The Active Denial System (ADS) is
a non-lethal, directed-energy weapon.
It is developed by U.S. Military.
The weapon can disperse a crowd
without injuring people.
The ADS was deployed in 2010 with the
United States military in the Afghanistan
War.
Raytheon is currently marketing a
reduced-range version of this
technology.
4. NON-LETHAL WEAPON
Non-lethal weapons (NLW) are intended to incapacitate
people and equipment while limiting unnecessary loss of life
and damage to property and the environment.
Active denial system is a non-lethal weapon that causes a
high burning sensation to the skin.
The goal behind the pain ray is to control groups and crowds
in a more humanitarian way.

5. ACTIVE DENIAL SYSTEM
The Active Denial System is a non-lethal weapon.
It is designed for area denial, perimeter security and crowd
control.
It works by heating the surface of targets, such as the skin of
targeted human subjects.
Informally, the weapon is also called the heat ray.

ADS was developed under the sponsorship of the DOD Non-Lethal Weapons
Program with the Air Force Research Laboratory as the lead agency.
On August 20, 2010, the Los Angeles Sheriff‘s Department announced its intent
to use this technology on prisoners in the Pitches Detention Center in Los
Angeles.
The ADS is currently only a vehicle-mounted weapon.

The ADS works by firing a high-powered beam of 95 GHz waves at a target
which corresponds to a wavelength of 3.2 mm.
The ADS millimeter wave energy works on a similar principle as a microwave
oven.
ADS only penetrate the top layers of skin.
The ADSʼs repel effect in humans occurs at slightly higher than 44 °C
(111 °F).

A spokesman for the Air Force Research Laboratory described his experience
as a test subject for the system:
"For the first millisecond, it just felt like the skin was warming up. Then it got
warmer and warmer and you felt like it was on fire.... As soon as you're away
from that beam your skin returns to normal and there is no pain."

9. NEEDS OF ADS
Two person were killed and nine were injured in
police firing during protest in Rohtak, Bihar on July
08, 2014.
For our military, to save more of our troops, and to
make them safer.
For our own country, to try to help stop riots and
large groups misbehaving.

10. BENEFITS
Active Denial System is completely non-lethal.
Does not cause long term health problems.
Can be used from long range.
Very mobile.
Handheld version or can be mounted on a hummer.
Very adaptable, can be used anywhere in any
conditions, at any time.
10
11. DISADVANTAGES
Could be used in inappropriate ways and used as a
torture weapon.
When used, could cause people to run away from
the ray and trample or stampede others.
If shot into a large group people may not be able to
leave, even though they are trying.
