What is heritage?
What is tourism?
What is cultural heritage tourism?
• “Travelling to experience the places and activities that
authentically represent the stories and people of the past
  and present."

(The National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States)
Cultural Heritage Tourism
• “Cultural heritage tourism is not new. For centuries, visitors have
embarked on excursions around the world that explore ancient and
current cultures, their architecture, cuisine, craft, literature, music,
art, customs and traditions. They flock to historical places to
understand the impact of past generations as demonstrated through
inventions, politics, sports, religion, entertainment, industry and
  commerce.”
• In the past decade, the cultural heritage tourism movement in the US
  has gained recognition and momentum.

                                                     www.culturalheritagetourism.org
Facts about cultural heritage tourism
• There are 870 cultural heritage institutions in the US
• There are more than one million historical sites and objects identified
by the American government. The site or object must be
   •   1) associated with a significant event;
   •   2) associated with a significant person;
   •   3) have architectural or archaeological significance;
   • 4) 5) be at least 50 years old.
• There are more than 2200 National Historic Landmarks.
• Congress has officially designated 25 National Heritage Areas in the
  US.
                                                               www.culturalheritagetourism.org
Remember…
• CULTURE is the material and “invisible” ways of life of PAST AND
  PRESENT POPULATIONS

• HERITAGE is the history of a population

• TOURISM is travelling and exploring
And…
• Cultural heritage tourism often focuses on:
   • Groups of people who have been historically oppressed…
      • Women
      • Racial, ethnic, religious, and cultural minorities (example: European Jews, African-
        Americans, Native American Indians)
   • …but it also often focuses on the “great civilizations” of the past and present
      • Romans
      • Egyptians
      • Aztec
Do some research about cultural heritage
tourism:

With a partner, try to find:
• A specific cultural heritage tourism site:
   • Where is it?
   • Which cultural group is its focus?
   • Why is it important?
   • What do you think it could teach people today?
For homework:
• Write one paragraph (8-10 sentences) answering the question:

How would you advertise cultural heritage
tourism if you worked in a travel agency?

(Remember to use the 2nd conditional: If I worked in a travel agency, I
would advertise / If I had to advertise cultural heritage tourism, I
  would say…)
