The document discusses implicit and unconscious bias. It notes that the human brain takes in 11 million bits of information per minute but is consciously aware of only 40 bits. As a result, the brain relies on mental shortcuts and assumptions that can lead to biases. These biases can be based on factors like race, gender, age, and appearance. The document provides examples of research showing implicit bias and discusses strategies for recognizing and addressing bias, such as perspective taking, increasing intergroup contact, and improving decision-making processes. The goal is to help reduce the gap between professed values and actual behaviors.

The Human Brain
How much of what you see, hear, feel,
experience, etc. are you aware of?
How much of what you do is under
conscious control?
How accurate is your judgment of what
you see, hear, feel, experience, etc.?
How fair minded are you?

34. Implicit Bias
 An Implicit Bias is a preference for OR against a
person or group of people that operate at the
subconscious level. We are NOT aware that we
have them.
 Triggered automatically through rapid
association of people/groups/objects and our
attitudes AND stereotypes about them.
 Run contrary to our stated beliefs and attitudes.
We can say that we believe in equity (and truly
believe it). But then behave in ways that are
biased and discriminatory.
