2. Where are the telescopes?
1. They are situated in Africa and Australia.
2. To be more exact South Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Kenya, Ghana and
Namibia.
3. It is mainly in South Africa
Why were these places chosen?
1. They were chosen for being away from urban areas where there are radio
waves almost everywhere e.g. coming from your cell-phone.
2. They were also chosen for being in areas which don’t get a lot of rain and for
clouds seldom staying over the sites for too long and the places are high up.
3. What are the different types of
telescopes?
1. There are three types of telescopes:
1. Small
2. medium
3. large
2. They all do different jobs.
What will they be trying to look at with
these telescopes?
1. They are trying to find answers about planets.
2. They are looking for information about formations of the stars and planets around
the time of the bi bang.
3. They are also looking for Hydrogen gas around the time of the big bang.
4. What was the big bang?
1. The big bang was the beginning of the universe.
2. Something made a spark explode which:
• Made gasses
• Made the gasses turn into stars and planets
3. Scientists do not know much about the big bang which is why SKA is trying to find out
more about it.
5. We still have a few questions that we will be asking the
scientist tommorow, over Skype:
1. What is the difference between the different types of telescopes?
2. What are the different jobs the telescopes do?
3. What are they generally looking answers for?
4. What is Einsteins theory of relativity?
5. What makes you use radio waves instead of other forms of information?
6. How does the information get transferred to places where you look at it?
7. How does Meerkat fit into SKA?
8. How do the telescopes turn radio waves into information?
9. What is the Gregorian offset dish?
10. How do the telescopes connect to make one big telescope?
11. How will you find out about planets that have been destroyed?
12. Why is the government putting in so much money?
13. Why is it called the square kilometre array?
14. Do the different size telescopes look at different things?
15. Do you believe there is life out in space?
6. When will the project be finshed?
• The full SKA project is scheduled to finish in 2024.
• Although the Meerkat project is schedukled to be finished in 5 years 2016.
7. Facts about space and galaxies:
• The Scientists found a new galaxy this year on the 19 of March.
• SKA is placing 64 telescopes to make one.
• They have built 7 telescopes so far.
• Close to 100 young scientists and engineers are working on the
project.
• The SKA telescope will be the biggest telescope in history.
• It is going to be the most successful experiment.
• It will cost about 20 billion to build the SKA telescopes.
• The telescopes are in groups of three.
• SKA stand for Square Kilometer Array
• It is called this because it is lots of telescopes over thousand of
kilometers.
8. Thank you for reading our powerpoint
The Question now is:
What will they find?
And
What will it lead to?
