This document defines and provides examples of the eight parts of speech in English: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. Nouns name people, places, things, ideas, and events. Pronouns take the place of nouns. Adjectives describe nouns. Verbs show actions. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Conjunctions connect words and sentences. Prepositions specify places, directions, and times. Interjections express emotions and are followed by punctuation. Articles modify nouns.

is name of persons, places, things,
ideas and events.
Example: Jimmy read a book in the
zoo.

3. PRONOUN
is a word that takes the place of a
noun.
Example: Tara is Indian. She is
beautiful.

4. ADJECTIVE
is a word that describes a noun.
Example: He was more
intelligent than his sister was.

5. VERB
is a word that shows what something
or someone is doing.
Example: Mary sleeps on the
couch.

6. ADVERB
is a word that modifies an action verb,
an adjective or another adverb
Example: The teacher carefully graded
the homework.

7. CONJUNCTION
are words that connect the words,
phrases, clauses or even entire
sentences.
Example: Ignacio loves to
dance, but Rocco has no rhythm.

8. PREPOSITION
are words that specify places,
direction and time.
Example: The ball rolled under the
table.

9. INTERJECTION
is a word that express feelings or
emotions.(they are at the beginning
of a sentences followed by ! Or ,)
Example: Oh, we’re late for the
movie.

10. ARTICLE
Modifiers (adjectives & adverbs) can
appear between an article and a
noun.
Example: A sunset
