New Brunswick Loyalist Journeys, University of New
Brunswick Library
“this research project had the goal of
creating biographies for a number of York
County loyalists with materials readily
accessible from the Harriet Irving
Library. Student assistants, a federal grant
student, and Microforms Unit staff took on
the role of researchers. By the end of the
summer, ten basic biographies were
completed highlighting the diversity of New
Brunswick loyalists and their varied
experiences. During the summer of 2017, the
biographies were staged using Esri GIS story
mapping software to showcase the individual
lives and research.” – The Project tab

Ways to create a Story Map
► Use Story Map builder tools (e.g. free, public account)
► Create a map in ArcGIS online; then choose Create Web
Map > using a template
► Download compiled zipped app and hosting on your own
server; or get storymap source code from ESRI on github
(there is a good blogpost here).
Classic Story Maps
 In spring 2019, ESRI announced Classic Story Maps were being
phased out!
 June 2019 new ArcGIS StoryMaps debuted, limited features; not
mature
 Storymaps using classic templates cannot be created after July
2021. Accessing all Classic Story Maps will be supported through
2024.
 Today’s hands-on exercise will use the new ArcGIS StoryMaps
Classic Story Maps, cont’d
During my sabbatical, I constructed several prototypes using the classic
templates, in order to:
 become familiar with terminology and tools
 use existing tutorials
 work in the application
 explore ArcGIS overall
 compare existing functionality and features of Classic Story Maps with
new Storymaps platform
Seven Classic Storymap templates
Story Map Shortlist template
Themed tabs, with thumbnails.
Works well for curated lists.

Story Map Tour template
3 different layouts, one with
thumbnails along bottom seemed to
work best; sequence of places in
mainstage with story action triggers

Story Map Series template
Maps plus tabs. Switch between
bullets, tabs, or side accordian.
Uses “story action triggers” to
change to main stage.
I created a series storymap after
reading about the two 2019
finalists from Concordia, and the
chance to participate in voting
for the “People’s Award Choice”.
My Science Exposed storymap is
not public, but see next slide.
Previous winning entries are available at
the official
Science Exposed website.

Story Map Cascade template
 Very popular, widely used. Manuscript Maps (Harvard Map Library) uses
Cascade.
 Since many aspects of this template were ported to new ArcGIS StoryMaps, a
prototype using Cascade was not built.
 Rather, a full-fledged ArcGIS Storymap was built and will be demoed
 The hands-on portion of this workshop uses new ArcGIS StoryMaps
ArcGIS StoryMaps vs Classic StoryMaps
Using Images
 UPLOAD from desktop / laptop / thumb drive, etc.
 BUT: no file management tools post-upload. What’s image filename? Size? Path? etc.
 LINK – inserting images using links available with Classic templates
 hosted server, library share, image server
 Built-in integrations in Classic templates ▷
 Flickr
 Videos: Vimeo and Youtube supported
►curate albums, photos, galleries
►Limit to CC-BY
►free account
►Many libraries have ready-to-go curated collections
► Flickr ipad app upload IPhone photos (my go-to method). Android
app available.
►As of this writing, built-in integration not yet available in public
accounts in new ArcGIS Storymaps
Flickr advantages
Check Flickr Global settings
To use your own photos, create an
account
Go to Account Settings
> Privacy & Permissions
> Global Settings
Use the following settings:
• “Hide your EXIF data?” No
• “Hide your stuff from public

attribution right away.
There are no file
management tools
after upload.
Express Map
 Express maps are maps quickly
created on-the-fly within a StoryMap.
 Features: Draw points, lines, areas,
add text
 As of this writing, express maps
cannot be saved, duplicated,
accessed, printed, or used outside of
the StoryMap.
 TIP: If you want to be able to make
changes, duplicate, reuse or print,
create a Map, rather than express
map.
Insert an Express Map
► Click on Add Map
► Select Create an express map
► In search box at top right, type H3G-1M8 (Concordia downtown postal code)
► Select Montreal from the dropdown.. The map will reposition itself.
► Click on gear. Change/select the middle basemap.
► Zoom in until you can see buildings. Explore the drawing tools by adding some points.
Add a layer or two. Experiment.
► Then select Place Map .
Next, add Sidecar
► Sidecar lets you add scrolling narrative text
and other content in the side panel, while
changing the images in the center.
► Click Sidecar icon in block palette
► Upload an image to center panel
► Add narrative text in the scrolling side panel.
► Open the panel at bottom to add and
rearrange frames.
► Add a Youtube video in the side panel. More.
► More curated images: yowzer5 at Flickr.

👉 Remember this ArcGIS Online tab view -- you often need to return to it
Add a Map
► ArcGIS displays at top left. Click on the Content tab
►Note these tabs: My Content - My Favorites - My Groups - Living Atlas
►To create a map, we first need a basemap. These are available in the Living Atlas.
►Select the Living Atlas tab.
Search Living Atlas to find a map
Select a basemap
► Search for “World Topographic
Map”
► Select Esri topo map
► Click star to add to My Favorites
► When the map opens, use "Find
address or place” top right. Search
for "Montreal" and select in from
the dropdown.
► Map repositions itself. Zoom in or
reposition if desired.
► Basemap is done.
► Next, we will add feature layers,
which overlay on the basemap.
Find feature layers in ArcGIS Online
 With map open in the center window, select
Add Layers icon at the top
 Select Search for layers in menu
👉 Another menu appears. We want to search
in ArcGIS Online. Make sure it is selected before
searching.

Insert Map into Storymap
► Open Storymap palette. Select Map icon
to insert.
► Look in My Favorites for your Montreal
map
► Click on map to select. It opens in editing
mode.
► Use pen tool to modify map. Make some
small changes to see their effects.
► When done, select ”Place map”.
► To do edits in ArcGIS online, choose
option when prompted; OR open map in
My Favorites; OR select from list in your
Contents tab.
Add Slideshow
 Slideshow progresses sideways using clicks, rather than scrolling.
 Add frames, content, and rearrange a slideshow in a similar fashion to the
sidecar - by opening and using the Expand function at bottom left.
 Slideshow tool is adjacent to the Sidecar in the palette. First we will click
on Sideshow to insert, then we will insert the map we created.
Insert map in Slideshow
 Choose Add map.
 After your Montreal map is
inserted, expand bottom pane.
 Click on ellipses ... and choose
Duplicate a few times to add
more slides.
 The map has been duplicated in
the additional slides.
Use Duplicated Slide
 Advance to slide 2.
 Toggle off all layers. Toggle on
Major Parks in Montreal.
 Place map to save. Add title
and text to describe slide.
 Advance to your duplicate in
slide 3.
 Toggle on Cycling Network
Montreal layer, toggle off
others.
 Place map to save. Add title
and text to describe slide.
 Add one or two more frames.
Rearrange, Reuse
 Duplicating the same map in successive slides allows you to focus on
different aspects, pan and zoom, turn on and off layers.
 Unlike Express maps, a Map in ArcGIS Online can be duplicated within a
storymap frame, accessed outside the storymap, reused, and printed.
Preview, Publish, Print
► Select Preview in top toolbar to review
mobile, tablet, and desktop versions.
► Select Publish to generate shareable URL,
with links for Twitter and Facebook.
Stories can be unpublished to remove
public access.
► Published storymaps can be run in kiosk
mode.
► Select … menu (More Actions) to
Unpublish, Duplicate (make a copy/rename
your StoryMap) and Print, as well as Delete
the storymap.
