose Awards QQI Level 7 Fee paying I Transformative Community Education I Leadership and Community Development I Active Citizenship I Technological Enhanced Learning I Supporting Children and Families with Additional Needs The facilities available at An Cosán and other partners in the virtual delivery of our curriculum include an Open Learning Centre which has computers and internet access, classroom/ study rooms and hospitality. Students will have access to Blackboard, IT Carlow’s virtual education resource, including both the virtual and on campus library.
