4. The 5.4 acres eco-friendly complex consists of 56 Four bed room flats & 56 three bed
room flats in a G+7 configuration along with complete sports and children park facilities.
The highlight of the complex is that, it is first ever residential complex based on DRDO
developed Bio-digester technology for sewage treatment of capacity 1.2 KL.
The potable water supply is based on Multi Utility water treatment plant. The entire
water is recycled for various purposes namely treated flush water for arboriculture, soft
water for bathing and washing purposes each of 2 lakh ltr capacity and treated water of
80000 ltr per day capacity for drinking and cooking purposes.

6. DRDE DEVELOPED BIODIGESTER / BIO TANKS
TECHNOLOGY
6
The treatment process in septic tanks attached to toilets does not
break down the waste completely.
Defense Research & Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior – an
R&D organization of DRDO, has developed a technology of bacterial
inoculums for sewage treatment under diverse geo-climatic conditions.
Recently developed technology named as 'BioTank' is the excellent low
cost alternative of the conventional septic tanks . The zero-waste bio-
digester technology breaks down human excreta completely into usable
water and gas through anaerobic process.
7. 7
Human Waste
Anaerobic bacteria
(in liquid form)
CO2 + Methane gases
Released to atmosphere
Liquid waste /
Effluent
Discharged directly
to drain/reed bed
(Can be used for
watering plants)
Can be used as Bio gas
for street lighting etc. for
community
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF BIODIGESTER / BIO TANK
8. 8
Aerobic biodegradation Anaerobic biodegradation
Forced aeration/ agitation is essential and
is energy intensive
No aeration is required
Incomplete aeration (partial aerobic
condition) leads to foul smell
Complete anaerobic conditions
Not effective in pathogen inactivation More than 99% Pathogens inactivation
Can not tolerate detergents/ phenyl Anaerobes can even degrade detergents/
phenyl
Generates large amount of sludge Sludge generation is very less
Repeated addition of bacteria/ enzyme is
required for the process
One time bacterial inoculation is enough
Maintenance & recurring cost is high Minimal maintenance & no recurring cost
AEROBIC vs ANAEROBIC BIODEGRADATION
9. 9
SEPTIC TANK BIODIGESTERS/BIO TANK
Requires larger space, bigger
volume.
Requirement is 40 to 70% less.
Not efficient Effluent is well treated and safe
Sludge needs periodic
evacuation
No such needs
Obnoxious smell No smell. Generation of odorless and
inflammable biogas
Maintenance intensive Only one time charging of Inoculums
Unhygienic disposal No such requirement
Water requirement is high Minimizes water consumption
Cost intensive Cheaper in long run
BIO TANKS vs SEPTIC TANK
10. Bacteria
10
The bacteria is developed and patented by D.R.D.O and is already
being used by Indian Army in high attitude regions even at -40 c.

12. COMPARISON OF FRP BIO-DIGESTERS AND MASONRY
BIO-TANKS
12
FRP Bio-digesters Masonry Bio-tanks
Light weight & movable. Heavy and therefore suitable as
stationary tank only.
Easy installation as readymade FRP bio-
digesters can be transported to site.
Require in situ construction.
FRP bio-digester tank has to be manufactured
in factory under controlled conditions.
Can be constructed at site by skilled
mason as per requirement.
In case of any working problem/failure,
maintenance is difficult as FRP bio-digesters
are sealed units.
Maintenance is easy and necessary
repair can be carried out at site.
Cost including fabrication & transportation is
at the higher side.
Economical in general.
The expected life of FRP tank is 20 years. The expected life of masonry bio-tank is
more than 25 years.
13. Basis of Calculations
Total Volume of Masonry Bio Tank can be calculated on the basis of 72 hours retention
period ( 3 days) and water use of 45 litres per person per day for flushing requirement
(IS 1172: 1993). Accordingly the following volumes are suggested :

15. Conclusions
1. The most Eco friendly Sewerage system designed by DRDO
2. The reduction in size and cost of STP by almost 30-40%
3. The most efficient and economic sewerage system designed so far
4. Conversion of water by almost 90% which is re-usable
5. Reduction of water consumption by almost 50%
6. No major maintenance required so almost maintenance free
7. The designed life of Bio -digester is 25 years with one time bacteria fill
8. Methane as a bi product of the process can be used for various applications
depending upon the quantity produced.
