A.Introduction to graduate study
B.There is a right way to study
C.There is especially a right way to study
the Bible
D.We will be looking at five rules for
bible study
4. I. STUDY THE BIBLE PRAYERFULLY.
A. Before a person ever opens his Bible, he
should fall down on his knees and ask for
God’s blessings.
B. Paul reminds us of this principle as he
prays for the Christians at Colossae - Col.
1:9 “For this reason we also, since the day
we heard it, do not cease to pray for you,
and to ask that you may be filled with the
knowledge of His will in all wisdom and
spiritual understanding”.
5. I. STUDY THE BIBLE PRAYERFULLY.
C. Paul prayed for the Ephesians knowledge and
understanding - Ephesians 1:15-19 Therefore I also,
after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your
love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks
for you, making mention of you in my prayers:
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father
of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and
revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of
your understanding being enlightened; that you
may know what is the hope of His calling, what are
the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the
saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of
His power toward us who believe, according to the
working of His mighty power
6. II. STUDY THE BIBLE CAREFULLY.
A. One must never study the Bible with a
flippant and irreverent view of God and His
Word.
B. Paul instructed Timothy handle the Word
carefully - 2 Tim. 2:15 “Study to show
yourself approved unto God a workman who
does not need to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the word of truth”.
C. Carefully do what God commands -
Deuteronomy 5:32 Therefore you shall be
careful to do as the LORD your God has
commanded you; you shall not turn aside to
the right hand or to the left.
7. III. STUDY THE BIBLE PRACTICALLY.
A. For the Word of God to do us any good, we must
apply its teachings to our daily lives.
B. Paul reminded the Christians in Philippi of this when
he said in Phil. 4:9 “The things which you learned
and received and heard and saw in me, these do
and the God of peace will be with you”.
C. Those who do God’s will enter heaven - Matthew
7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,'
shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does
the will of My Father in heaven.
D. We are blessed, not by knowing but by doing - John
13:17 If you know these things, blessed are you if
you do them.
E. Be doers not just hearers - James 1:22 But be
doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving
yourselves.
8. IV. STUDY THE BIBLE IMPARTIALLY.
A. To study God’s Word correctly, a person
must put aside all prejudice, bias and
preconceived notions of God and His will.
B. We must have the attitude of Samuel, who
said, 1 Sam. 3:10 “Speak Lord, for your
servant hears”.
C. We also need to remember the words of the
Proverbs writer, Proverbs 16:25 There is a
way that seems right to a man, But its end is
the way of death.
D. We must allow God to direct our steps -
Jeremiah 10:23 O LORD, I know the way of
man is not in himself; It is not in man who
walks to direct his own steps.
9. V. STUDY THE BIBLE EXPECTANTLY.
A. If we wish to receive the full blessings of
Bible study, we must study it expecting
several things.
B. For example, we should study the Bible
expecting to understand it (Eph. 3:4).
C. We should study the Bible expecting its
principles to bless us as they are applied to
our lives (Ps. 1:1-3).
D. We should study the Bible expecting to learn
how to be set free from sin (Jn. 8:32).
E. We should study the Bible expecting to learn
how to be saved (Acts 2:38).
F. We should study the Bible expecting to learn
how to live pleasingly to God (1 Jn. 3:22
10. VI. STUDY THE BIBLE REGULARLY.
A. The Bereans searched the Scriptures daily - Acts
17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in
Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all
readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find
out whether these things were so.
B. Meditate day and night on God’s law - Psalm 1:1-3
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of
the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor
sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in
the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day
and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the
rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he
does shall prosper.
C. Continue steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine - Acts
2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles'
doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and
in prayers.

God, we will follow these rules for Bible study
B. Revelation 20:12-15 And I saw the dead, small and
great, standing before God, and books were
opened. And another book was opened, which is
the Book of Life. And the dead were judged
according to their works, by the things which were
written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead
who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up
the dead who were in them. And they were judged,
each one according to his works. 14 Then Death
and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is
the second death. 15 And anyone not found
written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of
fire.
