Poetic
Techniques
AIMS:
1. Have a written list of techniques that
can be used in poetry to convey
meaning
2. Practice using these techniques
 Is the literary term used for language
and description that appeals to our five
senses. When a writer attempts to
describe something so that it appeals
to our sense of smell, sight, taste,
touch, or hearing; he/she has
used imagery.
Imagery
I could hear the popping and
crackling as mom dropped the
bacon into the frying pan, and soon
the salty, greasy smell wafted
toward me.
Imagery Example:
The poet uses rhyme, rhythm,
and/or repetition to help the
listener to hear the poem. The
poem is given a beat.
Sound
The beat of a poem, which can be
attained through syllables,
repetition and rhyme.
Rhythm
What a poem looks like.
E.g. Diamantes in the shape of a
diamond.
Form
Comparing one thing to another,
using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Example: cute as a kitten
Simile
Comparison not using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Example: Freddie is a pig when he
eats
Metaphor
 The use of words that imitate sounds.
 Examples:
1. Bang!
2. Meow
3. Plop
Onomatopoeia
A figure of speech in which an
object or animal is given human
feelings, thoughts, or attitudes
Example:
- “The Sun smiled at us”.
Personification
Extreme exaggeration
E.g. I have asked you a million
times!
Hyperbole
The pattern in which rhyme sounds
occur in a stanza.
 Example - the pattern ABAB CDCD
EFEF GG
Rhyme Scheme
 The occurrence of the same letter or
sound at the beginning of adjacent or
closely connected words.
E.g. Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled
Peppers
Alliteration
Repeated use of sounds, words, or
ideas for effect and emphasis in a
poem
Repetition
 In your English books, write two examples of
each of the following:
- Alliteration
- Simile
- Metaphor
- Hyperbole
- Onomatopoeia
- Personification
