2. What is Septic Arthritis
Septic arthritis is “inflammation of a synovial membrane with a
purulent effusion into the joint capsule” normally due to a bacterial
infection.
Lead to severe joint destruction (within 24hrs), sepsis and death.
Signs & Symptoms
Pain
Hot, Red, Swollen, joint (with pulerent aspirate if effusion present)
Fever (Systemically unwell)
Decreased joint movement
3. Treatment
Take a good clinical Hx
• If septic arthritis is suspected:
1. Give good analgesia
2. Ensure blood cultures and synovial fluid have been taken and sent to
microbiology
3. Quickly start empirical IV antibiotics, best choice determined by risk
factor profile and age, until sensitivities are known.
4. Remove any purulent material: Ask advice regarding joint
aspiration/levage.
5. Adjust initial antibiotics once culture results are known.
4. Use of poster

and initial treatment of septic arthritis

an easy to use guide on the initial choice of
antibiotics.
5. Summary
Quick diagnosis and treatment to prevent severe joint
damage.
In the immediate management of septic arthritis the joint
should be aspirated and sent to the microbiologist.
Whilst awaiting the results, the choice of initial antibiotic
treatment will have to be based upon a careful assessment
of the patients:
