“Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand
network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources
(e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can
be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort
or service provider interaction.”

-- National Institute of Standards and Technology
Huh?

Huh?
Think of it this way...
The Cloud allows you to
   treat computers...
...like electricity
You pay for only what
       you use
You don’t have to build
your own infrastructure
You use as much as you
need, whenever you need
What does that mean to
         me?

Who are these
“Cloud Providers”?
Three Cloud
service models...
Types of Cloud Services

            IaaS
   (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
Types of Cloud Services

            PaaS
     (Platform-as-a-Service)

            IaaS
   (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
Types of Cloud Services

            SaaS
     (Software-as-a-Service)

            PaaS
     (Platform-as-a-Service)

            IaaS
   (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
Types of “Cloud” Services

             SaaS
      (Software-as-a-Service)

             PaaS
      (Platform-as-a-Service)

             IaaS
    (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
IaaS
                                                      (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)

                               Examples: Amazon EC2, Rackspace Servers

You have “root” access on a virtual Linux or Windows
                               machine

You are responsible for installing system packages,
                               scaling, and failover

The big difference is that you don’t own, manage, or
                               commit to the hardware

Most discussion about the Cloud focus on the IaaS
layer, and is the easiest for companies to understand*

* Most of this presentation focuses on IaaS as well
PaaS
              (Platform-as-a-Service)

Examples: Google App Engine, Force.com

Your application lives in a sandbox, with limited
access to the O.S. and file system

In exchange, the system automatically handles
configuration, scaling, and failover

Similar to the advantages that modern languages
(e.g. Ruby-on-Rails) provide

Cost based on usage
SaaS
              (Sofware-as-a-Service)

Examples: Salesforce.com, Twitter

A fully-baked service that requires no coding

Flexibility and customization is limited to what
the service allows you to do

Advantage of SaaS services over locally installed
software is that you don’t have to maintain it,
and you can use it anywhere

Generally subscription based
What makes you a
      “Cloud”
1. Elastic (on-demand capacity)

2.Self-service (provisioning through API/UI)

3.Pay-for-usage (no long term contract)

4.Virtualized (all servers look/act identically)
Other “Cloud” services
Storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Rackspace cloudfiles)

Load balancing (e.g. UltraDNS, Amazon Elastic Load Balancing)

CDN (e.g. Akamai, Limelight, Amazon CloudFront)

Backups (e.g. Carbonite, Mozy)

Productivity (e.g. 37signals Basecamp, Zoho)

Personal (e.g. YouTube, Facebook)
Why is the Cloud such a
       big deal?

You lose
 control
You lose visibility
You lose a
   person
 to blame
You need to trust the
               Cloud
               won’t
               vanish
Where do things go
   from here?
Where do things go
   from here?
Early adopters will prove the ROI

Cloud providers will continue to innovate and
address concerns

Trust in the cloud will increase

Companies will stop asking “What can I move to
the Cloud?”, and instead ask “What CAN’T I
move to the Cloud?

Eventually PaaS will overtake IaaS

The Cloud - An introduction

  • 1. The Cloud An introduction 4/19/10 © Neustar Inc. / Proprietary and Confidential
  • 2. “Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” -- National Institute of Standards and Technology
  • 4. Think of it this way...
  • 5. The Cloud allows you to treat computers...
  • 7. You pay for only what you use
  • 8. You don’t have to build your own infrastructure
  • 9. You use as much as you need, whenever you need
  • 10. What does that mean to me?
  • 11. Pre-Cloud Regular You Datacenter
  • 12. Pre-Cloud I need 30 servers Regular You Datacenter
  • 13. Pre-Cloud Give me a couple weeks Regular You Datacenter
  • 14. Pre-Cloud I only need them for 1 day Regular You Datacenter
  • 15. Pre-Cloud That’ll be $10,000* Regular You Datacenter * Based on 1 month contract
  • 16. Post-Cloud Cloud You Provider
  • 17. Post-Cloud I need 30 servers Cloud You Provider
  • 18. Post-Cloud Done Cloud You Provider
  • 19. Post-Cloud I only need them for 1 day Cloud You Provider
  • 20. Post-Cloud That’ll be $100* Cloud You Provider * Based on 1 day usage
  • 21. Who are these “Cloud Providers”?
  • 22.
  • 24. Types of Cloud Services IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
  • 25. Types of Cloud Services PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
  • 26. Types of Cloud Services SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
  • 27. Types of “Cloud” Services SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)
  • 28. IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) Examples: Amazon EC2, Rackspace Servers You have “root” access on a virtual Linux or Windows machine You are responsible for installing system packages, scaling, and failover The big difference is that you don’t own, manage, or commit to the hardware Most discussion about the Cloud focus on the IaaS layer, and is the easiest for companies to understand* * Most of this presentation focuses on IaaS as well
  • 29. PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) Examples: Google App Engine, Force.com Your application lives in a sandbox, with limited access to the O.S. and file system In exchange, the system automatically handles configuration, scaling, and failover Similar to the advantages that modern languages (e.g. Ruby-on-Rails) provide Cost based on usage
  • 30. SaaS (Sofware-as-a-Service) Examples: Salesforce.com, Twitter A fully-baked service that requires no coding Flexibility and customization is limited to what the service allows you to do Advantage of SaaS services over locally installed software is that you don’t have to maintain it, and you can use it anywhere Generally subscription based
  • 31. What makes you a “Cloud” 1. Elastic (on-demand capacity) 2.Self-service (provisioning through API/UI) 3.Pay-for-usage (no long term contract) 4.Virtualized (all servers look/act identically)
  • 32. Other “Cloud” services Storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Rackspace cloudfiles) Load balancing (e.g. UltraDNS, Amazon Elastic Load Balancing) CDN (e.g. Akamai, Limelight, Amazon CloudFront) Backups (e.g. Carbonite, Mozy) Productivity (e.g. 37signals Basecamp, Zoho) Personal (e.g. YouTube, Facebook)

  • 50. Where do things go from here? Early adopters will prove the ROI Cloud providers will continue to innovate and address concerns Trust in the cloud will increase Companies will stop asking “What can I move to the Cloud?”, and instead ask “What CAN’T I move to the Cloud? Eventually PaaS will overtake IaaS

Editor's Notes

  1. - No question people are excited about the cloud - This graph shows the number of searches on google for the term “cloud computing”. - Three years ago it was barely a blit on the radar, and today we have conferences like this all around the world.
  2. - Because you give up control over some of your companies most important assets. - Online services or e-commerce company, where downtime and response time are critical, it’s hard to give up that control.
  3. - You also lose visibility into what’s going on with your infrastructure - You can’t walk up to your servers and look at the blinking lights or check if the cable is plugged in. - You can’t listen to the machines for problems or kick it when it’s acting up. - You need to rely on the cloud provider for these things, and again that takes getting used to.
  4. - One of the most difficult things to get used to is not having someone to yell at when something breaks. - You have to count on your cloud provider to respond to issues - Getting mad at your own IT people won’t help.
  5. - Lastly, you need to trust your data won’t disappear - be stable - Problems that the cloud provider has end up being your problems - Especially in the eyes of your customers. They don’t care that it isn’t really your fault. - They will blame you.
