2. This lecture is dedicated to
Doctors, Nursing staff, the
hygiene workers, police who
made supreme sacrifice to keep
me alive. As a gratitude I will not
be charging any fee for the
programme. I will answer all
questions regarding Qualitative
Research and Nvivo without any
fee, if my lecture is found to be
useful to my brothers and
sisters. Gratitude is a small word
for them.

3. You may visit this website for whatever help you need for
using Nvivo. Large number of medical professionals shared
their experience to create the software.
https://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/welcome/welcome.htm.
It mentions Nvivo 11. The manual for Nvivo (The latest revised
version) is yet to be prepared. However, you can use it as it
was prepared with 25 years of experience by social scientists
and doctors. Please note there is no word know as NODE, It is
all CODE. It used to have node which is not being used any
more by researchers.

4. “A good society contains many
different artists doing many
different things. A bad society
coerces artists because it knows
that they can reveal all kinds of
truths.”
“Tyrants always fear art
because tyrants want to mystify
while art tends to clarify. The
good artist is a vehicle of truth.”
Doctors and support staff of
doctors are vehicle of truth.
Thanks to Dr.Mishra sir,
Dr.Rachana mam for helping me
to create this video.

5. Opening
Remarks
This lecture discussion is for researchers in medicine with focus
on mental health practitioners and researchers.
A basic knowledge of qualitative research is assumed. However, is
not a prerequisite for the lecture. All references are given at the
end of the lecture presentation.
This lecture helps you to use Nvivo software to do your research.
Scholars who understand functionality of software will be able to
come out with better insights.
Important qualifier is, no qualitative software will give you
answers and prepare a report. It only helps you to do faster,
better, validated and reliable, replicable analysis- but not
answer or substitute for your knowledge of qualitative research.

7. What can it do?
Is it possible to put all your
data and get automatic
insights? Yes. But not
perfectly.

8. What can you do with Nvivo?
IMPORT ORGANIZE EXPLORE CENTRALIZE

9. Data/files
Detailed View of all files which you can see.
1.It is not possible to edit here in the Nvivo software . Means you cannot import and then edit the data
here.
2. Interviews need be in a from that is amenable to analysis. (how to clean your data in word will be
discussed)
3.You can import data from word, pdf, excel, SPSS, videos, audios, news papers reports, Mendeley, Endnote,
pictures (anatomy museum), Video clippings, twitter data, youtube data, facebook data, social media data.
4.Standard English will be transcribed automatically and given with the videos.
5.Theoritically it can analyze large data. However, if you keep large static and dynamic data sets you will be
having more clutter.

14. Coding
• A code is often a word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative,
salient, essence-capturing, or attribute for a portion of data.
(0r)
A label identifying what is the interest in data for the researcher
How you do coding?
Deductive coding and inductive coding.
Two types of coding: Grounded Theory or emergent coding or data speaks to you
or framework analysis or structured coding where you will speak to data.
The best approach is to do both. Have a framework and then try to speak with the
data.

15. Six ways to
code
• similarity (things happen the same way)
• difference (they happen in predictably different
ways)
• frequency (they happen often or seldom)
• sequence (they happen in a certain order)
• correspondence (they happen in relation to other
activities or events)
• causation (one appears to cause another)
AIIMS 15

16. Theme
•A common recurring pattern
across data set clustered around
a central organizing concept.
AIIMS 16

18. Category
• They are like strata. Within the group they are similar but between
the groups they dissimilar.
• Is like age groups, based on location ( patients from Delhi, Chennai
etc), Categories are created to have comparisons.
• But it is not necessary to have categories.

19. Case
• Cases in Nvivo has defined meaning . it is a
“Unit of Analysis”.
• Case have attribute.
• For example, an article may be case with
attributes like author, date of publication,
journal of publication etc.
• A person may give an interview. But you can
make him a case with appropriate attributes.
AIIMS 19

20. Sentiment • The sentiment analysis gives output on how
positive and negative the attitudes. It is
done automatically, and you need not
programme any thing.

21. Understand relationships
Relationships record statements or hunches you have developed about how
items in your project are connected. You might create relationships to show
how your research participants are related. You can show relationship with
comorbidities.
Associative (Anna 'knows' Ken)
One way (Anna 'employs' Ken)
Symmetrical (Anna 'works with' Ken) (both way)
Relationships are stored in the Relationships folder under the Nodes group in
Navigation View. Relationship types are stored in the Relationship types
folder under the Classifications group in Navigation View.
AIIMS 21

22. It is an
aggregation
of different
world views
This is not, however, a hard and fast rule. If a single
comment made by one participant is particularly helpful in
elucidating their account, you may want to devise a theme
that encapsulates it and include it in your template.
It is important to recognize that themes in qualitative
research are not hiding in the data, waiting to be
‘discovered’ by the researcher. Rather, they arise from the
engagement of a particular researcher with the text, as he
or she attempts to address a particular research question.
As such, they are pragmatic tools to help the researcher
produce their account of the data.
AIIMS 22
7/17/2021
23. When deciding whether and how to
define themes, keep this pragmatic
intent in mind, ask yourself the
question, ‘if I code the text in this way,
is it likely to help me build my
understanding of the data?’

27. We will be taking a tour to Nvivo. If you have the
software installed in the computer, go to it. You
can post all your questions in the zoom chat
session. I may not be able to answer them. But will
answer all questions in a week and send you the
reply.
