4. 1. Choosing And Serving The Wrong Gods
A. Exodus 20:1-3 And God spoke all these
words, saying: {2} "I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out
of the house of bondage. {3} "You shall have
no other gods before Me.”
B. Mat 22:37-38 Jesus said to him, " 'You shall
love the LORD your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your mind.'
{38} "This is the first and great
commandment.
C. Humanism makes us our own God.
D. Hedonism makes pleasure our God.
E. Materialism makes things our God.

A. Exodus 20:4-6 "You shall not make for
yourself a carved image, or any likeness of
anything that is in heaven above, or that is in
the earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth; {5} you shall not bow down
to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your
God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of
the fathers on the children to the third and
fourth generations of those who hate Me, {6}
but showing mercy to thousands, to those
who love Me and keep My commandments.”
B. I wish I had a little red box to put my Jesus in,
I’d take him out and kiss, kiss, kiss and put
him back again???

C.Isa 44:13-17 The craftsman stretches out
his rule, He marks one out with chalk; He
fashions it with a plane, He marks it out
with the compass, And makes it like the
figure of a man, According to the beauty of
a man, that it may remain in the house.
{14} He cuts down cedars for himself, And
takes the cypress and the oak; He secures
it for himself among the trees of the forest.
He plants a pine, and the rain nourishes it.

{15} Then it shall be for a man to burn, For he
will take some of it and warm himself; Yes, he
kindles it and bakes bread; Indeed he makes a
god and worships it; He makes it a carved
image, and falls down to it. {16} He burns half
of it in the fire; With this half he eats meat; He
roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He even warms
himself and says, “Ah! I am warm, I have seen
the fire.” {17} And the rest of it he makes into a
god, His carved image. He falls down before it
and worships it, Prays to it and says, “Deliver
me, for you are my god!”
C. Some just want God available when they need
or want Him.
8. 3. Not Taking God Seriously
A.Exodus 20:7 "You shall not take the name
of the LORD your God in vain, for the
LORD will not hold him guiltless who
takes His name in vain.”
B.Mat 12:36-37 “But I say to you that for
every idle word men may speak, they will
give account of it in the day of judgment.
{37} “For by your words you will be
justified, and by your words you will be
condemned.”
9. 4. Failing To Rest & Reflect
A. Exodus 20:8-11 "Remember the Sabbath day, to
keep it holy. {9} Six days you shall labor and do all
your work, {10} but the seventh day is the Sabbath
of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work:
you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your
male servant, nor your female servant, nor your
cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
{11} For in six days the LORD made the heavens
and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and
rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD
blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.”
B. Mark 2:27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was
made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
C. It is a principle not a rule, it is a gift not a burden.
10. 5. Failing To Honor Our Parents
A.Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your
mother, that your days may be long upon
the land which the LORD your God is
giving you.”
B.Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in
the Lord, for this is right. {2} “Honor your
father and mother,” which is the first
commandment with promise: {3} “that it
may be well with you and you may live
long on the earth.”
11. 6. Not Taking Life Seriously
A. Exodus 20:13 "You shall not murder.”
B. Mat 5:21-22 "You have heard that it was said
to those of old, 'You shall not murder, and
whoever murders will be in danger of the
judgment.' {22} "But I say to you that
whoever is angry with his brother without a
cause shall be in danger of the judgment.
And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!'
shall be in danger of the council. But
whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger
of hell fire.
C. We move towards murder when we despise,
demean, damage or diminish another person
12. 6. Not Taking Life Seriously
D.Rom 13:8-10 Owe no one anything except
to love one another, for he who loves
another has fulfilled the law. {9} For the
commandments, “You shall not commit
adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You
shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false
witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if
there is any other commandment, are all
summed up in this saying, namely, “You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.” {10}
Love does no harm to a neighbor;
therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
13. 7. Failing To Keep Our Marriage Vows
A. Exodus 20:14 "You shall not commit
adultery.”
B. Heb 13:4 Marriage is honorable among all,
and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and
adulterers God will judge.
C. Sex is God’s idea
D. Sex outside of marriage is a good thing in the
wrong place
E. Adultery is more often the sin of the fool,
than the sin of the wicked
F. How adultery begins - The flirt – emotional
connection – the first sign of secrecy or
shame

G.Mat 5:27-28 "You have heard that it was said
to those of old, 'You shall not commit
adultery.' {28} "But I say to you that whoever
looks at a woman to lust for her has already
committed adultery with her in his heart.
H. God says run - 1 Cor 6:18 Flee sexual
immorality. Every sin that a man does is
outside the body, but he who commits sexual
immorality sins against his own body.

15. 8. Taking What Is Not Ours To Take
A.Exodus 20:15 "You shall not steal.”
B.Eph 4:28 Let him who stole steal no
longer, but rather let him labor, working
with his hands what is good, that he may
have something to give him who has need.
C.3 kinds of stealing…
1. taking by force
2. taking by deception
3. taking by defrauding – failing to pay
what we owe
16. 9. Failing To Tell The Truth About Others
A. Exodus 20:16 "You shall not bear false
witness against your neighbor.”
B. Eph 4:15, 29 but, speaking the truth in love,
may grow up in all things into Him who is the
head; Christ;… {29} Let no corrupt word
proceed out of your mouth, but what is good
for necessary edification, that it may impart
grace to the hearers.
C. Before speaking negatively about another
person, ask 4 questions
1. Is this true?
2. Is this necessary?
3. Is this loving?
4. Is this helpful or hurtful?
17. 10. Chasing What We Can't Have
A. Exodus 20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's
house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife,
nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor
his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your
neighbor's."
B. James 4:1-2 Where do wars and fights come from
among you? Do they not come from your desires
for pleasure that war in your members? {2} You
lust and do not have. You murder and covet and
cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not
have because you do not ask.
C. Phil 4:11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I
have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:
D. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I
cannot change, the courage to change the things I
can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
