Question 4 & 5
1. Who would be the audience for your media project?
Our Target Audience
Our target groups are E2, D2 and C2. In this response, I will explain why we chose this group
as our primary audience.
E2 are the unemployed and the story of our project is about an 18-year-old man who is
unemployed and has gone down a dark road which could be relatable to those in group E2.
This means our target audience could identify with the fact that our main character also does
not have a job and maybe understand the story and get attached and drawn to the character
because of the similarities they both share.
D2 is the category also known as the unskilled manual workers who do jobs such as
plumbing. This is relatable too because they do not get such a good wage and can relate to the
film purely because one of the main characters is in a similar situation. In a similar way, the
second of our main characters has a lower wage and so will be able to identify the story
shown and maybe compare and contrast with his story.
C2 is the working class so the people who do not earn a large wage and live in more poor
areas and this purely links to the characters in the film as they too live in a rough, poorer area
and so the working class will understand how the characters are developed and therefore
would be attracted to the film so they can also compare and contrast their story with the story
of the character.
We carried out a range of different audience research methods to establish what our audience
enjoys about watching action movies. We did this to ensure that these groups enjoy watching
action films and will be attracted to our production too. The people who took part in this
research agreed that the protagonist should be male as it would be more effective than a
female especially in this genre of film. They also suggested that location is important and
should be set in realistic settings to ensure the movie narrative is believable.
How did you attract/address your audience?
We attracted the audience through this use of several different camera shots, choice and use
of audio, skill of editing, good continuity throughout, and props and costume. All these
played a key part in successfully attracting the audience and wonder how the story would pan
out. I will outline the key factors that I feel attracted the audience to our movie.
Framing
One way that interested and caught the audience’s eye were the camera shots we used. The
camera shots were well framed throughout which means the audience gets a good visual of
the setting and the characters in the opening sequence. Examples would be the POV when the
gun points to the camera as there was no irrelevant objects in the frame therefore the framing
was very precise in this particular shot. This makes the opening sequence engaging and
visually interesting.
2. Another shot that was well framed was the shot that is framed with the bin which is visually
attractive. This specific shot makes a visually interesting scene but also shows the use of
originality. The shot will first confuse the audience but then it makes sense because it works
well with the continuity of the film.
A third example of a well framed shot was the shot of the Tandas store because there is a
lamppost to the left of the frame and so its framed well so you can still see Tandas clearly but
adds a bit of attraction to it rather than just have an unframed shot. The audience would
immediately spot what has been done with the angle of the shot and it will attract them
because it has originality. The shot was visually attractive as is expected in movies of this
genre.
Editing
Another way that we attracted our audience was the way the editing was done and how the
audio used was correspondent to the setting of the film. The editing was timed well because
the shots actually change on the beat of the music. This emphasizes the pace of the scene
which in an action film is important. The continuity of the editing was good so we didn’t miss
out parts of the narrative where the character walks to the shop so it shows the scene exactly
how it happened which keeps the audience understanding.
Music
The music that was used in the production was in the category of grime. Grime is a genre of
music that emerged in England in the late 90s to early 2000s. The grime genre is made up of
garage, drum and bass and dancehall styles. Grime was also developed in the UK and our
movie is also based in the UK. Therefore, the music would attract our audience because they
would be interested to hear the music in a movie setting. This would relate to the audience
that has been targeted and that is why the film is UK based because people out of the UK
may not understand or relate to the story, so it relates to the audience because they can see
how the youth are actually portrayed in the modern day and then it will interest them so they
would want to continue to watch.
Characters
The characters have a distinctive look that would intrigue the audience into wanting to know
the character more, the characters have a kind of "chav" look which in other words means
someone who looks like they are violent and that is what we planned to do because the film is
about violence and crime in England. Therefore, the appearance of the characters is important
so that the audience can understand what kind of a character they are and by what costumes
used. We did what we set out to do, this would attract the audience because everyday they
probably see a resemblance when they are on the streets and maybe they would want to know
whether the youth are portrayed in that way in the UK.
Narrative
The narrative of our movie is also engaging for our audience and was intended to attract
them. The key themes in the movie include violence, crime, relationships. The movie would
develop these ideas throughout and are effectively introduced in the opening sequence.
