Companies that we talk to usually tell us about one of two experiences that they are having…
Does this look familiar? You have all this data, but only the data team – sometimes only one person – can actually access it and run the reports or do the analysis that everyone in the company needs. So all of the questions that everyone in your company has – have to wait in line.
Some systems allow people to grab a bunch of data and go analyze it on their own – which seems great, but turns out causes a lot of chaos. These tools can only analyze a subset of the data, which means you aren’t getting a complete picture of the business, and even worse – everyone is defining the data differently and creating business metrics in their own way. Have you ever walked into a meeting and two people spend time arguing over whose data is right – instead of what to do with the conclusions?
Legacy tools like Microstrategy are focused on creating standards across the organization – which is not a bad thing, but without the flexibility of self-service access – cause the data bottleneck… Newer visualization tools like Tableau are great at self-service, but they cause chaos with everyone off on their own with different sets of data and different business metrics.
So how to do you find balance between both these goals?
That’s where Looker comes in.
We have architected Looker as a data platform that balances both of these needs.
Looker sits on top of any SQL database – so you don’t have to move your data and you certainly don’t have to analyze just a sub-set. The our data-modeling layer allows your data team to create consistent definitions for the data and create business metrics that the everyone can use – things like ‘active customer’ or ‘lifetime value of a customers’ can be defined once and then everyone can use that definition in their own analysis. Anyone in the business can then explore and analyze all the data on the Looker data platform. Ask and answer their own questions, create dashboards and share with just a link. What we’ve found amazing is that over time our companies begin to build a data culture. Where everyone is making decisions based on data – and operationalizing it into their systems.
So how did we do it? Through these three technical pillars of our platform.
We’re 100% in-database. If you’ve already put energy into centralizing your data, then you can easily leverage that investment by using the Looker platform to turn your data warehouse into a data analytics platform. If you haven’t, that’s OK too. Our Modeling Layer LookML makes it possible to take data in whatever condition it’s in and clean it up by building re-usable definitions and logic.
You can access Looker from anywhere because we work through the browser – which also makes it easy to share your analysis with just a link.
If you’re interested in extending and sharing everything from a simple dashboard to deep exploration with partners or customers – or even embedded within your own product – we are uniquely architected to do that easily.
Because we are such a flexible data platform, our customers are using us in many different ways.
