2. Ross
23 years old.
Fraternal twin.
Used to work in recruitment, now looking for a career change.
Originally from Devon.
Enjoys relaxed travelling and surfing.
3. Problem
Discovered pain points: surfing when overseas
Ross would love to have the option to go surfing but no way to know
where he can hire surfboards
He uses MagicSeaweed - an existing surfing app that has several
limitations:
• inability to solve the above.
• only business that pay get listed.
• only really good within the UK
4. Problem
Ross would like an app where he can find
all the information he needs to decide
whether he wants to go for a surf including
if there are places for him to hire surf gear
nearby.
5. Research
• Used contextual inquiry to gain information and insights
about Ross and his pain points.
• Conducted participatory design session with Ross which
involved sketching ideas.
• I sketched a ton of ideas and narrowed them down through
collaboration with Ross.
• The user flow helped focus on the important steps and
features that should appear on the app.
6.
7. Prototype
• First created a paper prototype with pen and paper.
• Then used pop to turn this paper prototype into a
clickable/interactive prototype that the user could interact with
as if they were using it as an app. This was in order to test
whether the app would is useful to the user and meet their
goals.
8.
9. Testing
Tested prototype with users.
Discovered a couple of issues:
1) Users did not know that they could scroll down from the
info screen to get to further information.
2) Users did not know they could double tap on
location icon to get more information.
3) users were a bit confused about the first page when you
would open up the app.
11. Learnings
• I learned that users needed to know where to go.
• . Users needed to know they could scroll down; they
needed to know when to tap on an icon that didn’t
resemble an actual button.
12. Next steps
• add a tooltip or indicate that the location icon can be
double tapped.
• test the search interface to see if it makes sense and
users can navigate.
• add a social functionality for more timely information
about surf conditions.
• more testing and iterations.
