2. KIOF ACTIVITIES.
Dissemination of the organic message
through:
• Students.
• Farmers training.
• Consultancy and outreach
• Demonstration gardens
3. What is organic farming?
• A production system, which avoids or largely
excludes the use of synthetically compounded
fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators and
livestock feed additives. To the maximum extent
feasible, organic farming system rely on crop
rotations, crop residues, animal manures,
legumes, green manures, off- farm organic waste,
and aspects of biological pest control to maintain
soil productivity and tilth, to supply plant
nutrients and to control insects, weeds and other
pests.
4. Advantages of organic
farming.
• Sustainability: The soils capability to nature and
sustain plant life is enhanced.
• Efficient use of soil nutrients.
• Self-reliance in production inputs.
• Use of pest management methods that do not
seriously affect the environment or mankind.
• Elimination of pesticides related health
problems.
• Improved family nutrition.
5. Cont.
• Space intensive-ability to produce more
food from a small area.
• Labour intensive rather than capital
intensive.
• Water conservation.
• Conservation of plant genetic resource.
• Income generation.
• Risk free.
• Economically sound.
6. Organic farming and health
• Clean water-
• Respiratory complications-spraying
• Produce free of chemical residue
• Nutrition-produce with the right nutritional
composition-Facts and figures-increasing
fertilizer use with decreasing yields and also
decreasing mineral composition.
7.
8. Principles of organic farming.
• Diversity-both in animals and
plants.
• Living soil.
• Cyclic flow
• Keeping animals according to their
needs
