2. What are Hydraullics Pump And
How It Operates?
•A hydraulic pump is a mechanical source of power that
converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy.
•A hydraulic pump generates flow with enough power to
overcome pressure induced by the load at the pump outlet.
•It creates a vacuum at the pump inlet, which forces liquid
from the reservoir into the inlet line to the pump and by
mechanical action delivers this liquid to the pump outlet
and forces it into the hydraulic system.
•Hydraulic pumps are used in hydraulics drive system and
can be hydrostatic or hydrodynamic
3. Hydrostatic And Hydrodynamic
Pump
•Hydrostatic pumps are positive displacement pump.
•Hydrostatics pump which are of various types works on the
principle of Pascal’s Law.
•Hydrodynamic pumps can be fixed displacement pumps(fixed
volume pump) and variable displacement pump.
•Hydrodynamic pumps are more frequent in day-to-day life.
4. Fixed Volume Or Dipalcement
Pump
•The fixed displacement pumps the amount of flow which
has to be displaced by each pump shaft rotation cannot be
altered.
•The pump's displacement is varied only by changing the
speed of the pump.
•Fixed displacement pumps do not find many application.
•The volume is a constant given each cycle of operation.
•The fixed displacement pump is sized precisely for the
speed or the flow rate required.
•When a fixed displacement pump is being unloaded still
energy is converted to heat.
5. Where Are Fixed Volume Pump
Are Used ?
•System pressure must be maintained on a stalled actuator.
•The hydraulic circuit operates over a broad speed range.
•The pump cannot be unloaded by the circuit design during idle periods.
•During a large portion of the cycle the actuator must be operated at a
very low speed.
6. Types Of Fixed Volume Pump
1. Gear pump:- Gear pumps are simple and economical pumps.
They have the lowest volumetric efficiency ( η v ≈ 90
%). These pumps create pressure through the meshing of the
gear teeth, which forces fluid around the gears to pressurize the
outlet side.
7. 2. Rotary vane pumps:- Rotary vanes pumps have higher
efficiencies than gear pumps. They are also used for mid
pressures up to 180 bar. Some types of vane pumps can
change the centre of the vane body, so that a simple
adjustable pump is obtained.
8. 3. Screw pumps:-It consist of two Archimedes Screw that intermesh
and are enclosed within the same chamber. These pumps are used for
high flows at relatively low pressure max 100 bars. The efficiency is not
high . The hydraulic reaction force is transmitted in a direction that's
axially opposed to the direction of the flow.
9. 4. Axial Piston Pump:-An axial piston pump has a number of
pistons in a circular array within a cylinder blocks. It can be
used as a stand-alone pump a hydraulics motor or an automotive
air conditioning compressor. These pumps can in general work
with a working pressure of up to 350–420 bars in continuous
work.
