Welcome! Marlie Smith, PD @ Jtown and 2004 Student-Athlete Graduate from ODU. Appreciation and thanks. What you think of short video? Why I’m here
Ever heard of 4-H (if you could raise your hand, shout out, either way works)? What about involvement in 4-H –whether that be clubs, camps, meetings, volunteering… Can anyone tell me what one of the H’s stand for? ( Candy!) Great, yup, Head embraces the cognitive development; Heart embraces the emotional characteristics; Hands – the physical; and Health-the overall well-being 4-H Motto: To make the best better ; 4H Philosophy – to make the best better 4-H Pledge? FRISBEE!!!!!
Quick history facts– 4-h began in what year? 1902 Where? Clark Count, Ohio What? Tomato/Corn Growing Club Why? Connect public schooling with country life ** This has developed internationally into a full, holistic, youth development movement … and now our nation’s largest youth development organization. Thankfully – we’ve come a long way since then. As you can see – lots of opportunities within the field My job now is to tell you about a few of them… and you’ll hear some good and some not so good scenarios along the way that have built us into a stronger team.
Within National Cooperative Extension lies Virginia Cooperative Extension and 4-H Youth Development, which is going to be our primary focus for today So, out of those 109 Land-grant Universities we receive federal funding from 2 (VA Tech, VSU). Federal for development of Ag, 4-H etc programs. Has anyone been to any of these Centers? What was it like? Differences in Centers, Ie: Clientele, programming, facilities – we all program and offer based on location, size, and facilities
Where I work and who we serve Looking at this map and the geographic location what might be some benefits/barriers strengths/challenges to programming in this location? (Historic Triangle, River – versus Urban/Suburban population – how do you involve these groups and reach out to them? How do we get them engaged? Diversity issues. When we started? 1928
Anything and everything surrounding programming from the ground up….. That means designing, implementing, evaluating and sometimes even grant writing for programs, supplies, and staff; In a nutshell I coordinate every aspect of the 4-H programs. Im responsible for the writing and upholding the policies and procedures, reviewing and revising our Risk Management plans, budgets, staffing, all of it. It’s not just a summer gig – it’s what I do for a living….it’s year-round planning, support, implementation, and review. And in all honesty, there’s no way I could do it by myself – which is why I have both year-round, support staff, and volunteers to help me. Little bit of everything. Coordinate all aspects of programming
Recreation = fun BUT intentional. All programming serves a purpose. Who has heard of the experiential learning cycle . LOL Well, get used to it…have it memorzied…it’s one of the most critical components in programming.
Programming – lots of it, year round…but that’s not all I do! Staff – can’t do this alone! You’ll find out why shortly…but I oversee….. Initatives/Professional Development = maintain the integrity and growth of the program and my position. It’s up to yoU! Part of that involves both the organization (Jamestown) and my professional development. It’s important to understand that these things are all based on self-initiative and my own passions. There are state inititatives, certifications, 4-H inititiatives Budgets – WHO LOVES MATH? Never my favorite subject either, BUT needed. **Lloyd….managing nothing budgetary to over a $650,000 operating budget. Funders, Grants, Costs…bringing us to Marketing – brochures, newsletters, social media! Who has facebook? Keeps our communities informed of what we’re doing, what is coming up, and how they can be involved. So…based on this what strengths or experiences do you believe are necessary for success?
Okay….back to the Fun Part!
From 22 counties/cities I serve – Ext Agent brings them and are integral to the process.
Center-driven, agent-supported Based on community needs
Center driven, school supported On-site and Off-site Utilize our strengths of location – back to mktg … Busch Gardens, Colonial Wburg, Historic Triangle, Jtwon Settlemtn
Again – can’t run it by myself … Too many kids, not enough Marlie **MY job is not so much in working with the kids, but in supporting my staff in working with the kids.
Really is a Year round process summer supervision & support for Staff, recruiting & evaluating- Teens, SIT’s, Staff FALL school visits, review of performance evaluations from previous staff, more school visits, specialty camps Winter interviewing; putting the puzzle together Spring prep and training
Has anybody heard of the above organizations? Why might joining these organizations be helpful in your success as a Rec Professional? Networking! #1; Staying involved with industry trends/needs; Furthering professional development and resources Is anybody involved in any organizations right now? Which ones? What current organizations do you think would help you out professionally?? Campus clubs – rock climbing, adventure clubs, etc?
It’s all what you make of it. Personal Certifications – who currently has some? What are they? why important? Mine – what are they and Based on need and passion Ideas of any additional certifications that might be helpful in this field?
Lots of opportunity My background – review resume & portfolio Camp –My first experience – had it been just my first experience I would have ducked out the door (Henson and songs)
Review Slide… Any additional ideas? OR current things you all are doing?
Questions? Applications, business cards, candy. Thanks
