Indian Ocean Earthquake & Tsunami
Two days ago, December 26, an Indian Ocean earthquake in the West coast of Sumatra,
Indonesia, cause the death of 2227.898 people.
This earthquake is thought to have had the energy of 23.000 Hiroshimatype atomic bombs,
a 9.1 magnitude earthquake. The violent movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates displaced
an enormous amount of water, sending powerful shock waves in every direction. As a result,
trillions of tons of rock moved, causing the largest magnitude earthquake in 40 years.
The waves slammed into the coastlines of eleven countries, damaging countries from east
Africa to Thailand. A tsunami is a series of waves, so the first wave may not be the most
dangerous, but the ones that came after, may be. The victims were taken completely by
surprise because there were no tsunami warning systems in that place.
In my opinion, Indonesia must adopt tsunamis and earthquakes warning systems.
Diary:
Dear Diary,
My family and I went to a hotel in Indonesia to celebrate Christmas. We had a lot of
fun there. But, one day we were playing in the swimming pool, when suddenly, a huge
earthquake struck in the Indian Ocean, causing a tsunami. The magnitude was 9,1. I was so
scared, I had never been part of an earthquake or a tsunami before. When the scientists
said that the tsunami did most of the damage than the earthquake, I was more calm,
because the earthquakes appeared all the time in the city where I lived. On the other hand, I
am very happy because, since the earthquake did not just hit my homeland, I mean it also hit
