"The effectiveness of Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) water in Lowering Blood Sugar"
1. "The effectiveness of Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) water in
Lowering Blood Sugar"
Chapter 1
Introduction
Coconut water has many uses especially in terms of using it
as part of the ingredients of our foods. It serves as a cleaning
water to our body. Not only the coconut water but also its parts
and branches. It is very useful for everybody. Coconut tree
helps build houses but what about coconut water? How can a
coconut water helps to lower the blood sugar of a diabetic
person?
Coconut water has a wealth of natural ingredients that help
to control blood sugar levels and help to not only lose but
manage your weight. Weight control is essential in the fight to
control blood sugar whether you are diabetic or you are a
potential diabetic. Coconut water has everything you need to do
both of these essential functions. Nothing is more important to
a diabetic or a potential diabetic than these two things weight
control and control over blood sugar. Diabetics and hypoglycemic
have a hard time keeping control over both their weight and
their blood sugar. Many take medications that can have serious
side effects and have it revolve their lives around these
2. serious illness. However, through the use of coconut water, they
can start to take back their life and can start living a life
that is not dictated by rigid diets, constant monitoring and
medications. Coconut water helps to increase the metabolic rate
of the body, which means that the body is processing things
faster. If you have too much insulin in your body, this means
you are burning through the insulin faster because you are
processing sugar faster. Not only that you are not processing
simply or highly complex sugars so you are increasing your
energy level. Coconut water has many benefits it is viewed by
many as the water of life containing everything necessary to
lead a healthy life. It can replenish the body, control blood
sugar, provides increase energy and helps to increase the
metabolism of the body. It is something that can help you to
level your blood sugar, keep it under control and lose weight.
Diabetics can experience some quite discomforting symptoms
like numbness in their feet, kidney failure and even loss of
vision. All these symptoms are a result of the improper
circulation of blood within their body. Coconut water, when
consumed has the ability to improve the blood circulation within
the body. It helps to widen the blood vessels (which get
constricted due to the formation of plaque within them), and
those helps the blood to flow smoothly through them. This, in
3. turn, gives relief from some of the symptoms, and helps to fight
against atherosclerosis.
In this study, we can know and test the effectiveness of
coconut water in lowering blood sugar.
Statement of the Problem
This research study will determine the effectiveness of
Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) water in Lowering Blood Sugar Level.
Specically, the study will seek answers to the following
questions:
1. What are the chemical content of coconut (Cocos Nucifera)
water?
2. What chemical content of coconut (Cocos Nucifera) water that
lowers the blood sugar level?
Hypotheses
There is no significant effect of coconut (Cocos Nucifera) water
in lowering blood sugar level.
4. Significant of the Study
With this study, people who may benefit are (1) diabetic
person, (2) future researchers and (3) hole community in
general.
People who suffer from high blood sugar level may found an
abundant supply for their treatment for this can be seen
commonly just in their backyard.
Future researchers may take this study as their take off
for further investigation regarding Coconut (Cocos Nucifera)
water as an effective medicine in lowering the blood sugar level
of a diabetic person.
And to all other people, whole country in general may use
this as alternative medicine in their daily lives.
5. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Figure I. The illustration shows the research variables. The
independent variable is the coconut water. The dependent
variable is the blood sugar level of a diabetic person.
Scope and Limitation
This descriptive will be conductive to ascertain
effectiveness of coconut (COcos Nucifera) water in lowering
blood sugar level. The study will utilized one hundred (100)
randomly selected students from Zarraga National High School.
The statistical used in the study were the frequency counts,
percentages and mean for descriptive analysis rank t-test
independent samples and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for
inferential statistics.
6. Definition of Terms
Effectiveness - is the capability of producing a desired result
when something is deemed effective, it means it has an intended
or expected outcome, or produces a deep, vivid impression.
Coconut water - is the liquid found inside a coconut.
Lowering - make or become less in amount, intensity, or degree.
Blood Sugar - is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the
blood of a human or animal. The body naturally highly regulates
blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis.

Review of Related Literature
Coconut water is the liquid inside an immature green coconut.
It is the juice or endosperm of the young coconut, This water is
now popular all over the world for its refreshing taste along
with nutrients and health-benefitting properties.
Related Readings
Coconut water is very refreshing and rich in sugar,
electrolytes and minerals - available in the natural form in
most sterile conditions. It is a natural isotonic drink here the
electrolyte levels are similar to those found in the human body.
Some research has shown coconuts to have cytokines which have
significant anti aging, anti carcinogenic and anti thrombotic
effects.
The water of fresh green coconuts is actually fat free and
has zero cholesterol some studies even go as far as to say that
it increases the HDL levels in the body. Once a coconut is cut
open, the water should be consumed as exposure to air can result
in loss of nutrients. It is low fat though rich in vitamins and
the potassium is twice the amount found in bananas.
8. Related Studies
Coconut water for weight loss
Drinking coconut water helps a person to lose weight as it
is lo in fat - it keeps a person feeling full of reduces food
cravings. It is a storehouse of important nutrients, B-complex
vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, thiamin and pyridoxine and
foliates. It has anti-viral and anti-bacterial - these helps hen
a person has flu or herpes - boyh of which are due to viral
infections. Coconut water isn't just before rehydration,
however.
This study show that it provides numerous health benefits,
some of which are the following: dissolving kidney stones,
protecting againts cancer, balancing blood sugar, providing
ionic trace minerals, improving digestion, feeding friendly gut
bacteria, relieving blood circulation, lowering high blood
pressure, helping prevent asterioscleosis, possessing anti-aging
properties and enhancing immune function. (Dr. Bruce Fife, 2011)
Coconut water serves as a suspension for the endosperm of
the coconut during its nuclear phase of development. Later, the
endosperm matures and deposits onto the coconut rind during the
cellular phase. Coconut water contains sugar, dietary fiber,
proteins, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and provides an
9. isotonic electrolyte balance. It is consumed as a refreshing
drink throughout the humid topics, and is gaining popularity as
a sport drink. Mature fruits have significantly less liquid than
young immature coconuts, barring spoilage. Coconut water can be
fermented to produce coconut vinegar. The health benefits of the
coconut water includes: Boosting of the immune system,
detoxification and fighting viruses and also help cleanse the
digestive track. (Dr. Roberto Frias, 2010)
Coconut water is idely used in the plant tissue Culture
industry, growing fungus and other microbes (Renato et al.,2009;
Verdiel et al., 2002; Ang and Yong, 2005 and Arditti, 2008). The
extensive use of coconut water as a growth promoting component
in tissue culture medium formulation can be traced back to more
than half a century ago, when Overbeek et al. first introduced
coconut water as a new component of the nutrient medium for
callus cultures in 1947. In few such studies, coconut ater as
used as a complete medium for microbial growth Oloke and Glick,
2006. Unagul et al. (2007) demonstrated the supplementation of
coconut water to yeast extract-diluted seawater medium for the
production of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which was 50% higher
than that of non-supplemented media.
Coconut water appears to be able to support the synthesis
of proteins from recombinant DNA vectors (Bustamante, 2007).
10. Filtered coconut water from young Brazilian coconut displayed
high reductase activity at ambient temperature in a series of
aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes and ketones, suggesting that
coconut water is probably still under used in the organic
synthesis research field (Da fonseca et al., 2006).
Dolezal, (2006) has also stated that coconut water is the
richest natural dietary source of cytokinins. Researchers have
suggested the possibility that consuming a rich source of
cytokinins, such as coconut water, may produce an anti-aging
effect on the body, reducing risk of developing degenerative and
age related diseases. In regulating cell growth, aids in the
vitamin C and cytokinis etc. (Vigliar et al., 2006). Other
components in TCW include sugars, sugar alcohols, lipids, amino
acids, nitrogenous compounds, organic acids and enzymes (Santoso
et al., 1996: USDA, 2009)
Since TCW is a naturally occuring liquid, its chemical
composition varies from coconut to coconut. To validate and
demonstrate the effect of this variation on growth, biomass of
E.coli in different TCW samples were studied, which ranged from
OD600nm of 0.15-2.5 after 12 hours of incubation. This indicates
that nutrients present in TCW vary with each coconut which could
presumable be due to; the maturity, location and variety of
coconut fruit, thus influencing its chemical profile. For
11. instance, sugars like glucose and fructose are higher in young
coconut (TCW) whereas, sucrose is the predominant sugar in
mature coconut water. Kuberski et al., 2006 made similar
observations where, sugar content in coconut water was
identified as glucose, sucrose and fructose in the proportion of
approximately 50%, 35% and 15%, respectively.
