Religious conflicts have occurred more frequently in the post-Cold War era for several reasons:
1. Religious differences make conflict more likely and intense, both domestically and internationally. Countries with more religious diversity tend to have more violent conflicts.
2. Religion shapes discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, especially in autocratic states where religion plays a role in politics.
3. Regimes in Muslim-majority states tend to be more autocratic, restricting civil and political liberties, which can exacerbate tensions.
4. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-running example where religious issues are intertwined with national, territorial, and economic issues.

3. Discuss the reason why religious conflicts around the world have
occurred particularly in the post-cold war era? Does it reflect any
social inequality and/or ideological struggle? Please make the clear
difference or make the deep connection between the conflict of
religion and the social conflict by providing a specific case?
4. Six types of international conflicts
● Ethnic
● Ideological
● Territorial
● Religious
● Governmental
● Economic
Conflict occurs when something is contested. When we couple religion with conflict, we
might expect that what is contested is ideology or morality (i.e., belief).
Religions in different ways will inevitably cause different missionary values of religious
organizations for conflict due to different opinions and interests.
Religions mainly affects in two ways:
● First, the peace of the competition
● The second is mandatory struggle, including armed fights and war. The world's
religious conflicts in the three major religions, Christianity, Islam conflict as well
as Judaism which are the most long-term performance, the most intense.
5. Religious conflicts are complex,
often together with the national
struggle, the state struggles.
The main reasons are:
1. Different doctrines, different values,
causing the opposite of ideology.
2. Representatives of the different economic,
political interests, causing the interests of the
conflict.
3. In order to survive and lead to the
development of other religious forces and
external conflicts.
4. With the geographical environment, and
the peripheral national situation about.
5. Power of the ruler used by religious
organizations, as a political and economic
interests of the tool caused by the conflict.
6. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the hot spot in the Middle East. Moreover,
there are external factors which worsen it such as country intervention, economy
issues and so on, making the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian. The Israeli-
Palestinian conflict is a non-stop one.
Will the Middle East achieve real peace some day?

7. Consequences
● The most recent example is the Iran-Iraq
war, whose number of dead is estimated at
over 1,500,000.
● In 2012, at least 167 Palestinians and six
Israelis were killed during an Israeli
operation.
● Most recently in July 2014, authorities said
over 2,200 people were killed - most of
them Palestinians.

8. Are middle east conflicts more religious?
Religious differences make conflict more likely and more intense. The more
diverse a country’s religious population, the more violent its domestic conflicts
tend to be. Religious differences also make international wars more likely.
Religion shapes
discrimination against
ethnic minorities. Religious
and nonreligious
discrimination is more likely
in states where it is legitimate
to use religion in political
discourse and in conflicts
where religious issues are
important.
Autocratic regimes are more
likely than non-autocratic
regimes to discriminate
against religious minorities.
Autocracies engage in higher
average levels of discrimination
against ethno-religious
minorities than do
democracies.
Regimes in Muslim states are
more autocratic. One study
finds that Muslim states are the
most autocratic states in the
world, based on a measure of
the extent to which a state is a
liberal democracy as well as on
a separate measure of
institutional democracy.

11. Conclusion
It is easy to assume that the prevalence of
religious conflict in the Middle East is due
to the region’s Islamic and autocratic
character. It is also easy to assume that the
region’s high concentration of autocracy is
due to the region’s Islamic character. Yet
neither of these assumptions appear to be
correct. Since the awakening of religion,
wars have been fought in the name of
different gods and goddesses. Still today
most violent conflicts contain religious
elements linked up with ethno-national,
inter-state, economic, territorial, cultural
and other issues.
