3. Lesson Aim: Know the organisation
of the human body
Today’s objectives:
LO1 Recall previous knowledge on cells
LO2 Determine the structure and function of organelles
LO3 Create an animal cell
4. Introduction to a generalised animal cell
Task – 3 minutes.
Research a definition of an animal cell
The basic membrane-bound unit that contains the fundamental
molecules of life and which all living things are made of.
Cells forms the basic units of all living organisms. Cells show
properties that characterise life. They absorb or produce food,
reproduce, are sensitive to changes in their environment and control
their chemical processes. There are lots of different types of cells
that make up living organisms but they are all similar in structure.

5. Mrs Who?
What does the acronym MRS GREN stand for?
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
All Cells need to be
able to perform these
functions to be able to
survive and reproduce.
6. What do you already know?
Individually, write down everything you know or can
remember about cells.
If you need pointers think about the following
questions:
What do cells make?
Are there different types of cells?
What is inside a cell?
7.
8.
9. Nucleus – this is in the centre of the cell and
controls all of the cells activity
Cell Membrane – this protects the cell and
helps to maintain its shape by surrounding all
of the organelles
Mitochondria – this organelle provides the
cells energy and looks like a woodlouse!
Nucleolus – this organelle is in the centre of
the nucleus and contains each cells genetic
material.
Cytoplasm – this is the fluid that suspends all
of the organelles, it nourishes the cell
Golgi Complex – this organelle creates
proteins which cell needs to grow and
reproduce. It looks like a stack of rubber
bands.
Endoplasmic Reticulum – this organelle
surrounds the nucleus
Lysosome – this organelle acts as a cell
cleaner and metabolises worn out organelles.
It looks like a passion fruit in this picture
Vacuole – this organelle looks is comparative
to a bubble and acts as a storage unit for the
cell.
