Out In Front! Remarkable
Considering Nephrology’s size vs.
all of Medicine
There are more than 800,000 physicians in the US
and only about 5,000 are practicing renal medicine,
so nephrologists represents only about 0.6% of total
US physicians.
On the other hand, the cost of end stage kidney
disease care is very high: 18 billion US dollars per
annum in public and private money (source
USRDS). This is nearly 2% of the 1 trillion dollar
total annual health care budget of the US and rising
rapidly.

14. Evidence-Based Medicine
Sir Austin Bradford Hill, British Researcher:
"All scientific work is incomplete- whether
it be observational or experimental. All
scientific work is liable to be upset or
modified by advancing knowledge. This
does not confer upon a freedom to ignore
the knowledge we already have, or to
postpone the action that it appears to
demand at a given time. Who knows, asked
Robert Browning, but that the world may
end tonight? True, but on available
evidence most of us make ready to
commute on the 8:30 next day."

In the past decade there has been a dramatic increase in the utilization of the Internet all over the world.
There needs to be more efforts to utilize Internet for the purpose of prevention
“The industrial development has been developed by the hydro-mechanical power, steam engine power, and the electrical power. - Today our industry relies on the Internet and the Internet infrastructure. This has as much impact as the previous industrial infrastructures”- Vint Cerf, quote from Supercourse lecture http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/lecture/lec1351/002.htm
During the past 5 years the Lingua Franca of health research and science has become PowerPoint. Most of our current scientific knowledge has been assembled in PowerPoint lectures. Moreover the growth of PowerPoint on the net has been astonishing. In 1994 there were few lectures, now there are over 5 million. If we could establish a global system to make the academic lectures freely accessible in a virtual Library of lectures we could markedly improve the sharing of our prevention knowledge.
Supercourse is the global library of lectures shared for free by 10000 faculty members from 152 countries of the world. It was originally funded by NASA and currently funded by the National Library of Medicine, NIH, USA
www.pitt.edu/~super1
www.pitt.edu/~super1
We must differentiate telepreventive medicine from telemedicine. Telemedicine is designed to “cure” and it is expensive, it is unlikely that telemedicine can have any effect on global health. In contrast with telepreventive medicine we can reach millions with the prevention message. We have the potential to continue to improve global health. Supercourse is one of the examples of how important telepreventive medicine is at reaching big numbers of people with low costs.
Golden lecture is a perfect tool for distribution of important information through the systems of telepreventive medicine. It utilizes inexpensive low bandwidth systems to reach millions of people.
We have been successful in obtaining outstanding lectures. Overall there are over 1200 lectures available.
Supercourse currently has almost 10000 faculty members from 150 countries of the world
