6. Why are these skills important?
- 94% of hiring managers say people with strong soft skills
are more likely to be promoted to leadership positions
- Automation means humans add value via “people” and
“creative” skills
- Interviewers ask about them!
- A study conducted by Harvard University suggested that
as much as 80% of achievements in an individual’s career
are determined by soft skills and only 20% by hard skills

I had 2 weeks of work experience in a care home for people
with learning difficulties. This helped me to develop empathy
skills with the residents as they struggled to communicate
their needs and often was aggressive when frustrated.
I sang a solo in the school choir in front of an audience of
700 people. I felt pressure to perform well, but was able to
do so as I practiced hard and knew all of my lines.
During D of E, we lost our way, ran out of phone battery and
had no means of communication. We managed to stay calm
and identify a route back to a nearby village to call for help.
I led a project in english at school. This required me to be in
charge of 10 people. I used email, meetings, phone calls
and WhatsApp to ensure everyone was on the same page
and knew what they were doing
I ran a marathon. As part of my training, I documented
everything including run times, meals, heart rate and sleep.
I used the data to identify the combinations of all variables
and formulate a plan for running my best time
