Earlier, it was operating as the personal Railway coaches of the erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Rajasthan, Gujarat as well as of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. After Indian Independence in 1947, these coaches ceased to be used, as it was not viable to include these in the normal passenger trains due to their gorgeous furnishings on the interiors of their walls. The Palace On Wheels made its inaugural trip as a steam engine train on 26th January 1982. It started chugging the distances regularly from October 1982. Palace on Wheels promotes a charity foundation that is run exclusively to promote the education of children in the villages of Bengal and Orissa, India. Palace on Wheels has earned an international reputation for its truly world-class travel experiences. 10. capacity of the train The train comprises of total 14 coaches which are named after different cities of Rajasthan. There are 52 rooms on the train and they are allocated to Single, Double and Triple occupancies. Approximate, there are 104 passengers on any fully-booked tour. It has 2 restaurants cum kitchen cars, one Bar cum Lounge and 4 service Cars. There is also a comfortable lounge, a library and a bar.
