New disk-only I/O drawer:
The IBM5887 EXP24S is a high-density, high-performance SFF drive drawer, holding up to 24 SAS drives in
just 2U of 19-inch rack space. This is twice the number of drives compared to the currently offered #5886
EXP12S I/O drawer (#5886) and its twelve 3.5-inch drive capacity. The EXP24S can also be ordered in
mode 1, 2, or 4, providing additional configuration flexibility. In addition to 6 Gb SAS capability, the EXP24S
SFF drives provide significant energy savings compared to the EXP12S 3.5-inch
drives.

IBM5887 Modes are set by IBM Manufacturing
No option to reset after IBM ships is announced
Change only one part at one time!
The Mode setting is stored in the two RAID controllers and at the midplane.
The majority of mode informations overwrite the mode setting in the minority part.
The feature 5887 EXP24S can be ordered from the IBM Manufacturing plant in mode 1, mode 2, or mode 4.
In mode 1, the EXP24S is treated as one set of 24 bays. In mode 2, the EXP24S is treated as two sets of
12 bays. In mode 4, the EXP24S is treated as four sets of six bays. These options are also called zoning
modes.
IBM i supports mode 1.
AIX/Linux/VIOS supports modes 1, 2, and 4.
There is no process as of April 2011 to change the EXP24S mode once the drawer is shipped from IBM.

The FC 5887 uses the following adapters and speeds
1. Mode 1
The FC 5887 box in Mode 1 will operate as a single set of 24 drives. All SAS connection on an
expander can see all the drives and the other SAS cable connections. Newly manufactured FC 5887
and ESMs will default to Mode 1. Also at manufacturing build time the ESMs can be set to mode 1.
When a drawer is set to mode 1 the backplane and both ESMs will know that they are in mode 1.
When an ESM card is replace in the field, the new ESM will match the mode of the other ESM and
backplane before becoming active. See section 3.2 for supported configurations. Because of the must
operate with older 3G integrated SAS adapter the port expanders will use subtractive decoding for
drive assignments when the connection is through the T1 connectors.
2. Mode 2
The FC 5887 box will use zoning to support a Split backplane mode 2 that logically breaks the box in
to two groups of 12 drives each. In this mode the adapters on ESM connectors T3 will see the first
12 drives and the adapters on connector T2 will see the last 12 drives. Also the ESMs will report
different SES WWIDs to adapter on the two connectors (see section 5.2.10). The adapter(s) on
connector T3 will see one SAS WWID and the adapter on Connector T2 will see a different SAS
WWID for the SES device. Only the SES device WWIDs will be different all other WWIDs will be
the same. The adapters on the T3 connectors cannot see the adapters on the T2 connectors. The
PHYs to connector T1 will respond to SES and STP commands but all drives will be zoned out on this
connector. At manufacturing build time the ESMs will be set to mode 2. When a drawer is set to
mode 2 the backplane and both ESMs will know that they are in mode 2. When an ESM card is
replace in the field, the new ESM will match the mode of the other ESM and backplane before
becoming active. See section 3.3 for supported configurations.
3. Mode 4
The FC 5887 box will use zoning to support a Split backplane mode 4 that logically breaks the box in
to four groups of 6 drives each. In this mode the adapter on ESM connectors T3 phys 0 and 1 will see
the first six drives, the adapter on ESM connectors T3 phys 2 and 3 will see drives 7 through 12, the
adapter on ESM connectors T2 phys 0 and 1 will see drives 13 through 18, and the adapter on
connector T2 phys 2 and 3 will see the last 6 drives. Also the ESMs will report different SES
WWIDs to each adapter . Only the SES device WWIDs will be different all other WWIDs will be
the same. The adapter in one zone cannot see the adapters on the other zones. The PHYs to
connector T1 will respond to SES and STP commands but all drives will be zoned out on this
connector. At manufacturing build time the ESMs will be set to mode 4. When a drawer is set to
mode 4 the backplane and both ESMs will know that they are in mode 4. When an ESM card is
replace in the field, the new ESM will match the mode of the other ESM and backplane before
becoming active.
Note: Changing the mode is not currently supported in the field.
Enclosure Serial Number ( Repair one component at a time )
Enclosure serial number is stored on the mid-plane assembly and in each ESM. If the midplane is replaced,
follow the documented procedures to ensure the serial number is kept for the enclosure.
A new mid-plane has the serial number as a default if ASCII zeros or blanks.
If the Serial number on the mid-plane is default value, then the ESMs compare their values for the
enclosure serial number.
If the ESM serial numbers match each other, this number will be written to the mid-plane enclosure serial
number location.
If the ESM serial numbers do not match each other, amber LEDs will turn on ESMs along with the
enclosures front fault Identify/Attention LED. No SAS operations are allowed.
IBM 5887 – EXP24S INTERNAL USE
Levko Fattori INTERNAL USE
5
If the enclosure serial number value in the mid-plane is not default value, it is assumed to be the correct
value and this value will be written to the ESMs if it does not match the current ESM values for the
enclosure serial number

Led indicators
Enclosure Services Manager Locations (Rear)
The enclosure contains nine LED indicators.
Six link status (green) LEDs, a power (green) LED, a status/fault (amber) LED, and a locate (blue) LED (Not
used on this unit). The link status LEDs are arranged near the SAS connectors and the remaining three LEDs
are between the Ethernet connector and the two upstream SAS connectors as shown in Figure 3. This image
also shows the locations for the rear connectors.
Note: The RS232 and Enet ports are Not functional ports.
Figure 3. No Ethernet
The power supplies contain four LED indicators. AC Good (green), DC Good (green), Alert (amber) and Not
used on this model (blue). One does not need to wait for it to be "On" to remove the power supply for
service.
Note: Blue is not used in P/I applications.
These LEDs are configured as shown in Figure 4
Figure 4. Power Supply LED Indicators
There are three SAS 4x mini ports on each ESM. The T1 port has a different key than the T2 and
T3 ports. T1 connector is used when connecting from a System CEC SAS port. T2 and T3 connectors
are used when connecting from an IOA.
The ethernet port will not be used in the FC5887. It may have a plug in it.
The connector with the wrench is used for lab debug; it will not be used in the field.
LEDs for the ports.
• They will indicate the status of two lanes within the 4x SAS connector.
• If either of the links within the specified 2x are up (linked) then the LED is turned on solid. Otherwise it
is off
• YO or YI cables plugged into the connector will only illuminate one link LED.
• X cables plugged into will illuminate both link LEDs.

  • 3. IBM 5887 – EXP24S INTERNAL USE Levko Fattori INTERNAL USE 3 New disk-only I/O drawer: The IBM5887 EXP24S is a high-density, high-performance SFF drive drawer, holding up to 24 SAS drives in just 2U of 19-inch rack space. This is twice the number of drives compared to the currently offered #5886 EXP12S I/O drawer (#5886) and its twelve 3.5-inch drive capacity. The EXP24S can also be ordered in mode 1, 2, or 4, providing additional configuration flexibility. In addition to 6 Gb SAS capability, the EXP24S SFF drives provide significant energy savings compared to the EXP12S 3.5-inch drives. 1 set 24 bays AIX, IBM i, Linux, VIOS All adapter/controllers 2 set 12 bays AIX, Linux, VIOS Not IBM i All adapter/controllers 4 set 6 bays AIX, Linux, VIOS Not IBM i Only #5901/5278 adapters IBM i 6.1 or later (V6.1.1 or V7.1 Load Source is supported) IBM5887 Modes are set by IBM Manufacturing No option to reset after IBM ships is announced Change only one part at one time! In mode 2, the EXP24S is treated as two sets of 12 bays. In mode 4, the EXP24S is treated as four sets of six bays. These options are also called zoning modes. IBM i supports mode 1. AIX/Linux/VIOS supports modes 1, 2, and 4. There is no process as of April 2011 to change the EXP24S mode once the drawer is shipped from IBM.
  • 4. IBM 5887 – EXP24S INTERNAL USE Levko Fattori INTERNAL USE 4 The FC 5887 uses the following adapters and speeds 1. Mode 1 The FC 5887 box in Mode 1 will operate as a single set of 24 drives. All SAS connection on an expander can see all the drives and the other SAS cable connections. Newly manufactured FC 5887 and ESMs will default to Mode 1. Also at manufacturing build time the ESMs can be set to mode 1. When a drawer is set to mode 1 the backplane and both ESMs will know that they are in mode 1. When an ESM card is replace in the field, the new ESM will match the mode of the other ESM and backplane before becoming active. See section 3.2 for supported configurations. Because of the must operate with older 3G integrated SAS adapter the port expanders will use subtractive decoding for drive assignments when the connection is through the T1 connectors. 2. Mode 2 The FC 5887 box will use zoning to support a Split backplane mode 2 that logically breaks the box in to two groups of 12 drives each. In this mode the adapters on ESM connectors T3 will see the first 12 drives and the adapters on connector T2 will see the last 12 drives. Also the ESMs will report different SES WWIDs to adapter on the two connectors (see section 5.2.10). The adapter(s) on connector T3 will see one SAS WWID and the adapter on Connector T2 will see a different SAS WWID for the SES device. Only the SES device WWIDs will be different all other WWIDs will be the same. The adapters on the T3 connectors cannot see the adapters on the T2 connectors. The PHYs to connector T1 will respond to SES and STP commands but all drives will be zoned out on this connector. At manufacturing build time the ESMs will be set to mode 2. When a drawer is set to mode 2 the backplane and both ESMs will know that they are in mode 2. When an ESM card is replace in the field, the new ESM will match the mode of the other ESM and backplane before becoming active. See section 3.3 for supported configurations. 3. Mode 4 The FC 5887 box will use zoning to support a Split backplane mode 4 that logically breaks the box in to four groups of 6 drives each. In this mode the adapter on ESM connectors T3 phys 0 and 1 will see the first six drives, the adapter on ESM connectors T3 phys 2 and 3 will see drives 7 through 12, the adapter on ESM connectors T2 phys 0 and 1 will see drives 13 through 18, and the adapter on connector T2 phys 2 and 3 will see the last 6 drives. Also the ESMs will report different SES WWIDs to each adapter . Only the SES device WWIDs will be different all other WWIDs will be the same. The adapter in one zone cannot see the adapters on the other zones. The PHYs to connector T1 will respond to SES and STP commands but all drives will be zoned out on this connector. At manufacturing build time the ESMs will be set to mode 4. When a drawer is set to mode 4 the backplane and both ESMs will know that they are in mode 4. When an ESM card is replace in the field, the new ESM will match the mode of the other ESM and backplane before becoming active. Note: Changing the mode is not currently supported in the field. Enclosure Serial Number ( Repair one component at a time ) Enclosure serial number is stored on the mid-plane assembly and in each ESM. If the midplane is replaced, follow the documented procedures to ensure the serial number is kept for the enclosure. A new mid-plane has the serial number as a default if ASCII zeros or blanks. If the Serial number on the mid-plane is default value, then the ESMs compare their values for the enclosure serial number. If the ESM serial numbers match each other, this number will be written to the mid-plane enclosure serial number location. If the ESM serial numbers do not match each other, amber LEDs will turn on ESMs along with the enclosures front fault Identify/Attention LED. No SAS operations are allowed.
  • 5. IBM 5887 – EXP24S INTERNAL USE Levko Fattori INTERNAL USE 5 If the enclosure serial number value in the mid-plane is not default value, it is assumed to be the correct value and this value will be written to the ESMs if it does not match the current ESM values for the enclosure serial number Additional Information can be found in announcement letter IBM United States Hardware Announcement 111-065 April 12, 2011 : http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS111-065 IBM SAS Drawers and Adapters Deep Dives This presentation is a technical deep dive covering the IBM Power Systems EXP24S IO Drawer and various SAS adapter and SAS cabling options. Six link status (green) LEDs, a power (green) LED, a status/fault (amber) LED, and a locate (blue) LED (Not used on this unit). The link status LEDs are arranged near the SAS connectors and the remaining three LEDs are between the Ethernet connector and the two upstream SAS connectors as shown in Figure 3. This image also shows the locations for the rear connectors. Note: The RS232 and Enet ports are Not functional ports. Figure 3. No Ethernet The power supplies contain four LED indicators. AC Good (green), DC Good (green), Alert (amber) and Not used on this model (blue). One does not need to wait for it to be "On" to remove the power supply for service. Note: Blue is not used in P/I applications. These LEDs are configured as shown in Figure 4 Figure 4. Power Supply LED Indicators There are three SAS 4x mini ports on each ESM. The T1 port has a different key than the T2 and T3 ports. T1 connector is used when connecting from a System CEC SAS port. T2 and T3 connectors are used when connecting from an IOA. Otherwise it is off • YO or YI cables plugged into the connector will only illuminate one link LED. • X cables plugged into will illuminate both link LEDs.
