1. Reflexive: The film maker acknowledges
their presence, for example they are in
front of the camera
2. Poetic: It has an artistic narrative
3. Observational: Being there as events
happen and unfold
4. Expository: analysis and exposition of a
person or a topic
3. Example 1: Louis Theroux and the
Nazis'
• Reflexive
Why? Because the documenter is in front of the
camera and is part of what's happening
• Expository
Why? It is an analysis of a group of peoples way of
living in America, they are exposed in a negative
light
• Observational
Why? He is focused on one man for the majority, he
follows him in his daily life and is there as events
happen
4. Example 2: Michael Moore-
Bowling for Columbine
• Expository
Why? It is an analysis and exposition of a
topic, which teaches people about an
event and informs them of background
information.
• Reflexive
Why? There is a narrator who’s voice is
often used in voice over's and who
appears in front of the camera on occasion
5. Example 3: My Big Fat Gypsy
Wedding
• Expository
Why? It exposes a way of living, showing
aspects such as traditions.
• Observational
Why? The focus is normally on one bride
and it follows her day to day life as she
organises her wedding. The camera is
there as events leading up to the wedding
day happen.
