What Is The Mood Of The Judgement Of Paris
he Judgement of Paris tells the story of Edouard Manet, Ernest Meissonier, and an artistic revolution
that brought the world Impressionism. Ross King contrasts the lives and artistic struggles of the two
painters against the backdrop of the artistic center of the world, Paris. The Judgement of Paris
presents the careers of the two protagonists to symbolize the old and the new, the archaic and
modern and how the two are received by the critics of the Salon. Meissonier plays "the most famous
and successful painter of the nineteenth century," while Manet "heralded the most radical change in
the history of art since the Renaissance."
The Salon was the official art exhibition of the Academie des Beaux–Arts in Paris, in the nineteenth
century. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is ironic that Meissonier played such a large role in the story of the rise of Impressionism because
he was known for his detailed and accurate history paintings. In the artistic revolution of Realism
and Impressionism, Meissonier became identified with those who blocked these developments. The
first chapter discusses how detailed his works are stating his "punctilious craftsmanship" and how
even though his painting were small in size, they "rewarded the closest and most prolonged
observation.". This is ironic because the other artists who are discussed were reprimanded for their
controversial and noticeable mark–making. In the next chapter, Meissonier is compared to Manet:
"Two years earlier a critic had praised Meissonier for painting his bonshommes so realistically that
their lips appeared to move. Such mind–boggling manual dexterity and painstaking dedication to
minutia were entirely absent from Manet's work. He applied his paint thickly and in broad
brushstrokes, suppressing finer details such as the facial features of his reeling drunkard and taking
instead a more abstract approach to visual

New York And Paris Comparison
The city that never sleeps and the city of lights
If you ask anyone about their favorite cities in the world, usually they will say
Paris and New York.
The two cities been on every traveler's bucket list for years . their Unique
Atmospheres , their spectacular sights, and their intriguing lifestyles fascinated many people around
the world. Both New York and Paris got characterized by their architecture , their attractions , and
their population The architecture of the two cities can be described as a " personal style " that both
cities became known for. New York is most closely associated with buildings , skyscrapers in
particular. The city has amassed one of the largest and most varied collection of skyscrapers in the
world. It's Architecturally significant buildings in it wide range of styles , portray different historical
and cultural periods , like the Woolworth Building, an early gothic revival skyscraper with large–
scale gothic architectural detail. And The Chrysler building ,which considered by many historians
and architects to be one of New York's finest. While New York is famous for its buildings, Paris
however is famous for it elegant Architecture, its museums and palaces. The typical Haussmann
buildings with black iron railings and hanging baskets are the epitome of Paris. such as Notre Dame
and the mesmerizing Sainte– Chapelle, add another dimension to the architectural beauty of the city.

Homer's Relationship With Paris And Aphrodite
Helen, the face that launched a thousand ships. In Homer's epic poem, Iliad, he describes Helen of
Troy as the most beautiful woman in the world. The introduction of the Iliad states that when Paris
steals Helen from her husband Menelaus, a Greek Chieftain, the Achaeans band together and cross
the Aegean Sea to wage war against Troy, a gracious, prosperous city in Asia Minor. Their motive is
revenge . After fighting for nine years in a land that is not their own, the Greeks miss "the rich fields
and glorious feasts that supposedly make combat worth–while. Both sides have trouble
remembering why they are fighting in the first place" Under the leadership of Menelaus's brother
Agamemnon, the Greeks fight around Troy for ten years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In each of the three examples listed above the young women are beautiful, they are presented by
their creators as vixens who use their siren ways to entice and entrap men into their seductive webs.
Eventually each man falls victim to the seductress, living the rest of their days a ruined man. This is
how it is presented to the audience, but is this what really happens? Like Helen, these three
characters are in fact, victims of society and the men they seduce.
Helen is the daughter of Zeus, prized for her beauty. Throughout the span of history she is that by
which all female beauty is measured. Her beauty is not subjective but rather absolute. She is the
only female in history who can rally an entire army's response and hold them in battle for over ten
years just to bring her home. Her iconic image that spans all of history has been twisted into
something very different than what was presented by Homer in the Iliad. Hellen is exploited by the
men who worship her, and the gods that favor her.
In order to fully understand the relationship between Paris and Helen, the reader must first
understand the relationship between Paris and Aphrodite. Athena and Hera are on the side of the
Greeks while Aphrodite favors the Trojans. This is because of a dispute between the three about who
was most beautiful. Paris, who was judge in the beauty contest, chose

The Paris Eiffel Tower
1.0 Introduction.
The topic I am going to write about is The Eiffel Tower in France about its structure, history etc.
Because Eiffel Tower is a very significant man–made building at that time(1889) and still the most
famous and recognizable tower people could think of in the world nowadays.
1.1 History and background of The Eiffel Tower.
The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, France, buildt in 1889 and it is 1063 feet tall. The reason of the
name of the Eiffel Tower is because it was named after Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who was a famous
civil engineer and architect. The tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris in memory
of the centenary of the French Revolution. It means too much for the french people, it is a sign of ...

on the French people and for the attraction of tourists.
*The Eiffel Tower is an excellent viewpoint, to get the whole city of Paris under your eyes, and it is
a great spot for observation.
*The tower saves a lot of land space.
Disadvantage
*Because the tower is very high and famous, it became a very popular place for people to commit
suicide, approximately more than 350 people jumped off from Eiffel Tower and died. So safety is
one of the major disadvantages of The Eiffel Tower.
*The cost is often much higher to build a tower rather than a lower structure, and requires more
people and money to clean or repair from high.
2.5 Interesting facts about the Eiffle Tower
Thomas Edison visited the tower in September 1889 and left a message of congratulations for "M
Eiffel".
In February 1912 Austrian Franz Reichelt attempted to jump off the first floor of the tower using his
home–made parachute to glide to the ground. Unfortunately during the 60 m drop his parachute
failed to open and he died on impact.
Between 1925 and 1934, three sides of the Tower accommodated advertising space for Citroen
which made it the world's tallest advertising structure at the time.
The Eiffel Tower has featured heavily in at least two James Bond movies, although there have been

Paris Dreams By Charles Rearick: Summary
In Charles Rearick's book, Paris Dreams, Paris Memories, he describes the various ways in which
Paris is "represented" through various images he identifies as the City of Light, Old Paris, the
Capital of Pleasures, and Paname. Rearick further writes how and why these images of Paris came
of importance and how they shaped the geographical layout of the city we know today. All of these
images together have likewise produced the city of Paris while also providing the framework of
Parisian events and experiences. Paris as the City of Light, or the "modern" Paris, emerged in the
mid 19th century as the demolition of "Old Paris" by Prefect Haussmann paved the way for the
urban renewal program set out by the Emperor Napoleon III. New streets, sewers, and parks, and
new town halls, hospitals, and schools were all created at this time. Not all were admired though. In
fact, some Parisians grew angry that the historic core of Paris was lost in these bold projects. Lights
throughout Paris evolved over the 19th century as well. Candle–lit lanterns that once lit the city
became oil–burning lamps. It wasn't until the year 1900 that Paris was illuminated by electric
lighting, and formally became known as "Ville Lumière." Main monumental spaces such as the
Palais de l'Électricité, the Eiffel Tower, and even the new central wide boulevards were illuminated
with these lights. Paris displayed the pleasures of the city to visitors who came to experience it,
however, it also divided Parisians on the basis that the city's traditions and memories were
destroyed. Despite being called the most cosmopolitan city in the world by Baedeker, its history left
out the dark side of it all. Paris was desolated of its historic memories and its traditional morals.
However, renovations did bring sunlight and air into the historically beloved unhealthy, cramped
streets. Ultimately, this image of Paris is all about its visually appealing aesthetics and does not
mention what a true Parisian, in the center–periphery or banlieues, for example, would vision. "Old
Paris" was viewed as a collection of picturesque memories, cherished dwellings, close
neighborhoods, and lively streets. The people inhabiting "Old Paris" included those in the banlieues

The Paris Commune 1871

HIS 102–W08
March 31, 2013
The Paris Commune 1871 One of the most inspiring and greatest events for the working class in
history is The Paris Commune of 1871. In March of 1871, the citizens of Paris declined the
authority of the French government. The working class people were able to replace the state
government with their own branch of government and held power until their decline. Causes of the
Communes origins lie in the Franco–Prussian War as well as the siege of Paris. During this time,
people were experiencing intense isolation from France and uproar of patriotism which caused
socialist aspects to come about among the lower class Parisians. With the defeat of France and the
end of the siege, people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since this rejection of power was done openly, Thiers called an immediate evacuation of
government from Paris. The army and many of the bureaucracy left the city and went to Versailles.
Citizens now had control of Paris. The newly formed Central Committee of the National Guard
came out as the main authority during the government's swift retreat. The immediate concern of the
committee was to have municipal elections and move power to the Commune as quickly as possible.
On March 26, the elections brought a Paris Commune that was to the left of the Assembly at
Versailles. Many of the districts elected officials that were in opposition of the government. Of the
ninety one representatives, thirty five were manual laborers, mostly craftsmen in little workshops.
Members of the Commune had little to no experience politically. They often rambled during their
debates which caused many matters to be dropped rather than addressed (Magraw 88). Politically,
the Commune had no direction. This was a very important aspect because it was needed in order to
win a civil war. One of the Commune's most effective measures was to do away with payment of
rent that accumulated over the course of the siege. For lower classes, this was a big relief and helped
to get more support for the Commune. However, actions such as this were very rare. With no
apparent leader, the Commune was always shifting different

Similarities Between Paris And Gauls
Both Paris which is the capital city of France and Barcelona which is the capital and the most
famous town of Catalonia have similarities with their rebellious history and their historic revolution.
The similarities are reflected on the grounds of the cause for rebellion and the phases they
underwent during the revolution period . The associated similarities for resistance in both cities were
economic problems and the cultural differences of the population in the towns. Both financial issues
and cultural differences influenced the residents to need for the insurgency. On the side of the
revolution, it encompassed a social and political change in both cities1. The essay focuses on the
historical rebellion similarities between Paris and Barcelona.
From the general view of the history of Paris, the city is believed to be over 2000 years of age.
During the period between 250 and 200 BC, the tribe Gauls of Parisii settled in the town. The
general population of Gauls was financially unstable and had different cultural practices. During the
early Middle Ages of 52BC Julius Caesar conquered Paris and made it the regional existence of
Romans. The emergence of the Romans and the preexistence of the Gauls widened the disputes
cultural Gaps . The general population of both the Romans and the Gauls was vibrant and defiant
which made them a free cooperative under the authority of Etienne Marcel who was their chief
leader. The raging of the Bastille in 1789 was the first of a progression

Haussmann's Paris Essay
In the middle of Napoleon III's reign, the transformation of Paris began. He commissioned Baron
Georges–Eugene Haussmann to renovate the city between 1852 and 1870. Baron Haussmann
received a lot of criticism for his redesign of Paris and it unfortunately led to his downfall in 1870.
However should one see Haussmann as the saviour or destroyer of Paris?
Georges–Eugene Haussmann was born in Paris on the 27th of March 1809. He studied Law at the
College Henri IV located in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank. In 1831 he entered the French civil
service and became Prefect of the Seine on the 29th of June 1853. He was hand chosen to carry out
the social plans of Napoleon III, who wished to improve Paris after a trip to London inspired him. ...

There was also an amount of safety added to the city with the creation of these boulevards. Police
could defend against angry mobs easier on a straight road, rather than narrow, winding alleyways.
These boulevards also helped prevent the spread of disease, which Napoleon was adamant about
achieving. Along all these new roads, were rows of trees. These were planted to maintain the
symmetrical aesthetic that Haussmann loved. The aesthetic improvements of Paris would have been
recognized on an international scale, which in turn would improve France's standing within the
global community, attracting trade from all over. The introduction of new train stations (Gare du
Nord and Gare du Lyon) in the city centre aided this and also provided easy access to Haussmann's
newly created boulevards. This linked the rest of France with the capital, and allowed Parisians to
easily take day trips into the countryside. This would also increase the level of commerce practiced
in the city, improving the economy.
Not only did Haussmann create new buildings, he unified the city by making them all appear the
same. There was a certain style that all of Haussmann's buildings had to posses. Haussmann created
many new apartment buildings, to provide living space for the ever–growing population. The
facades were built using large blocks of stone, and were five stories high, just like every new

the Notre –dame de Paris. I yearn to see for myself these great works of art. Paris is also a shopping
heaven; there are different famous brands and luxury brands in different department stores. Parisians

understand how to transform their ideals about life into art, make them into music or other artistic

Paris Fashion: The Golden Age Of Fashion
1947 to 1957, has been described by some as the golden age of couture. Celebrating the end of war
and the birth of a new era, it was a new beginning in the fashion world. By the late 1940s and early
1950s, designers were tired of the utilitarian, minimalist clothing of the wartime era. Paris fashion,
which had fallen from its position as the capital of the fashion world after World War II, made a
strong comeback after the war in part due to international success of couturiers Christian Dior and
Gabrielle Chanel.
Both Dior's and Chanel's collection looked back at what they perceived to be a lost femininity.
Dior's 'New Look' and Chanel's simple, straight suits were the factors in helping Paris regained its
title as the world fashion capital.

Social Destruction Of Medieval Paris
This historical study will define the gentrification and social disruption of medieval Paris in the
modern urban design of Georges–Eugene Haussmann's renovation of Paris in the 19th century.
Haussmann's urban design was founded on the revolutionary leadership of Emperor Louis–
Napoleon Bonaparte III in the late 1840s to renovate the massive slums and overcrowded tenements
of Paris. The modernity of this massive urban project was founded on making wider streets,
demolishing slums, and providing better sewage for an ever–increasing population. The destruction
of the "medieval" structure of Paris was extremely influential in the design of the modern European
city, yet it also brought about the problem of gentrification that alienated and marginalized ... Show

This type of urban developmental trend became a beacon for other European cities, which also
sought to demolish slums as a threat to the middle and upper class sections of urban neighborhoods
that were considered an eyesore on a national and international scale. In the 1860s, Haussmann
relied heavily on destroying the inhabitants of the working poor in order to achieve space for the
overall city's population, but this was far easier to do than threatening the real estate value of more
wealthy building owners and real estate owners of the middle and upper classes that got in the way
of Haussmann's development project. Certainly, some wealthy landowners in Paris had to submit to
Napoleon III's edicts for urban renovation, but these negotiations would involve far more beneficial
results in contrast to the displacement of the lower classes during this historical period. More so,
gentrification of the old medieval slums would be one such way in which the appeasement of
wealthy landowners and real estate moguls could be recompensated for the losses they incurred
under Haussmann's "surgical" demolition of the slums in the interior of the

All the people are well dressed and bear the markings of the wealthier echelons of society. Perhaps
when the painter decided to capture the street such habitants of society just happened to be going
about their days. Or perhaps on this street, real or imagined, one would usually only find this type of
social class. However, either way in reality due to the public works reconstruction it would have
been more common for certain districts and neighborhoods to become more hegemonic looking and
distinct in relation to one another. Haussmann's simplifications caused more segregation of class and
function. Different parts of the city increasingly formed distinctive characters of dress, function, and
wealth. Another motive for the reconstruction was to break up some of the poor and insurrectionary
neighborhoods. Many were displaced and concentrated into a quarter on the periphery of the city,
which became a close community tied by common resentments and shared experiences. This
hegemony illustrates how class and function influence the physical evolution certain parts of cities
that perpetuate the differences and distinctive forms that are even present

Introduction
Joan Dejean wrote the book "How Paris Became Paris: The Invention of Modern City". In the book,
the author describes the century–long transformation of Paris from a medieval center to the modern
city, which is recognized today, elaborating how the Parisian urban model was actually invented in
the 17th century, when leaders tore down fortifications, and created public parks and constructed
streets and bridges. In the book, the author argues that Paris has been a modern city far longer that it
is usually thought of. In addition, the author builds her arguments for the 17th century origins of
modern Paris piece by piece and unravelling the stories on how the city's architectural ... Show more

were ideal for socializing. However, the bridge has two different bridge spans with one span of
seven arches joining the right bank and the other span of five arches connecting Île de la Cité with
the left bank. The bridge is universal in appeal, but the problem is that it has raised heated questions
concerning the use of public space. In addition, the site installations offers the viewer with different
visual experience, which transforms and transcends various expectations so that landmarks are
viewed as art objects instead of mere tourist destinations. Today, the bridge is still standing as Paris'
oldest bridge and takes the central part in Parisian culture for centuries. In addition, the signatures
and decorations on the bridge signify a symbol of unity to the people. The construction of the bridge
is continuous because over time each stone and arch has been replaced and preserved by many
generations. Today, the bridge is still used as a prime source of transportation and invites the people
to socialize and interact with it regularly as pedestrians, commuters, as site

Chapter One Of Paris France
Chapter One
Paris France, 1888 Darkness. As Robin Cahun awoke from his slumber, that's all he felt...darkness.
As he opened his eyes, he saw the morning light flowing through the drawn curtains and wondered
just how long he had been out of it? Where was he? How did he get here? As he pulled the covers
off of his naked body, he couldn't remember anything about the night before. What was even more
frightening was that he could remember anything from the last week. The last thing Robin could
recall was walking past the construction site of the controversial Eiffel Tower on his way to his
apartment, and that was a week ago. Had he drunk that much that he couldn't remember anything?
He never drank that much. Yet, as he swung his legs out of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

At the young age of 30, he kept his body in perfect shape. His 6 foot, 2 inch frame was as lean as the
day he graduated Secondary School at age 16. And just like it did then, his jet black hair and light
hazel eyes still pulled the attraction of any woman he came into contact with. After finally stumbling
into the bathroom, he pulled himself closer to the mirror over the sink trying to see the cause of the
blood on his neck. After wiping his neck with a wet cloth, he seen the cause clearly; two holes,
almost an inch apart from each other, were perfectly placed on the side of his neck. What the hell
happened last night?

Robin shook himself out of the memory. Looking out his penthouse suite window over modern day
Paris, the Eiffel Tower now fully completed, the memory of that dreaded day came flooding back to
his mind. No, he still couldn't remember anything from that night. Nor could he remember who it
was that put this curse on him. All he knew was that day was the beginning of his torment of
immortality. That day, he became a creature of folklore shown only in scary movies and spoken of
only in secret; that day he became a vampire. One day, he vowed to himself, he would find out who
it was that put this curse on him. Sure, some days, it was nice to know that death would never find
you. However, most days it was only torture. He could never love anyone anymore. Not for 100

VELIB, PARIS Essay
1. Introduction
Nowadays, transportation in urban area is highly complex as it involved various modes of
transportation, locations of the origins and destination and also the population of that particular
urban area. The focus of urban transport has been more on passengers as many major cities were
viewed as locations of utmost human interactions. Mostly, they move from one place to other place
for the purpose of commuting, commercial transactions, leisure or for cultural activities. Beside,
urban passenger transport system is one of the medium helping to have better quality of life for
every living community. It provides personal mobility and freedom for people to walk, use para–

Naturally, as with every innovation, it will take to adapt and I have to emphasis that the rules must
be respected where necessary to ensure the safety of everyone, especially the most vuinerable
among us, pedestrians and cyclist!"
Bertrand Delanoe, Mayor of Paris.
(Quoted shortly after the inauguration of the Vélib system, July 2007.)
According to his inauguration, the Vélib system appoints the need of both personalized and mobility
and low carbon solutions for urban transport passenger system. The main modal for this system is to
provide low environments that reduce the impact of mobility service for large cities and urban
centers. For this application, Vélib use Cyclocity as the basic ideas to be user friendly as possible.
The main components of the system are the bike, the stations where they are attached and the
software that can track the bikes journey and the rental time of each journey made. One of the
common rationales cited by bike programs is that they provide an effective substitute for at least
some of the large numbers of short distance trips made by cars in urban areas, often with only one
person in the car. Such trips make poor use of scarce public resources, and of course carry with them
a heavy environmental burden.
If many passengers tend to use private vehicle, this objective cannot be achieved. However Paris has
been established as one of the country that

Paris : A City Full Of Riches
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Paris is a city for the senses. Not only has
it captured the imaginations of romantics the world over, it is a city of art and culture. Tourists flock
to this city on the Seine to partake of a life rich in all the things Paris represents. Whether sitting in a
cafe or floating down the Seine, Paris is an adventure that few can forget.
There are so many things to see and do while visiting Paris, yet these top ten items surely reflect the
best of what is surely a city full of riches.
One – Arc de Triomphe
Located on the most famous street in Paris, the Champs–Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe was built by
Napoleon in 1806 in honor of his victories in war. The largest arch in the world, the Arc de
Triomphe has been the location of solemn occasions, both of French state funerals and, most
notably, when the Germans took Paris in World War II. Yet, like Napoleon, it was also the spot
where victories reign, and the French marched victoriously beneath the arch after having been
liberated at the end of World War II. This is also the site for France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Two – Basilica du Sacre–Coeur
Built as a tribute to the Franco–Prussian War of 1870, the cathedral was constructed between 1987–
1914 from a design by Paul Abadie. Its luminous white façade, huge dome of more than 200 feet,
and Byzantine style make it an unusual church, even for Paris. So elaborate is its gingerbread façade
that it looks like it belongs

Disneyland Paris
International Marketing Final Exam
First Question:
Disneyland Paris was one of Disneyland 's Global projects. Please discuss its advantages and
disadvantages, and from reading and understanding the case suggest what was/were the mistake/s
that Disney committed from the beginning till now.
Answer:
Advantages: 1– New site serving the 67millions population in France and 79 millions of tourists
there, as Paris is the most–popular city destination among tourists of all nationalities. 2– 310 million
people in Europe live within two hours' air travel of EuroDisney, and 17 million could reach the

Disney management expected some 50% of park attendance to include French visitors. The French
people in general proved to be reluctant in their response to this example of "Americana" in Europe.
EuroDisney's management seriously underestimated negative attitudes among the French. Visitors
of other nationalities were also unwilling to pay the high prices of EuroDisney or to stay more than
one or two days (instead of the expected three days). Clearly, perceptions of the park's benefits
among tourists differed from those of the American. 3– Real–estate investments. 4– Expensive or
inappropriate park design and construction. Total park construction costs were estimated at FFr 14
billion ($2.37 billion) in 1989 but rose by $340 million to FFr 16 billion as a result of all these add–
ons. Hotel construction costs alone rose from an estimated FFr 3.4 billion to FFr 5.7 billion. 5–
Flawed initial marketing, pricing, staffing, and park management policies. 6– Disney's management
decision to pursue a market skimming policy to earn a fast return, might have led to poor attendance
levels. 7– Disney's management was being insensitive to cultural differences, as Europeans are
much more independent and value deeply their own cultural habits and traditions. This would
require the design of a theme park that is more in keeping with French and European cultural norms.

Our Journey through the City of Paris at Night
Paris is a beautiful city during the day, but at night, it changes. The first thing that is seen are all the
lights from the shops, buildings and streetlights. These lights brighten up Paris and give it a different
but just as beautiful perspective at night. The Eiffel Tower, one of the top attractions in Paris that
tourists come to see can be described as an iron, lace work of art, and the most recognized structure
in the world, and at night with the glow of its lights, it stands out like a guiding lighthouse. We could
see this beautiful tower wherever we stood day or night. My choir group was invited to sing in some
of the cathedrals in Paris. One night after we had a concert and had dinner, our tour guide gave us an
option of either staying on the bus or getting off and taking a tour down the Seine River to see the
Eiffel Tower at night. If we should choose this option, we needed to find a different way back to the
hotel as the bus driver was not going to come back for us. My family and a few others chose to take
the tour down the river. On the boat, we could see different buildings, museums and the Eiffel
Tower. On the tour, we also passed under the famous bridges in Paris. Two of the buildings I
remember viewing were the Louvre, and Norte Dame. From the boat, I could also see the Louvre
pyramid which sits in the courtyard of the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Pyramid is a large glass and
metal pyramid, surrounded by three smaller pyramids. The

Paris The Capital of France
When you hear the name "Paris" we generally think about the illustrious landmarks and acclaimed
artwork. The landmarks being the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre however; the Eiffel Tower and the
Louvre are only the beginning of the omnifarious landmarks Paris has to offer. Paris' culture and
notorious landmarks combined with tourist attractions, give Paris just the right touch of class and
luster. The Eiffel Tower standing 1,063 ft. tall has certainly earned its name as "The Iron Lady".
(http://www.livescience.com/29391–eiffel–tower.html) Built by Gustave Eiffel, the tower was meant
to be taken down 20 years after it was built. Eiffel didn't like the idea of his hard work being for
nothing therefore; he made the tower a meteorology station. In 1910, Paris renewed Eiffel's
concession because of the tower's usefulness as a wireless telegraph transmitter, to communicate
wirelessly with ships in the Atlantic Ocean and intercept enemy messages during World War I.
Today the tower is used to transmit radio and television signals throughout the "City of Love" The
notorious Louvre has several apparent attributes but; I have found several things that will make you
strive to dig deeper into this amazing museum. The Louvre began as a fortress. King Phillip, in the
late 12th century, began the marvelous structure as a defense post with a moat! Today the 12th
century architecture can still be seen in the lower hall. Charles V planned to renovate the building
later in the 14th century.

Analysis : The Belly Of Paris
The environment in which people live in demonstrates the societal norms and values of said culture.
In Émile Zola's The Belly of Paris, Florent, a political outcast, returns to Paris only to find that the
regime has drastically changed. Napoleon III, a self–elected emperor, has torn down many of the
streets of Old Paris to make room for the angular and orderly streets of New Paris as well as the new
markets of Les Halles. Throughout the novel, the character's lives revolve around the various
markets in Les Halles and the streets of Paris. Zola uses descriptions of architecture and city
planning as well as how people use space within Paris to demonstrate the city's corruption,
signifying that the architecture of a city is a reflection of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The buildings do not literally look like the stomachs of women, but instead the architecture is a
reflection of those who live within the city. The comparison of dancing–girls and fat women to the
city draws attention to the status of Parisians that the city reflects. Zola implies that the city is a
corrupting force because it reflects the same thirst for riches, attention, and power that the regime
has. Kenneth Cornell argues that "Paris the monster is [Zola's] constant image" (Kenneth Cornell).
Zola uses his arguments to describe the corruption of the people within Paris and thus demonize the
city further his goal of exposing the true nature of the regime. Zola achieves his goal of labeling
Paris as a monster. He states that the old buildings in Paris still represent complying and supporting
the regime, and thus supporting the government because they support the people. He claims that the
city has always been corruptive. Essentially, Zola uses the existing architecture of the city to further
enhance the image he is painting. Likewise, the church of St. Eustache is a representation of the
corruption within the society in Paris, demonstrating Zola's depiction of the political state of the city.
When walking around Les Halles and Saint Eustache with Florent, Claude argues, "I don't think it
was some chance need for symmetry that put one of the rose windows of Saint–Eustache right in the

My Family At Paris France
Image Analysis When I was in 6th grade my family went on a trip to Paris France. While there we
were able to explore the city and visit many well–known places such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre
and a royal palace called Versailles. The Versailles was originally built by a Louis XIII in 1623 as a
hunting lodge. In the years to come the building went through a few big expansions. After Louis
XIII died his son Louis XIV obtained Versailles and used it as his main residence and for the seat of
the government of the Kingdom of France. Also, the Versailles had enough rooms to be used for
most of the courtiers to stay there. My family and I were able to take a tour of the palace. While I
was on the tour we came into a room known as the Hercules Room. I walked in the room as was
shocked because of a sculpture in the middle of the room. Displayed in the middle of this room in an
immaculate ancient palace was an enormous metal sculpture of a dog shaped balloon animal.
Directly above the dog was a massive painting covering the ceiling named Apotheosis of Hercules
which was the reason the room itself was named Hercules Room. The reason I was surprised when I
walked into the room was because the dog balloon sculpture was extremely different than the ceiling
above it and everything surrounding it making it seem out of place. The Balloon Dog sculpture was
created by a man named Jeff Koons in 1994. The dog is an optimistic piece, it's similar to a balloon

The wonderful world of Disney is alive and well all over the world, in the United States, China,

Unlike Americans who were known grazers, Parisians were less likely to eat in the same fashion,
with most places closing down earlier, leaving many without better food options, and still sans their

blending of American and French pairing, which did not quite work. It was not just about the
marketing and cultural issues, finically they were struggling from the beginning, after the first
financial bailout and restructuring, another would soon follow. (Grant, 2003) Another park, Walt
Disney Studios was opened in hopes of bringing in more guests, however, yet again, failing to
utilize any contingency plans or measures in case it was not very lucrative, it was discovered that the
cost of running two different attractions was too expensive. Without the projected attendance and
revenue, it was time for another bailout and restructuring. This time in the amount of 250 million

The Louvre was not founded as a museum, and the road to attaining today's program expanded
across six centuries of monarchies, wars, treaties, and revolution. Dating far back to the 12th century
as a fortress for King Phillip II, the Louvre laid foundations with protective walls, and underground
crypts to function not as a gallery for the public, but rather a stronghold for the private. As the
decades turned, the old Louvre acclimated to the needs of the monarchies, undergoing usage as both
a stronghold and a retreat, but entirely defense–based nonetheless (Deitz). Two centuries passed
when Charles V altered the program from a bulwark of protection, changing it into a residency. Here
the program shifted towards a notion of more public structure. Several French kings after, Francis I
decorated the bulky fortress with a French renaissance style, further changing the Louvre's
appearance and adapting the architecture to the art style of the time. This move would be seen again
in I. M. Pei's controversial addition. Under King Henry IV, the Louvre underwent reconstruction
(Kostof). During the rise of Versailles, artisans resided within the Louvre's halls, giving way to the
notion of an art influenced program for the building

Descriptive Essay About Paris
Paris is like no other place on earth, its beauty is indescribable, the amount of famous structures is
astounding, and is attraction draws many tourists there every year. My experience touring Paris will
always be on of my favorite memories. Everywhere I looked, it was as if I was in a dream. There
was so much elegance in such simple structures it seemed unrealistic. Wherever I went, it seemed as

It all started with the most exhilarating train ride ever. It was about four hours long, and we were
going so fast that the world around me seemed non–existent. The trees were whizzing by so quick
that I could hardly see what color they were. The food that was served melted in my mouth making
me want more with every bite. Although I never wanted the train to stop, nothing could ever
compare to what was awaiting my family and I when we stepped off the train. The aroma of the
different types of food from a variety of places coming together to make my mouth water. Seeing
the bustling streets of Paris filled with people as amazed as we were trying to take in the scenery
that was so vast, it seemed like years before we could visit it all. I was so excited to see what
awaited us in the days to come.
Our first stop was the Eiffel Tower, standing next to such an amazing piece of art was a privilege as
well as intimidating. The Eiffel Tower is 1,063 feet tall making everything else around it seem

Paris And Helen And The Relationship Between Hector And...
A Comparison of the Relationship between Paris and Helen and the Relationship between Hector
and Andromache
The relationship between Paris and Helen differs greatly from the relationship between Hector and
Andromache. These differences are most evident in books three and six. A major difference between
the two relationships is whether or not an outside force is pushing the relationship. In book three
lines 486 to 489, Aphrodite forces Helen to go back to the bedroom with Paris. Initially, Helen does
not want to go stating that it would be "disgraceful to share that coward's bed once more" (, 476).
Helen very clearly does not want to go back and be with Paris, but cannot go against Aphrodite's
wishes which is shown as "she [goes] along, in silence" (, 488). Hector, on the other hand, makes the
choice to go back and see his wife in book six. Unlike Helen going along is silence, Andromache
"came running up to meet him" (V, 466). Andromache's eagerness, as shown by her running,
supports the idea that her relationship with Hector is not forced. This is a huge difference from
Helen's reluctance of being with Paris due to it being forced by Aphrodite. There is also a huge
difference between the relationships in whether or not one wishes their partner were dead. In book
three, when Helen sees Paris back to the war she is disgusted to see him back and not fighting as
shown by her saying, "Oh would to god you'd died there, brought down by that great soldier, my
husband long ago" (, 500–501). Not only does she say she wishes he would've died she also brings
up that her previous husband, Menelaus, would have killed him. Later, in line 510, she reiterates a
similar statement saying that Menelaus would impale Paris with his spear. Helen's wishes of
Menelaus killing Paris is a sharp contrast to how Andromache reacts after Hector returns home.
Andromache begs Hector to stay with her and pleads in book 6 line 511 to think about how her son
will be an orphan and she will be a widow if he dies. Even the thought of Hector dying and leaving
her alone made her act "like a madwoman" (V, 460). Andromache differs greatly from Helen here in
the way that she so desperately wants Hector to live while Helen seemingly wants Paris dead.

The Attraction to Paris
Millions and millions of people from all around the world come to visit France every year. The most
popular city to visit in France is Paris. So many people visit Paris, but each of them have different
reasons for visiting. Some people come to see the major landmarks and attractions. Others come to
see the numerous art galleries. The food in Paris draws in tourists all by itself. There are many
reasons to visit Paris. Probably the most popular reason to visit Paris is to see all of the most famed
monuments. The Eiffel Tower is the unmistakable icon of Paris. Gustave Eiffel designed the tower
for the World Expo of 1889. Back then, Eiffel was an engineer who designed iron bridges for trains.
He employed the same kind of structural elements when designing the Eiffel Tower, most notably
the iron crossbars and massive archways. Another monumental landmark is the Arc de Triomphe.
Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe in 1806, as a monument to the success of his imperial
armies, and it wasn't finished until 1836. The design for the arch was based on the Arch of Titus in
Rome, which is 50 feet tall, but the architect scaled the Arc de Triomphe to three times that size at
156 feet tall. Tourists can climb stairs to the roof, or ride in an elevator. The Notre Dame is a popular
place to visit as well. It is the finest example of Gothic architecture in Paris. The original towers are

Analysis Of Paris Is Burning
COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE
Ava Morrow
History 3220
The United States in the 20th Century
November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid–1980's, a number of efforts were initiated to bring
awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these
awareness campaigns were the documentaries "Paris Is Burning" and "How to Survive a Plague" .
Both films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles
of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two
documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of
acceptance or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles.
The movie "Paris Is Burning" is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the
African–American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in
the mid–to–late 1980's. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub–culture of LGBT
people who "walk" or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the
ostentatiously–arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk
while being judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing
ability. Much of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent
members of this drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied
methods of expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty,
and homophobia.
"How to Survive a Plague" is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS
epidemic and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an
advocacy group which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS–victims.
The film used archived footage of news coverage, interviews, protests, meetings, and conferences to
chronicle the struggles of AIDS activists from the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York
City. It focused on the efforts of these activists to obtain meaningful responses from medical

Medieval Paris : The Mischiefs Of Paris
The mischiefs of Paris
When people think about Medieval Paris, they tend to think about the important aspects it brought
into this wonderful city. The positive aspects of Paris were the new growth to the city. There were
more Christian churches built, such as Notre Dame and Sainte– Chapelle. While a new University
was constructed to bring new life to Paris. People were able to be educated and be religious without
being held back from limitation or distances. There were many goods that were sold and had a lot of
businesses throughout the city. With everything going smoothly occurring at the beginning of Paris,
everyone in France or even throughout Europe wanted to be a part of a wonderful environment. This
cause an increase in population throughout the city of Paris. During the middle portion of the
Medieval times, it started to get rocky and people began to get frustrated with the way the
government was controlling the city. There were few jobs that 'normal' people could have because of
the increase in educated students taking them first. After a while, people who did not have a job
become homeless. There were also more taxes for people that were not Parisians, which caused
more people from out of the city to pay more than the people that were from Paris. Paris started to
suffer from poverty issues and people would start to become homeless because of the taxes and no
jobs. Crimes, started to occur in Paris from either hate from the government, wanting money, or

guide about who's were Rodin's wife and who's were the lover. They do not mention any detail
about the sculpture even the bronze's name is not said, Paul is just making flat and not trustful
remarks but Inez says that Paul is a very educated man and she seems to be fascinated by him. In his
turns Gil claims that Paul is not correct in the information about who were the wife and lover of
Rodin and to support his affirmation Gil says that he had read a Rodin's biography in two volumes.
In an ironic way Gil makes clear to Inez that he does not read Rodin's biography, so they just need to

Summary Of Paris Paris Journey Into The City Of Light By...
After reading the book Paris, Paris, Journey into the City of Light, by David Downie, the vision that
I have created in my mind was very different from Downie's perspective. It made me realized that
the city of Paris has come a long way since the Revolutionary War to be the city it is today. Many of
us thinks that Paris is this beautiful city that is full of lights, luxurious brands, and tourist attractions.
However, we don't fully acknowledge the history and knowing why it is the way it is today. And by
reading this book, it gives travelers a little background information and a little more appreciation to
each of the sites that are mentioned.
One particular chapter that has captured my attention was "Sidewalk Sundae: What makes Paris
Paris." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That was silly of me. I found the history of Coco Chanel was amazing. She was just an ordinary
lady that didn't have anything to creating a brand that is well–known today. In the chapter, Downie
mentioned Coco was a social outcast from the provinces and came to rule Paris society and "almost
single–handedly revolutionized the way women around the world dressed, smelled, and behaved"
(Downie, 112). Throughout the chapter, Downie described Chanel's history, her love life, and how
she had become a celebrity during her time. During Chanel's life, she has gone through quite a few
boyfriends. Each one of them helped her advanced in her career. For example, Étienne Balsan, he
was Chanel's first famous lover. He had offered finance for Coco. Although it was Balsan that got
her out of poverty, but it was Boy Capel who gave her happiness, one who understood her passion
and thirst for freedom. However, they only remained as friends and lover, never a wife. After,
Chanel's life began to flourish. From making hats for society ladies and irrégulières, unmarriable
women to the birth of Chanel No. 5 (perfume), and finally the iconic handbags, one which she
named "Boy" as one of her collections. I want to visit her original boutique at Rue Cambon shop.
The history of Coco Chanel was fascinating and learning how her

Notre Dame De Paris Research Paper
Even after 850 years, the Notre Dame de Paris is still an awe inspiring Cathedral. Notre Dame de
Paris is a Catholic Cathedral located next to the Seine river in Paris. It has remarkable gothic
architecture, and dozens of important relics are held inside. Notre Dame is a famous Cathedral
because of its breathtaking exterior, stunning interior design, and unique history.
The exterior of Notre Dame is remarkably detailed. On top of the Cathedrals are gargoyles.
Gargoyles are fundamental parts of the Cathedral. Their terrifying features are are used to ward off
any evil or devilish spirits. They are pointing down towards the ground (Frey 43). Their terrifying
faces scare the civilians into entering the cathedral. During its time Notre Dame was one of the
tallest buildings. From the ground up, it is 266 ft tall (aviewoncities). The Cathedral could be ...

Notre dame was constructed by many people; Pierre de Montreauil, Jean de Chelles, Jean Baptise,
Antonie Lassus, Raymond du temple, Jean le Bout Eiller and Jean Ravy. Each one helped construct
the architecutre of Notre dame. (Ermengem). Since many people continued the work of Notre Dame
throughout the 200 years, it shows the determination and passion that these architect's had. Notre
Dame became very famous due to the attention it received. 29 french kings all had their coronations
at Notre Dame. (Clark, 85–115). The reason why 29 kings had their coronations there was because
of the beauty, and importance of this Cathedral. Finally, the Cathedral helped many people find a
way to survive. Citizens benefited from the Cathedrals to help them in their daily life. Merchants set
up shops since many people visited. Civilians acquired jobs from it, such as a priest, and it assisted
the youth with education. (Grant, 73). The Cathedral not only served a spiritual purpose, but also
increased commerce. Due to its interesting history, Notre Dame is remembered as an important

Analysis Of Midnight In Paris
The comedy– romance movie "Midnight in Paris", directed and written by Woody Allen, portrays a
story of a nostalgic writer on his vacation with his wife in the beautiful city of Paris. The character,
played by actor Owen Wilson, is a successful writer from Hollywood having major setbacks in his
current working novel. Gil has deep feelings to the remarkable and beautiful feature of the city. He
takes a car on midnight to the adventures 1920s that he claims he will get inspiration. There he
meets all the people that are legendary poets, artists, and writers. However, the theme of the movie
has some confusing misdirection than the way Allen wants to interpret his work. Moreover, the
movies lightning and cinematographic effects contribute to the confusion. The movie starts with
cinematics of the attractive and eye–catching views of the city and this camera angle effect also
takes place at night time of the time travel scenes. However, the lightning effects in the 2010 scenes
are more warn and bright. In the 1920's the lighting scenes are dim lights that come from the old
street lights. The movie is basically revolving around the city where one introspective writer's
fantasy comes to life so the lightning indicates that the difference in historical nostalgia and his
fantasy. The background music is always some French classical music, whatever period the scenes
in the movie. That indicates the relating aspects between Gil and his longing of the past. The

What Is The Mood Of The Judgement Of Paris

  • 1. What Is The Mood Of The Judgement Of Paris he Judgement of Paris tells the story of Edouard Manet, Ernest Meissonier, and an artistic revolution that brought the world Impressionism. Ross King contrasts the lives and artistic struggles of the two painters against the backdrop of the artistic center of the world, Paris. The Judgement of Paris presents the careers of the two protagonists to symbolize the old and the new, the archaic and modern and how the two are received by the critics of the Salon. Meissonier plays "the most famous and successful painter of the nineteenth century," while Manet "heralded the most radical change in the history of art since the Renaissance." The Salon was the official art exhibition of the Academie des Beaux–Arts in Paris, in the nineteenth century. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is ironic that Meissonier played such a large role in the story of the rise of Impressionism because he was known for his detailed and accurate history paintings. In the artistic revolution of Realism and Impressionism, Meissonier became identified with those who blocked these developments. The first chapter discusses how detailed his works are stating his "punctilious craftsmanship" and how even though his painting were small in size, they "rewarded the closest and most prolonged observation.". This is ironic because the other artists who are discussed were reprimanded for their controversial and noticeable mark–making. In the next chapter, Meissonier is compared to Manet: "Two years earlier a critic had praised Meissonier for painting his bonshommes so realistically that their lips appeared to move. Such mind–boggling manual dexterity and painstaking dedication to minutia were entirely absent from Manet's work. He applied his paint thickly and in broad brushstrokes, suppressing finer details such as the facial features of his reeling drunkard and taking instead a more abstract approach to visual ... • 5. Paris : The City Of Food Paris: The City of Food The country of France is an old one. Spanning into the early years of mankind. Part of the continent of Europe, located in the northeast of the globe. France is home to the history of food, wars, lifestyles, and many other things. In this old country stands the capital it calls its own: Paris; A popular tourist destination and the home of great cuisines and restaurants. Paris could be defined in its three characteristics: the history, the Eiffel tower, and its food scene. Many strive to understand the city of Paris and its inner workings. Myself included as I wish to understand the area of a place I strive to visit one day. And what best way to understand anything, then to start at its beginning. The story of Paris starts before the beginning of man's recorded time. Dating back to somewhere between 250 and 200 B.C. members of the Parisii tribe founded a village on an island by the river that would become Ile de Cite. (the center where Paris Developed). The villagers ran the village as sort of a fishing centric area. The area was not given an actual title until close to around 52 B.C. being called "Lutetia." Then soon after being conquered by Julius Caesar and the roman empire. The land existed as a regional center for Rome to be used at their disposal. This continued for centuries even through the early middle ages. Next, in the year 987, Hugh Capet, the Count of Paris at the time, ascended to power as the new King of France. Using his ... • 13. Homer's Relationship With Paris And Aphrodite Helen, the face that launched a thousand ships. In Homer's epic poem, Iliad, he describes Helen of Troy as the most beautiful woman in the world. The introduction of the Iliad states that when Paris steals Helen from her husband Menelaus, a Greek Chieftain, the Achaeans band together and cross the Aegean Sea to wage war against Troy, a gracious, prosperous city in Asia Minor. Their motive is revenge . After fighting for nine years in a land that is not their own, the Greeks miss "the rich fields and glorious feasts that supposedly make combat worth–while. Both sides have trouble remembering why they are fighting in the first place" Under the leadership of Menelaus's brother Agamemnon, the Greeks fight around Troy for ten years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In each of the three examples listed above the young women are beautiful, they are presented by their creators as vixens who use their siren ways to entice and entrap men into their seductive webs. Eventually each man falls victim to the seductress, living the rest of their days a ruined man. This is how it is presented to the audience, but is this what really happens? Like Helen, these three characters are in fact, victims of society and the men they seduce. Helen is the daughter of Zeus, prized for her beauty. Throughout the span of history she is that by which all female beauty is measured. Her beauty is not subjective but rather absolute. She is the only female in history who can rally an entire army's response and hold them in battle for over ten years just to bring her home. Her iconic image that spans all of history has been twisted into something very different than what was presented by Homer in the Iliad. Hellen is exploited by the men who worship her, and the gods that favor her. In order to fully understand the relationship between Paris and Helen, the reader must first understand the relationship between Paris and Aphrodite. Athena and Hera are on the side of the Greeks while Aphrodite favors the Trojans. This is because of a dispute between the three about who was most beautiful. Paris, who was judge in the beauty contest, chose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The topic I am going to write about is The Eiffel Tower in France about its structure, history etc. Because Eiffel Tower is a very significant man–made building at that time(1889) and still the most famous and recognizable tower people could think of in the world nowadays. 1.1 History and background of The Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, France, buildt in 1889 and it is 1063 feet tall. The reason of the name of the Eiffel Tower is because it was named after Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who was a famous civil engineer and architect. The tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris in memory of the centenary of the French Revolution. It means too much for the french people, it is a sign of ... Disadvantage *Because the tower is very high and famous, it became a very popular place for people to commit suicide, approximately more than 350 people jumped off from Eiffel Tower and died. So safety is one of the major disadvantages of The Eiffel Tower. *The cost is often much higher to build a tower rather than a lower structure, and requires more people and money to clean or repair from high. 2.5 Interesting facts about the Eiffle Tower Thomas Edison visited the tower in September 1889 and left a message of congratulations for "M Eiffel". In February 1912 Austrian Franz Reichelt attempted to jump off the first floor of the tower using his home–made parachute to glide to the ground. Unfortunately during the 60 m drop his parachute failed to open and he died on impact. Between 1925 and 1934, three sides of the Tower accommodated advertising space for Citroen which made it the world's tallest advertising structure at the time. • 21. • 25. Paris Dreams By Charles Rearick: Summary In Charles Rearick's book, Paris Dreams, Paris Memories, he describes the various ways in which Paris is "represented" through various images he identifies as the City of Light, Old Paris, the Capital of Pleasures, and Paname. Rearick further writes how and why these images of Paris came of importance and how they shaped the geographical layout of the city we know today. All of these images together have likewise produced the city of Paris while also providing the framework of Parisian events and experiences. Paris as the City of Light, or the "modern" Paris, emerged in the mid 19th century as the demolition of "Old Paris" by Prefect Haussmann paved the way for the urban renewal program set out by the Emperor Napoleon III. New streets, sewers, and parks, and new town halls, hospitals, and schools were all created at this time. Not all were admired though. In fact, some Parisians grew angry that the historic core of Paris was lost in these bold projects. Lights throughout Paris evolved over the 19th century as well. Candle–lit lanterns that once lit the city became oil–burning lamps. It wasn't until the year 1900 that Paris was illuminated by electric lighting, and formally became known as "Ville Lumière." Main monumental spaces such as the Palais de l'Électricité, the Eiffel Tower, and even the new central wide boulevards were illuminated with these lights. Paris displayed the pleasures of the city to visitors who came to experience it, however, it also divided Parisians on the basis that the city's traditions and memories were destroyed. Despite being called the most cosmopolitan city in the world by Baedeker, its history left out the dark side of it all. Paris was desolated of its historic memories and its traditional morals. However, renovations did bring sunlight and air into the historically beloved unhealthy, cramped streets. Ultimately, this image of Paris is all about its visually appealing aesthetics and does not mention what a true Parisian, in the center–periphery or banlieues, for example, would vision. "Old Paris" was viewed as a collection of picturesque memories, cherished dwellings, close neighborhoods, and lively streets. The people inhabiting "Old Paris" included those in the banlieues ... Crosby HIS 102–W08 March 31, 2013 The Paris Commune 1871 One of the most inspiring and greatest events for the working class in history is The Paris Commune of 1871. In March of 1871, the citizens of Paris declined the authority of the French government. The working class people were able to replace the state government with their own branch of government and held power until their decline. Causes of the Communes origins lie in the Franco–Prussian War as well as the siege of Paris. During this time, people were experiencing intense isolation from France and uproar of patriotism which caused socialist aspects to come about among the lower class Parisians. With the defeat of France and the end of the siege, people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since this rejection of power was done openly, Thiers called an immediate evacuation of government from Paris. The army and many of the bureaucracy left the city and went to Versailles. Citizens now had control of Paris. The newly formed Central Committee of the National Guard came out as the main authority during the government's swift retreat. The immediate concern of the committee was to have municipal elections and move power to the Commune as quickly as possible. On March 26, the elections brought a Paris Commune that was to the left of the Assembly at Versailles. Many of the districts elected officials that were in opposition of the government. Of the ninety one representatives, thirty five were manual laborers, mostly craftsmen in little workshops. Members of the Commune had little to no experience politically. They often rambled during their debates which caused many matters to be dropped rather than addressed (Magraw 88). Politically, the Commune had no direction. This was a very important aspect because it was needed in order to win a civil war. One of the Commune's most effective measures was to do away with payment of rent that accumulated over the course of the siege. For lower classes, this was a big relief and helped to get more support for the Commune. However, actions such as this were very rare. Similarities Between Paris And Gauls Both Paris which is the capital city of France and Barcelona which is the capital and the most famous town of Catalonia have similarities with their rebellious history and their historic revolution. The similarities are reflected on the grounds of the cause for rebellion and the phases they underwent during the revolution period . The associated similarities for resistance in both cities were economic problems and the cultural differences of the population in the towns. The essay focuses on the historical rebellion similarities between Paris and Barcelona. From the general view of the history of Paris, the city is believed to be over 2000 years of age. During the period between 250 and 200 BC, the tribe Gauls of Parisii settled in the town. The general population of Gauls was financially unstable and had different cultural practices. During the early Middle Ages of 52BC Julius Caesar conquered Paris and made it the regional existence of Romans. The emergence of the Romans and the preexistence of the Gauls widened the disputes cultural Gaps . Baron Haussmann received a lot of criticism for his redesign of Paris and it unfortunately led to his downfall in 1870. However should one see Haussmann as the saviour or destroyer of Paris? Georges–Eugene Haussmann was born in Paris on the 27th of March 1809. He studied Law at the College Henri IV located in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank. In 1831 he entered the French civil service and became Prefect of the Seine on the 29th of June 1853. There was also an amount of safety added to the city with the creation of these boulevards. Police could defend against angry mobs easier on a straight road, rather than narrow, winding alleyways. These boulevards also helped prevent the spread of disease, which Napoleon was adamant about achieving. Along all these new roads, were rows of trees. These were planted to maintain the symmetrical aesthetic that Haussmann loved. The aesthetic improvements of Paris would have been recognized on an international scale, which in turn would improve France's standing within the global community, attracting trade from all over. The introduction of new train stations (Gare du Nord and Gare du Lyon) in the city centre aided this and also provided easy access to Haussmann's newly created boulevards. This linked the rest of France with the capital, and allowed Parisians to easily take day trips into the countryside. This would also increase the level of commerce practiced in the city, improving the economy. Not only did Haussmann create new buildings, he unified the city by making them all appear the same. There was a certain style that all of Haussmann's buildings had to posses. Haussmann created many new apartment buildings, to provide living space for the ever–growing population. Celebrating the end of war and the birth of a new era, it was a new beginning in the fashion world. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, designers were tired of the utilitarian, minimalist clothing of the wartime era. Paris fashion, which had fallen from its position as the capital of the fashion world after World War II, made a strong comeback after the war in part due to international success of couturiers Christian Dior and Gabrielle Chanel. Both Dior's and Chanel's collection looked back at what they perceived to be a lost femininity. • 50. Social Destruction Of Medieval Paris This historical study will define the gentrification and social disruption of medieval Paris in the modern urban design of Georges–Eugene Haussmann's renovation of Paris in the 19th century. Haussmann's urban design was founded on the revolutionary leadership of Emperor Louis– Napoleon Bonaparte III in the late 1840s to renovate the massive slums and overcrowded tenements of Paris. The modernity of this massive urban project was founded on making wider streets, demolishing slums, and providing better sewage for an ever–increasing population. The destruction of the "medieval" structure of Paris was extremely influential in the design of the modern European city, yet it also brought about the problem of gentrification that alienated and marginalized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of urban developmental trend became a beacon for other European cities, which also sought to demolish slums as a threat to the middle and upper class sections of urban neighborhoods that were considered an eyesore on a national and international scale. In the 1860s, Haussmann relied heavily on destroying the inhabitants of the working poor in order to achieve space for the overall city's population, but this was far easier to do than threatening the real estate value of more wealthy building owners and real estate owners of the middle and upper classes that got in the way of Haussmann's development project. Certainly, some wealthy landowners in Paris had to submit to Napoleon III's edicts for urban renovation, but these negotiations would involve far more beneficial results in contrast to the displacement of the lower classes during this historical period. More so, gentrification of the old medieval slums would be one such way in which the appeasement of wealthy landowners and real estate moguls could be recompensated for the losses they incurred under Haussmann's "surgical" demolition of the slums in the interior of the ... However, either way in reality due to the public works reconstruction it would have been more common for certain districts and neighborhoods to become more hegemonic looking and distinct in relation to one another. Haussmann's simplifications caused more segregation of class and function. Different parts of the city increasingly formed distinctive characters of dress, function, and wealth. Another motive for the reconstruction was to break up some of the poor and insurrectionary neighborhoods. Many were displaced and concentrated into a quarter on the periphery of the city, which became a close community tied by common resentments and shared experiences. This hegemony illustrates how class and function influence the physical evolution certain parts of cities that perpetuate the differences and distinctive forms that are even present ... In the book, the author describes the century–long transformation of Paris from a medieval center to the modern city, which is recognized today, elaborating how the Parisian urban model was actually invented in the 17th century, when leaders tore down fortifications, and created public parks and constructed streets and bridges. In the book, the author argues that Paris has been a modern city far longer that it is usually thought of. The main components of the system are the bike, the stations where they are attached and the software that can track the bikes journey and the rental time of each journey made. One of the common rationales cited by bike programs is that they provide an effective substitute for at least some of the large numbers of short distance trips made by cars in urban areas, often with only one person in the car. Such trips make poor use of scarce public resources, and of course carry with them a heavy environmental burden. If many passengers tend to use private vehicle, this objective cannot be achieved. Yet, like Napoleon, it was also the spot where victories reign, and the French marched victoriously beneath the arch after having been liberated at the end of World War II. This is also the site for France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Two – Basilica du Sacre–Coeur Built as a tribute to the Franco–Prussian War of 1870, the cathedral was constructed between 1987– 1914 from a design by Paul Abadie. Its luminous white façade, huge dome of more than 200 feet, and Byzantine style make it an unusual church, even for Paris. So elaborate is its gingerbread façade that it looks like it belongs ... The French people in general proved to be reluctant in their response to this example of "Americana" in Europe. EuroDisney's management seriously underestimated negative attitudes among the French. Visitors of other nationalities were also unwilling to pay the high prices of EuroDisney or to stay more than one or two days (instead of the expected three days). Clearly, perceptions of the park's benefits among tourists differed from those of the American. 3– Real–estate investments. 4– Expensive or inappropriate park design and construction. Total park construction costs were estimated at FFr 14 billion ($2.37 billion) in 1989 but rose by $340 million to FFr 16 billion as a result of all these add– ons. Hotel construction costs alone rose from an estimated FFr 3.4 billion to FFr 5.7 billion. 5– Flawed initial marketing, pricing, staffing, and park management policies. 6– Disney's management decision to pursue a market skimming policy to earn a fast return, might have led to poor attendance levels. 7– Disney's management was being insensitive to cultural differences, as Europeans are much more independent and value deeply their own cultural habits and traditions. This would require the design of a theme park that is more in keeping with French and European cultural norms. Allow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first thing that is seen are all the lights from the shops, buildings and streetlights. These lights brighten up Paris and give it a different but just as beautiful perspective at night. The Eiffel Tower, one of the top attractions in Paris that tourists come to see can be described as an iron, lace work of art, and the most recognized structure in the world, and at night with the glow of its lights, it stands out like a guiding lighthouse. We could see this beautiful tower wherever we stood day or night. My choir group was invited to sing in some of the cathedrals in Paris. One night after we had a concert and had dinner, our tour guide gave us an option of either staying on the bus or getting off and taking a tour down the Seine River to see the Eiffel Tower at night. If we should choose this option, we needed to find a different way back to the hotel as the bus driver was not going to come back for us. My family and a few others chose to take the tour down the river. On the boat, we could see different buildings, museums and the Eiffel Tower. On the tour, we also passed under the famous bridges in Paris. Two of the buildings I remember viewing were the Louvre, and Norte Dame. From the boat, I could also see the Louvre pyramid which sits in the courtyard of the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Pyramid is a large glass and metal pyramid, surrounded by three smaller pyramids. Paris' culture and notorious landmarks combined with tourist attractions, give Paris just the right touch of class and luster. The Eiffel Tower standing 1,063 ft. tall has certainly earned its name as "The Iron Lady". Eiffel didn't like the idea of his hard work being for nothing therefore; he made the tower a meteorology station. In 1910, Paris renewed Eiffel's concession because of the tower's usefulness as a wireless telegraph transmitter, to communicate wirelessly with ships in the Atlantic Ocean and intercept enemy messages during World War I. Kenneth Cornell argues that "Paris the monster is [Zola's] constant image" (Kenneth Cornell). Zola uses his arguments to describe the corruption of the people within Paris and thus demonize the city further his goal of exposing the true nature of the regime. Zola achieves his goal of labeling Paris as a monster. He states that the old buildings in Paris still represent complying and supporting the regime, and thus supporting the government because they support the people. He claims that the city has always been corruptive. Essentially, Zola uses the existing architecture of the city to further enhance the image he is painting. Likewise, the church of St. Eustache is a representation of the corruption within the society in Paris, demonstrating Zola's depiction of the political state of the city. While there we were able to explore the city and visit many well–known places such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and a royal palace called Versailles. The Versailles was originally built by a Louis XIII in 1623 as a hunting lodge. In the years to come the building went through a few big expansions. After Louis XIII died his son Louis XIV obtained Versailles and used it as his main residence and for the seat of the government of the Kingdom of France. Also, the Versailles had enough rooms to be used for most of the courtiers to stay there. My family and I were able to take a tour of the palace. While I was on the tour we came into a room known as the Hercules Room. I walked in the room as was shocked because of a sculpture in the middle of the room. Displayed in the middle of this room in an immaculate ancient palace was an enormous metal sculpture of a dog shaped balloon animal. Directly above the dog was a massive painting covering the ceiling named Apotheosis of Hercules which was the reason the room itself was named Hercules Room. The reason I was surprised when I walked into the room was because the dog balloon sculpture was extremely different than the ceiling above it and everything surrounding it making it seem out of place. The Balloon Dog sculpture was created by a man named Jeff Koons in 1994. The dog is an optimistic piece, it's similar to a balloon a clown would make for a child at a ... The Louvre was not founded as a museum, and the road to attaining today's program expanded across six centuries of monarchies, wars, treaties, and revolution. Dating far back to the 12th century as a fortress for King Phillip II, the Louvre laid foundations with protective walls, and underground crypts to function not as a gallery for the public, but rather a stronghold for the private. As the decades turned, the old Louvre acclimated to the needs of the monarchies, undergoing usage as both a stronghold and a retreat, but entirely defense–based nonetheless (Deitz). Two centuries passed when Charles V altered the program from a bulwark of protection, changing it into a residency. Here the program shifted towards a notion of more public structure. Several French kings after, Francis I decorated the bulky fortress with a French renaissance style, further changing the Louvre's appearance and adapting the architecture to the art style of the time. This move would be seen again in I. M. Pei's controversial addition. Under King Henry IV, the Louvre underwent reconstruction (Kostof). Descriptive Essay About Paris Paris is like no other place on earth, its beauty is indescribable, the amount of famous structures is astounding, and is attraction draws many tourists there every year. My experience touring Paris will always be on of my favorite memories. Everywhere I looked, it was as if I was in a dream. There was so much elegance in such simple structures it seemed unrealistic. Wherever I went, it seemed as if the magnificence only grew with each passing step. It all started with the most exhilarating train ride ever. It was about four hours long, and we were going so fast that the world around me seemed non–existent. The trees were whizzing by so quick that I could hardly see what color they were. The food that was served melted in my mouth making me want more with every bite. The aroma of the different types of food from a variety of places coming together to make my mouth water. Seeing the bustling streets of Paris filled with people as amazed as we were trying to take in the scenery that was so vast, it seemed like years before we could visit it all. I was so excited to see what awaited us in the days to come. Our first stop was the Eiffel Tower, standing next to such an amazing piece of art was a privilege as well as intimidating. A Comparison of the Relationship between Paris and Helen and the Relationship between Hector and Andromache The relationship between Paris and Helen differs greatly from the relationship between Hector and Andromache. These differences are most evident in books three and six. A major difference between the two relationships is whether or not an outside force is pushing the relationship. In book three lines 486 to 489, Aphrodite forces Helen to go back to the bedroom with Paris. Initially, Helen does not want to go stating that it would be "disgraceful to share that coward's bed once more" (, 476). Helen very clearly does not want to go back and be with Paris, but cannot go against Aphrodite's wishes which is shown as "she [goes] along, in silence" (, 488). Hector, on the other hand, makes the choice to go back and see his wife in book six. Unlike Helen going along is silence, Andromache "came running up to meet him" (V, 466). Andromache's eagerness, as shown by her running, supports the idea that her relationship with Hector is not forced. This is a huge difference from Helen's reluctance of being with Paris due to it being forced by Aphrodite. There is also a huge difference between the relationships in whether or not one wishes their partner were dead. In book three, when Helen sees Paris back to the war she is disgusted to see him back and not fighting as shown by her saying, "Oh would to god you'd died there, brought down by that great soldier, my husband long ago" (, 500–501). Not only does she say she wishes he would've died she also brings up that her previous husband, Menelaus, would have killed him. Later, in line 510, she reiterates a similar statement saying that Menelaus would impale Paris with his spear. Helen's wishes of Menelaus killing Paris is a sharp contrast to how Andromache reacts after Hector returns home. Andromache begs Hector to stay with her and pleads in book 6 line 511 to think about how her son will be an orphan and she will be a widow if he dies. Even the thought of Hector dying and leaving her alone made her act "like a madwoman" (V, 460). Andromache differs greatly from Helen here in the way that she so desperately wants Hector to live while Helen seemingly wants Paris dead. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Paris Is Burning COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE Ava Morrow History 3220 The United States in the 20th Century November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid–1980's, a number of efforts were initiated to bring awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these awareness campaigns were the documentaries "Paris Is Burning" and "How to Survive a Plague" . Both films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles. The movie "Paris Is Burning" is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the African–American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in the mid–to–late 1980's. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub–culture of LGBT people who "walk" or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously–arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing ability. Much of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied methods of expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty, and homophobia. "How to Survive a Plague" is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS–victims.
