New technologies for learning
• Personalization does not have to mean technology but it most cases
organizations are leveraging technologies—planning, advising,
relationship management, courses, and tracking to personalize
• Adaptive learning and digital courseware technologies focus more on
personalizing or adapting the course content and assessments to the
individual students
• New quality framework for selecting digital courseware,

Adaptive Learning Tool Categories
• Publisher driven—more focused on ebook replacement/content
interaction
• Platform driven, content agnostic—allows content uploads, course
maps, significant customization
• Other important categories: open (OER), faculty communication tools,
new design focused
• OTHER types of tools exist in K-12
Launching adaptive technologies
• Only a few universities have launched pilots with various
adaptive/digital tools….even less have long running big sample
studies (see SRI report on ALMAP, https://www.sri.com/work/projects/adaptive-learning-
market-acceleration-program)
• Most reports/case studies do not critique technical issues or
adherence to standards as much as the critiques on limited
effectiveness

Interoperability and Integration Latest version compliance LTI Most report easy interoperability
Personalization Critical within system No clear standard match so reports
are more on reported outcome

Analytics, Advising, and Learning
Assessment
Caliper and LTI Needs improvement as data
exchange is not widely used (yet)
Collaboration Currently not as important
Accessibility and Universal Design Critical to scale Major concerns (not just a vendor
issue)
What needs to happen next
• Adaptive Learning companies/Edtech needs to maintain/lead
adoption of open standards
• BUT higher education IT/ID community needs to demand even more
flexibility as data is incorporated into LMS and/or enterprise data
flows

New technologies for learning • Personalization does not have to mean technology but it most cases organizations are leveraging technologies—planning, advising, relationship management, courses, and tracking to personalize • Adaptive learning and digital courseware technologies focus more on personalizing or adapting the course content and assessments to the individual students • New quality framework for selecting digital courseware, http://coursewareincontext.org/ (Tyton Partners)

Adaptive Learning Tool Categories • Publisher driven—more focused on ebook replacement/content interaction • Platform driven, content agnostic—allows content uploads, course maps, significant customization • Other important categories: open (OER), faculty communication tools, new design focused • OTHER types of tools exist in K-12
  • 4. Launching adaptive technologies • Only a few universities have launched pilots with various adaptive/digital tools….even less have long running big sample studies (see SRI report on ALMAP, https://www.sri.com/work/projects/adaptive-learning- market-acceleration-program) • Most reports/case studies do not critique technical issues or adherence to standards as much as the critiques on limited effectiveness

Current State of Adaptive Learning Success NGDLE Courseware in Context Framework Reported pilots Interoperability and Integration Latest version compliance LTI Most report easy interoperability Personalization Critical within system No clear standard match so reports are more on reported outcome success Analytics, Advising, and Learning Assessment Caliper and LTI Needs improvement as data exchange is not widely used (yet) Collaboration Currently not as important Accessibility and Universal Design Critical to scale Major concerns (not just a vendor issue)
  • 6. What needs to happen next • Adaptive Learning companies/Edtech needs to maintain/lead adoption of open standards • BUT higher education IT/ID community needs to demand even more flexibility as data is incorporated into LMS and/or enterprise data flows
