KEY TERMS
Dualism – the division of the world between physical and spiritual

Unitative – the uniting aspect of sex
Sacrament – traditionally, am outward sign of grace ordained by God
Conjugal – married love making
Covenantal – a group bound by a covenant with God
Patriarchal Views – views that are related to or characteristic of a system of society controlled by men
Ascetic Tradition – describes lifestyle characterised by abstinence from various sorts of worldly pleasures
Annulment – when the Church declares a marriage null and void from the beginning (decided through church court)
Diriment impediment – 12 ground s which allow annulment to occur
• Man 16+ woman 12+ , impotence, married before, not baptised, vow of chastity, forced to marry, killed spouse to remarry, consanguity (related), affinity (related via law), living together after invalid marriage ceremony, adopted siblings, in holy orders
Concupiscence – strong sexual desire, lust
Agape – unconditional love, expecting nothing in return
Eros – erotic sexual love
Philia– community, brotherly/sisterly friendship bonds
Storge – affection, parents to offspring
St Augustine – may have such a dark view on sex due to his guilt from past experiences (leaving his mistress and son)

Catholic – religious orders and priesthood are celibate
Orthodox and Protestant – see priesthood as compatible
with marriage
Unity and procreation are the key purposes of marriage
– for Catholics these must always occur in sex, other
churches don’t enforce this
Love, sex and marriage are all considered bound
together in Christian thinking

29. Homosexuality and the Church
At present the government is reviewing legislation so that
same sex marriage may occur – it is not currently legal
Still a criminal offence in other parts of the world
The are fears of a slippery slope occurring – if they ignore
the Bible regarding this what next?
Quakers will perform a spiritual marriage – but are unable
to legally marry people
Roman Catholics and most Anglicans are against the change
due to biblical teachings
Non-conformists believe there is place for this change
Civil partnerships are already allowed – providing the same
legal benefits as marriage – but so religious aspect allowed
in ceremony
