  2. 2. 10/27/2020 2 The Purposes for The Son The Coming of The Son of Man John 3:16, explains that God revealed His love towards us by offering up His only begotten Son for a sacrifice to atone for our sins so that we may obtain salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ. This act of salvation requires that the begotten Son fulfils several roles such as: 3  Sacrificial Lamb  Propitiator  Substitute  Redeemer  Reconciler  Mediator  Advocate  High Priest  Second Adam The Purposes for The Son What is Propitiation? 1John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.   3. 3. 10/27/2020 3 The Purposes for The Son What is Propitiation? Propitiate (verb)means to appease or satisfy an offended person. Propitiation (noun)an offense or upsetting matter is dealt with in a way that satisfies the offended person.   4. 4. 10/27/2020 4 The Purposes for The Son Historical Context of Propitiation The New Testament Greek noun translated “propitiation” is hulamos and the verb form is “hilmaskomai”. Another related word to propitiation is the Greek word “Hilastaerion” which is translated “mercy seat”.   6. 6. 10/27/2020 6 The Purposes for The Son Historical Context of Propitiation the old testament Hebrew word for the mercy seat is “capote” which also means a covering. The mercy seat is a slab of pure gold, about 4’ long to 2’ wide. The mercy seat covered the law which condemned us and pointed out our offenses against God. The law exposes the reality of those sins against God.   8. 8. 10/27/2020 8 The Purposes for The Son Justification Through Christ’s Propitiation In order to be saved from God’s wrath we had to be legally declared righteous on the basis of what Christ has done according to Rom 5:8-9. Jesus Christ had to become what God hates the most (sin) so that through His sacrifice we might become righteous before God. 2 Cor 5:21 15 The Purposes for The Son Sanctification Through Christ’s Propitiation To sanctify something is to set it apart for God's special use and purpose. Therefore, we are made sanctified through the propitiation of Jesus Christ. Heb 10:10 Heb 13:12 1Thes 4:3-4 2Th 2:13 16
  9. 9. 10/27/2020 9 The Purposes for The Son Redemption Through Christ’s Propitiation The bible tells us that we are no longer slaves to sin because we were made free by the riches of His grace through the blood of Jesus Christ. The full cost has been paid the debt was settled on Calvary. We are now completely redeemed by the blood of the lamb Rom 8:6, Eph 1:7. 17 The Purposes for The Son Reconciliation Through Christ Propitiation The bible tell us that through Jesus Christ’s propitiation we are no longer enemies of God Roman 5:10-11. The relationship between man and God has been restored by the propitiation of Jesus Christ.  2 Cor 5:17-19  Col 1:20 18
