  3. 3. The Son in Biblical Terminology Hebrew Meaning of Son In ancient Hebrew pictography the script Nun combined with the script Beyt means Ben (Son). Nun represents a seed/fish/life continue and Beyt represent a house/family. Therefore, the combination of the two means: 3 Continue seed/life of a house or family.
  4. 4. The Son in Biblical Terminology Aramaic meaning of Son The Aramaic word for Son is Bar which can either mean “son” or “son of” for example “Simon Bar-Jonah” 4
  5. 5. The Son in Biblical Terminology Greek Meaning of Son The Greek word for son is υιός, which refers to the male offspring a male descendant A dependent on another of a follower 5
  6. 6. The Son in Biblical Terminology Meaning of the Son of Abraham Biological Lineage Physically the son of Abraham refers to a biological direct male descendant of Abraham weather through the lineage of Isaac or Ishmael (Luke 3). 6

The Son in Biblical Terminology Meaning of the Son of Abraham Conversion Lineage A son of Abraham by conversion refers to one who has been adopted into the Abrahamic family through marriage, religious conversion or by adoption. For example Gentiles in the Old Testament like Rahab and Ruth, who were adopted into the family of Israel Deuteronomy 4:5-7. 7

The Son in Biblical Terminology Jesus Christ the Son of Abraham Jesus Christ is called the son of Abraham not only because he is a biological descendant but on a deeper level means that Christ as a man follow in the footsteps of Abraham by being faithful and obedient to God. In addition Jesus Christ fulfills Abraham’s life and purpose as the promise seed in whom the nations of the earth be blessed Gen 22:18 9
  10. 10. The Son in Biblical Terminology Jesus Christ the Son of David Jesus Christ is the son of David not only because He is a biological descendant but also because He is the fulfillment of God’s promise that David would always have a descendant on the throne (2 Samuel 7:10–13). 10

The word which became flesh and dwelt among us John 1:14. Jesus Christ refer to Himself as the son of man to emphasize His humanity Matthew 24:30; 25:31. 11
  12. 12. The Son in Biblical Terminology Jesus Christ the Son of God The term son of God emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus Christ and the fact of His virgin birth. He is the Son of God because He was conceived by the Spirit of God, making God literally His father (Luke 1:35). 12
  13. 13. The Son in Biblical Terminology Jesus Christ the Son of God When Peter confessed that Jesus was “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” he recognized the Messianic role and deity of Jesus (Matthew 16:16). 13

The Son in Biblical Terminology Jesus Christ the Son of God The Jews understood what Jesus meant when He called Himself the Son of God and when He called God His Father, for they tried to kill Him for claiming to be God (John 5:18; 10:33). In short, the title “Son of God” recognizes the humanity while calling attention to the deity of Jesus. It means God has manifested Himself in flesh. 14
  15. 15. The Son in Biblical Terminology Jesus Christ the Son of God Jesus is the Son of God in the sense that no other being is or can be, for Jesus is the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16). He is the only One ever conceived or begotten by the Spirit of God. Thus, His unique Sonship attests to His deity. 15
