This document summarizes various library services at King's College London including open access, the Pure research portal, PhD e-theses submission, bibliometrics and citation analysis, and research data management. Open access encourages wider visibility and impact of research by making outputs freely available. Researchers can self-archive in an institutional repository or publish open access versions of articles. The Pure portal showcases the university's research and houses full-text publications. PhD students must submit an electronic version of their thesis to the institutional repository. The library provides support for bibliometric analysis and research data management services.

4. Open Access (OA)
• OA is the availability of research outputs to anyone at point of need.
• It encourages wider visibility of research, higher citations, and greater
impact. Many funders now mandate OA including RCUK, Wellcome
Trust, & NIHR.
• Two main routes to OA: Self-deposit of full-text in an online repository
(‘green’) - with an embargo period if required, AND/OR making the
published version freely available in the online journal (‘gold’) –
usually requires payment of a fee.

5. Pure and the Research Portal
• Pure, the King’s Research Information System, incorporates an
Institutional Repository to hold records and full-text of publications by
King’s authors.
• It creates researcher and department profiles, including information
about grants, projects and research outputs. All academics and PhD
students automatically have a Pure profile that they can edit.
• The Research Portal https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/ is the front-end
of Pure. It showcases King’s research to the world, it is indexed by
Google and other search engines and is accessible to anyone.

6. PhD e-theses
• King’s PhD students are required to submit an electronic e-theses
version of their thesis, along with the bound print copies for the
Library.
• E-theses will be uploaded into King’s institutional repository Pure.
• An embargo may be requested for a few years in cases of
commercially sensitive material, inclusion of 3rd party copyright
material where clearance is being obtained, or possible future
publication.

7. Citation analysis or bibliometrics
• Citation analysis is increasingly important for research evaluation.
• Health and Science subjects are mostly well covered by the citation
indexes Web of Science and Scopus. Citation analysis is not always
appropriate in Arts & Humanities, most Social Sciences and some Natural
Sciences. In these areas Google Scholar or ‘Publish or Perish’ can be used
to derive some citation information.
• Web of Science and Scopus can be used to calculate citation measures (e.g.
h-index) for individual researchers. Comparative analysis of groups and
institutions requires specialised tools such as SciVal.

8. Research data management
Research data management includes, but is not limited to:
• Planning your data management needs in advance
• Collecting data that is correctly formatted and legally and ethically
compliant
• Organising data so that it is consistently named and properly described
• Ensuring that your data is adequately stored and secured
• Depositing your data for preservation, reuse, publication and citation
