Secondary City
7
Primary/primate city: largest city that is disproportionately larger than others
Secondary city: subnational concentrations of population and economies
Tertiary city: small-scale cities, oriented towards manufacturing
8
Defining the Secondary City
• UN-Habitat (1996): an urban area generally
having a population between 100,000 and
500,000
• However, city size alone is no longer relevant
in the definition of secondary cities.
9
Defining the Secondary City
• Cities Alliance (2014): cities with populations
10-50% of country’s largest city and fall into
one of three types

are potential engines
of growth

Editor's Notes

  1. 1. In 2007, for the first time in history, global urban population exceeded global rural population. in 2050, the world will be two-thirds urban.
  2. Hierarchy of cities
  3. Rank 7 in the 2016 CMCI in All Cities list. The presence of the Laguindingan Airport makes CDO the gateway to Northern Mindanao. CAAP touted Laguindingan Airport to become busiest regional transport facility upon completion of expansions. It basically accommodates 2,000 persons a day. There are six major foreign and domestic shipping lines operating in Northern Mindanao thru MCT on a weekly call frequency: American President Lines, Maersk Lines, Marianas Express Shipping, NMC Container Lines, Lorenzo Shipping Lines and MCC Transport Philippines.
  4. Legazpi City is recognized as a hall of Famer for being the top component city in DRR for 2013-2015. Gawad Kalasag, which stands for  Kalamidad at Sakuna, Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan, is a nationwide award being given yearly in recognition of the outstanding performances of local government units (LGUs), including barangays, as well as civil society organizations, private and public service institutions and volunteer groups in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) and in humanitarian assistance
