A way of exchanging information
between computers on the
internet.
The network of pages of images,
texts and sounds on the internet
which can be viewed using
browser software.
1989-1990- Tim Berners Lee
invents the World Wide Web at
• Clients use browser application to
send URIs via HTTP to servers
requesting a Web page
• Web pages constructed using HTML
(or other markup language) and
consist of text, graphics, sounds plus
embedded files
• Servers (or caches) respond with
requested Web page
– Or with error message
• Client’s browser renders Web page
returned by server
– Page is written using Hyper Text
Markup Language (HTML)
– Displaying text, graphics and
sound in browser
– Writing data as well
• The entire system runs over
standard networking protocols
(TCP/IP, DNS,…)
• Structural ComponentsStructural Components
– Clients/browsers – to dominant
implementations
– Servers – run on sophisticated
hardware
– Caches – many interesting
implementations
– Internet – the global infrastructure
which facilitates data transfer
• Semantic ComponentsSemantic Components
– Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
– Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)
• extensible Markup Language (XML)
– Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs)
Four basic phases:
 connection
 request
 response
 close
First, the user can use the
browser to connect with the server.
The browser works by using a
special protocol, which is called
HTTP to request a specially encoded
text from the web server. The text is
written in HTML, which tells the
browser how to display the text on
the user’s screen. . One can also use
ftp, gopher, wais, telnet and archive
to command the server to search for
the information desired. Web pages
are written in HTML
<H1>, which means the page
heading. The commands are enclosed
in angle bracket.
URLs (UNIFORM RESOURSE
LOCATORS), an Internet address.
Four parts:
protocol
domain name
Path
Filename
Example:
 http://home.mcom.com/home/inte
rnetsearch.html
Hypertext system, which
allows a user to move from
document to document without
knowing the address of specific web
sites.
For example:
The text on the screen will
have some highlighted spots. One
needs only to click the mouse, and
the information will be pulled to the
screen in a few seconds.
Students have access to a wide range
of knowledge
Students can develop in socially
relevant ways.
The Internet is a massive network of
networks, a networking
infrastructure. It connects millions
of computers together globally,
forming a network in which any
computer can communicate with any
other computer as long as they are
both connected to the Internet.
The World Wide Web, or simply Web,
is a way of accessing information
over the medium of the Internet. It
is an information-sharing model that
is built on top of the Internet.
