Making The Most Of Your Budget
There are a lot of companies after your money. What should we consider before making a purchase?
•

Does your school have the infrastructure to support multiple devices?

•

Decide what tablets you will buy. iPads? Android devices? Windows RT? Which versions? This may
depend on how you wish to use them. Are there platform specific apps you want to use?

•

Talk to other schools. Where did they get theirs from? What was the service like? Did they get
discount?

•

Will you pay for device management software or use free software?

•

Do you have an expert in school that can provide training or will you outsource?

Supporting Colleagues
It is exceptionally important to support members of staff and provide training. If colleagues are not
confident and do not see the value of tablets, the initiate could be doomed to fail.
•

Begin with a launch. Make is a big deal. Ask keen members of staff to take part. They can then
demonstrate the power of tablets and how they can support teaching and learning.

•

Each department could have tablet 'leaders'. They will be given full training and begin to work
with, and support other department members.

•
•

Provide training material like video tutorials.
The person running the initiative can suggest new and exciting apps and way they can be used in
departments / whole school

Monitor and Evaluate Tablet Use
Before deciding to splash out on a lot of expensive devices run a small scale trial.
•

Ask teachers / departments to submit an idea for a project using iPads to support T/L. What are
the learning objectives / outcomes?

•

Create an online (or offline) form for teachers to submit their ideas. Keep track of what dates
these projects will run

•

Create online (or offline) evaluation forms for students and teachers. After each project ask them
to complete the forms.

•

Analyse the results from each project and decide whether the trail was a success.

Coding And Programming

Coding And Programming
There are several great app that can be used to make coding and programming more exciting. They will
also take students away the traditional way of learning how to code.
•

Kakitzu: Programme a robot to go into battle using JavaScript

•

Hopscoth: A basic introduction to programming, similar to Scratch

•

Codea: Lets you create games and simulations, built on the Lua language.

•

iTunesU: Lots of free programming courses available or you could create your own.

•

Grafio: Create flow charts for algorithms

•

Notability: Students can use this to annotate lines of code and demonstrate understanding

Create a Technology Rich Curriculum
Many people falsely claim that tablets are simply just for consuming information. This is not true, tablets
can also enable teachers and students to create content when it was previously not possible.
•

Tablets can turn anywhere in the school into a ICT room. It could be a room or outside space.

•

They have multimedia functionality, negating the need for expensive equipment.

•

You can easily create ebooks, videos, music, animated tutorials, music broadcasts, presentations,
artwork and office documents

•

Read interactive ebooks, annotate PDF's, surf the web, read the news,

Create a Technology Rich Curriculum
Examples of tablet use:
•

Students can create their own or collaborative ebooks for an English project

•

Use apps like Explain Everything as interactive whiteboards and record and share the results as a video resource

•

Keynote can be used to create engaging presentations with audio and video created on the iPad

•

Rather than moving a whole class to do some internet research, use a tablet anywhere with WiFi

•

Use apps like WW2 Timeline in History lessons to make teaching and learning more engaging and exciting

•

There are a lot of anatomy apps that could be used in Science that let students augment parts of the body.

Supporting SEN Students
Tablets have some fantastic accessibility features. An example of the features on an iPad are:

Supporting G&T Students
• Tablets and mobile devices allow students to expand on what they have been taught
• They can access digital resources that can build on class work
• Tablets can help students work independently
• Students can create their own resources that can help cement their understanding
• Tablets allow students to learn from anywhere
• Gifted students can use advanced Maths, Science, History (etc) apps to further learning
• Talented students can use apps to help coach sport, create music, make a work of art or design a house/
room

Introducing BYOD
How can introduce BYOD into your school?
•

Again, check you have the infrastructure to support BYOD

•

How will you manage multiple platforms?

•

You need to consider the impact BYOD will have on your classroom

•

What will you use the devices for?

•

You must ensure their is staff training and support in place

•

Create a BYOD policy
